Very Good

Tranquil isolated relaxing and very comfortable. Lovely warm homely atmosphere and very good food in generous supply. Interesting location and good local knowledge but not enough time to do everything. Very relaxing massge Great vege garden and birds

“Breath-taking, Pristine, Private, Luxury”

Set away from the rest of the lodge the Ferry Man's Cottage is a quiet and breath taking place. It's a little house with beautiful showers, a new kitchen, a backyard with ducks and a pond, and of course a view to die for. It also has a pair of old-timey bathtubs where you can lie back with a glass of wine at night and watch the nearly infinite number of stars overhead. Do ask for allison to cook you a meal. Her cooking is superb and better than anything you'll find in town.

“Wonderful, relaxing one night stay; wished it had been longer”

Reviewed 29 Dec 2010

We had booked Ferry Mans Cottage for a special getaway during a quick scoot on the South Island away from the kids. We had hoped from the what we'd seen on the website that it would be a break to remember... it was. A lovely cottage in a truly stunning location. Our baths under the stars, listening to morepork owls and kiwis with the burning brazier next to us is a memory that will stay with us for a long time. Dinner in Birds Ferry Lodge was also really very good, with accomplished hosting by andre. We wished we had been able to stay for longer and hope we can get back, perhaps with the kids next time.

“An amazingly beautiful piece of paradise”

Reviewed 2 Dec 2010

We both love the outdoors, the wonderful birdlife and the serene beauty of the coast, and we found all of that and more at Ferrymans Cottage. The peace and quite we needed after our wonderful wedding we found in abundance during our stay, the surroundings and the wonderful accomadation allowing us time and means to reflect on the most wonderful day of our lives. Our hosts were wonderful and could not do more for us. Thankyou for making our stay fantastic, enhancing a wonderful honeymoon.

Response from the owner WE are delighted that you enjoyed your stay - we look forward to welcoming you both back some day soon! From a hot and sunny Birds Ferry Lodge Alison & Andre.

“Romantic and private weekend retreat”

This is a beautifully maintained cottage offering utter privacy and special touches that make a romantic weekend getaway complete. The seclusion and peaceful surroundings really allow time to relax, unwind & recharge your batteries. The food offered is absolutely devine.

“very disappointing”

Reviewed 30 Sep 2010

Stayed for 3 nights when the big storm hit the West Coast. The accommodation was described as "Lxurious Punakaiki accommodation"... it is way closer to Wesport than Punakaiki and for the price the cabin is not luxurious. We were very disappointed

Response from the owner Thank you for taking time to place a review of your stay with us. We are very disappointed that you were not delighted with your stay. The storm which resulted in a short power outage on your fist evening was unfortunate but beyond our control as I am sure you appreciate. We were very prompt to come to your aid when this happened with water, torches, candles and offer of driving to Westport to collect hot food for you should it be required. Regarding the description of our location: So that we can put this right can you please tell us where you saw the line ‘luxurious Punakaiki accommodation’. As we are midway between Westport and Punakaiki we market to both locations, both of which are within short driving distance to Birds Ferry Lodge and guests enjoy the benefits of both. We don’t wish to mislead our guests and usually state “Close or near to Punakaiki” since that is where we are! Readers should note that we have gone to great efforts to ensure the cottage is comfortable and luxurious including features not often found in holiday homes in the area: generous gourmet breakfast hamper which includes homemade bread and free range eggs, dinners provided, quality wine selection for guests convenience, well equipped kitchen and laundry, dishwasher, under floor heating, fresh flowers,WIFI in a rural location, handmade shortbread, fluffy robes, 12acres of private gardens for your own use, etc! We offer a variety of multinight packages which include massages, dinners and bed and breakfast in Ferry Mans Cottage which are great value for money. Full details are on our website. We would be pleased to hear any suggestions on how we could get closer to your expectations of ‘luxurious’ so would welcome any feedback you can help us with on this!

“The Perfect escape in a stunning, special location”

Reviewed 9 Sep 2010

We arrived to find a stunning location, breathtaking views, a beautifully and tastefully presented cottage with impecible attention to detail. My friend was visiting the coast to work and I went along for the ride. She found Ferry Mans Cottage the ideal place to concentrate but also to relax at the end of the day. We loved the wonderful fresh produce left at the cottage (the smell of freshly baked bread as we opened the door was intoxicating) and found every convenience was available to us. Bedrooms were spacious and confortable, bathroom was beautifully appointed and the kitchen had every gaget we needed. The surrounding grounds complete with pond and the view across the valley meant that we felt we were able to get right away for everything and just chill out. We didn't want to leave! I will be back with other friends and I know she wants to bring her family down.

“West Coast Dreaming”

Reviewed 26 Aug 2010

This is an idilic spot and one could easily spend a week or two in the area exploring the dozens of interesting places within an hours drive. The hosts were excellent as was the service and the food, particularly the evening meal provided by alison. We both enjoyed a great massage from andre which was timed just right for us at a rather stressful time. We were impressed with the flexibility they both allowed us with regard to the services and and the information provided by andre about things to do and places to go not only locally but on the rest of our trip down the Coast. All in all a great experience.

“Batteries now fully recharged - rested and revived”

Reviewed 2 Aug 2010

We had a very relaxing 2 night stay in the Cottage during winter time and enjoyed being cossetted in a very warm cosy environment looking out over the wild and wonderful West Coast scenery. Alison and andre have thought of all those little extras which makes your stay extremely comfortable and very memorable.
