Description from owner

Description

This large property, in the centre of the original small walled town, retaining many original features, is entered through the 12ft oak doors facing onto the historical Place du Marche. It is divided into two houses connected by a central corridor. The Front House is not rented out and is kept locked when we are not in residence.

The renovated 4 bedroom, 3 bathrooms, Garden House (pictured above), with all rooms overlooking the secluded, quiet, walled garden is the house offered for holiday rentals. This is entered from the wisteria- shaded, open air, central courtyard with outdoor furniture and Webber BBQ.

Although our house sleeps 10 we only accept a maximum of 6 +baby.

The house is suitable for families, child and toddler friendly, with the the owners baby/children equipment available if required. (free of charge). The garden is completely enclosed and a great place to relax with your children, or pets (which are allowed on request.) There is a large patio with seating for 8 and a built in splash pool. Cycling is very popular in the Loire and there are many Off Road cycle tracks, including the newly built route from Richelieu to Chinon.

Bikes can be hired locally. If taking your own our courtyard has a large secure covered area.

There is no need to drive anywhere!

All the facilities of a small town are just a short walk. No problems with parking either! This is free outside the house and all around the Square. Bring the grandparents too they will love it.

The 1000 acre Park, just two minutes walk, has outdoor swimming pool and children's paddling play area(summer only), tennis, play areas, mini zoo and it is great for walking and cycling. There are many exciting things to do and visit for day trips. Futuroscope, Puy du Fou, leisure parks with water-sports, lake-beaches and golf courses are all within a short drive. Many of the famous Chateaux and Historical towns of Chinon, Saumur, Tours and Poitiers are also just a short drive from Richelieu (itself a famous historical town) and these outings can be combined with tours of local vineyards including the Champagne(method). There are weekly local markets, fetes and outdoor activities in the area and full details of these can be found on the Richelieu town website or in the tourist office adjacent to our house.

Free WIFI is also available for those who need to keep in touch with work or home! Please feel free to email or phone for answers to any queries or request further details. Short stays may be possible out of high season.

Getting around

A car is essential for this area. There is a bus service but infrequent. There is also a local taxi service but this is expensive. There is good hire car available at airports and train stations which our family and friends have used and can recommend. Once in town all amenities are walking distance and a car is only required for exploring the surrounding area.

Interaction with guest

My French Manager and Cleaner lives in Richelieu and manages my property. They welcome you with keys, at the agreed check in time, and are available to answer any questions. If a convenient check in time cannot be agreed due to time of arrival you will be given a key code to a box on the front door so that you can access the house. They also take care of my maintenance so if any 'breakdowns' they can be contacted to deal with any problem. There are two house books. One gives details of appliances/ rubbish collections etc. The other has full information of local interests. Our house is also adjacent to the Tourist Office.

“Perfect for young children”

Reviewed 1 Aug 2013

We hired this house for our family holiday with our two children five and one. I was looking for a good value holiday so was planning on camping but the thought of taking the sterilizer and baby gear I decided to investigate the cost of hiring a house and stumbled across this house. I contacted the owner about suitability of taking my now walking baby, she was great and explained what was there and what to take (like my 5 year old's bike). The house is homely and well equipped, it has a wooden cot in one of the bedrooms and I borrowed their stairgates and highchair (the house does have a lot of hard floors and steps but no different to our wooden floors at home) and best of all it has Cbeebies on digital tv and a DVD player! Richelieu is a small quiet town and the house is in the main square. We walked to the bakery each morning across the square. Took the bike to the park two minute walk where there are paths to cycle along, big open spaces to play in and a small lovely playground. A bit further along is the public swimming pool about 2 euros per person, men need speedo's! friendly even when our French speaking is lacking. In the evening went for drinks in the square and often ate in the restaurant in town all very child friendly. The tourist office is a few houses down they were helpful in suggesting places to visit and if you buy your ticket through them you can get a discount to some of the attractions. Our favourite parts were using the park, walking around the market in Richelieu bought some large garlic and some antiques! Going to Chateau du Rivau a short drive away but for the children a magical garden to explore and the zoo best one I have been to. All the family had a holiday to remember and already looking to book for next year!.

““Lovely House Beautiful Location””

Reviewed 25 Jul 2013

We stayed in this house in July 2013, in a group of four adults, two teenagers and a dog. House was lovely and spacious, well equipped kitchen, good sized bedrooms with comfortable beds. The garden was perfect for the dog, fully enclosed and safe although did get very hot in the afternoon (as we were lucky enough to have fabulous weather). The courtyard at the front was ideal to cool down and was a perfect place to leave the dog if we went out without him, with its cool shaded area. The paddling pool was very handy in the hot weather, and the town is perfectly situated for access to Chinon and Saumur. Theres a very handy little Carrefour just round the corner and lovely places to eat and drink in the town. The nearby park is lovely for walking and cycling and there is an outdoor pool minutes away. We have stayed in a few houses in the Loire Valley over the years and would thoroughly recommend this property.

Response from the owner I'm so glad you all enjoyed your stay despite the weather which, for the last two weeks, has been the wettest June we've ever experienced here. Local farmers and vintners very concerned for their crops. However, we also still love the atmosphere and peace in Richelieu-the weather hasn't spoilt that. Especially glad we are in a large house and not confined to a hotel room. We had plans to go to La Rochelle for few days but cancelled that idea and stayed here!
