Description

Kirkennan Woodsedge forms part of the converted stable block on Kirkennan Estate. It sleeps up to 5 people in 1 double and 1 twin and 1 single room. It has a living room with open fire (initial fuel included), a kitchen, and an enclosed rear garden with a lawn and sitting out area (outside furniture provided). To the front it looks out over grass and fields. The property is all on one level and has an accessible shower room and an adjustable height Adjustamatic bed.

Woodsedge is located on the beautiful and peaceful Kirkennan Estate bordered by the tidal Urr Water, in the holiday destination of Dumfries and Galloway, South West Scotland. The cottage provides comfortable accommodation within 35 acres of formal lawns, oak wood and walled garden which guests are welcome to enjoy. Paved private roads extend through the formal gardens of the Estate that are suitable and safe for wheelchairs, pushchairs and young bike riders. We welcome well behaved dogs (which can be let off the lead in the 16 acre Jock's Wood).

Kirkennan is conveniently located for beaches, coastal, hill and woodland walks, historic sites, cycling (including 7-Stanes mountain bike trails), wildlife, gardens and other attractions.

The gardens at Kirkennan are managed organically. Woodsedge hot water and heating is provided by a district heating system biomass boiler that runs on locally felled wood and meets renewable heat incentive requirements.

We welcome holiday makers that wish to travel without a car and can give further advise on request.

Cot and high chair available on request. Manual wheelchair can be hired from local Day Centre - details on request.

Response from the owner Dear Colette, It sounds like you found Woodsedge to be just what we claim it to be – a comfortable cottage in lovely surroundings in an ideal location to explore Dumfries & Galloway with the great asset of having our own riverside woodland (now with the new photography hide which I am so glad you enjoyed). Woodsedge is 3* graded by Visit Scotland – who reconfirmed this with a visit just before your stay. Whilst we do have plans to upgrade the interior this will take time as the work has to fit between bookings - Woodsedge is almost fully booked until October with a number of repeat visitors. I am sorry and somewhat surprised that the occasional hum of the biomass boiler was such an issue for you – you are the first person ever to mention this; after your comment about this in the visitor book the next guests reported that it hadn’t bothered them at all. Many of our guests come to us specifically because they care about green issues and are looking for holiday accommodation that tries to be as sustainable as possible (we are Bronze rated by Green Tourism and are working towards Silver) and a number of guests ask for tours of the biomass boiler which burns wood rejected from the local sawmill providing heating and hot water for the whole stable block and the house; Michael is always happy to oblige. If you are a potential guest concerned that this occasional hum might bother you then I would suggest looking at Kirkennan Lodge which is at the other end of the Estate and too far from the biomass boiler to be serviced by it. The Lodge is currently heated by oil – though I am starting to look into a greener alternative here also. With best wishes, Jenny

“Relaxation & Comfort”

We booked our stay in Woodsedge Cottage at very short notice. Everything was provided for our comfort. The cottage was toasty warm. The silence was therapeutic. The enclosed garden for our small dogs was much appreciated. Our hosts were available, if required, and we enjoyed some lovely chats. Bliss. Would we return? Yes. Would we recommend to others? We already have.

“Lovely cottage which exceeded our expectations”

Our three night stay was very comfortable in this homely cottage. It was very well equipped and we enjoyed the open fire. Excellent layout and the room sizes were ideal and the beds were very comfortable. The grounds are beautiful and peaceful and ideal for younger children. The surrounding area has something for everybody including great beaches, mountain biking, bird watching and hill walking. Pubs and places to eat are very accessible. We hope to return and we would recommend it to anybody.
