Description
Booking for 2023 now OPEN The Deck is available from 24th March to 31st October. Come and visit and you will be able to wake up to the sounds of birds and, on a nice day, breakfast on the spacious south facing Deck at Rough Pastures. (some 35 different bird varieties have been seen as well as deer and other wild life). The Deck is a self-contained apartment set in a rural idyll. The property overlooks the Wye Valley and is close to the Forest of Dean, the land of Myths and Legends. The house is set in 5 acres of woodland and garden with fantastic walks, cycle rides, bird watching, and views. Our Bluebell woods are fantastic in spring.
Located on the Historic Welsh border, The Deck is a part of the main house which is built around a several hundred years old cottage, standing on the site of the battle of Craig-Y-Dorth (Circa 1404). The area is designated “of Outstanding Natural Beauty”. We are in easy reach of a number of Castles and Ruins including Raglan and Chepstow Castles as well as the famous Tintern Abbey. The county town of Monmouth (3 miles) is an ancient market town steeped in history. A little further afield there are numerous historic towns and villages to visit. The Celtic Manor Resort and Spa with world class golfing facilities is within 25 minutes’ drive – with other excellent golf courses and Spa facilities available in nearer proximities. Superb eating out facilities for all budgets and tastes abound in the area.
Access is independent of the main house via its own gravel drive and external stairs leading to the large south facing deck/ veranda and thence into a spacious, open plan living room, equipped with Sky TV and wi-fi. The fully equipped kitchen has a fridge-freezer, dishwasher, 4 hob electric hob, oven, grill and microwave. There is a gas barbeque available for guests’ use on the Deck. In summer the south facing deck acts as an extended living room, presenting a perfect ring-side lounging area to watch and listen to the wildlife forsging, or finding their night time roost at the end of the day. The double bedroom has a modern en-suite bathroom with shower. The apartment is ideal for two people and a sofa bed in the living room is comfortable for one or two young children or a young person. The grounds are frequented by diverse wildlife including wild deer, many species of birds, rabbits, red kites and buzzards and we were recently visited by a Peregrine Falcon. Forest walks and cycle trails are plentiful in the surrounding countryside and the views are a wonderful antidote to today’s frantic workaday world. (Access to washing and drying facilities is available in the main house by arrangement)

The Deck is well appointed, spotlessly clean, cosy & comfortable & in a quiet rural spot with good views over woodland - plenty of birds & other wildlife to watch. Carole is an excellent host being friendly & helpful, but she doesn't intrude & left milk, fresh bread, eggs, milk & flowers for us on arrival.

“Break away”
Lovely sitting on the deck watching birds, ducks, chickens and squirrels. Bed was very comfortable. Little extras were nice, yea, coffee , biscuits. Just the peace and quite I needed recouping after my operation.

“A quiet, relaxing little gem in beautiful countryside”
The apartment is located in stunning countryside with extensive walks from the doorstep. If you walk quietly in the garden you will see deer and other wildlife and there are fantastic views from the front. The apartment is clean and well equipped and the perfect place to get away from it all yet within easy reach of restaurants and pubs for an evening meal. A great find!
