Description from owner

Description

Finca Anjala is a 9 hectare bamboo sanctuary and eco-friendly, farm. It is located in southwest Costa Rica, a 4 hour drive from San Josè, and 1.5 hours from the nearest beach, Dominical. Covered by WALKING TRAILS with access to WATERFALLS and Pejibaye River. Property designed with permaculture, native plants and ORGANIC FARMING practices. House constructed using only local sustainable and up-cycled materials, mostly BAMBOO. Property utilizes SOLAR POWER and harvested local water.

Remote rural location, 6 hectares being secondary forest with approx. 3 kms. of trails for your private enjoyment. You can also enjoy a view of the mountains. Next to the house is a pond with a water feature and ducks. The property contains three houses. Two bamboo houses and the farmhand's house. The property contains a variety of farm animals, including hens, and occasionally you can spot butterflies, birds, insects, sloths and other wildlife. Its design is based on permaculture principles. Visitors can take advantage of fruits and vegetables being grown on the property, including fruit trees, bananas, plantains, root crops, herbs and garden vegetables, when in season.

The house has 2 bedrooms, each with a queen bed, bunkbeds, hammock and 2 balconies. It has 2 full bathrooms with hot shower. It has a fully-equipped kitchen, terrace, a dining table that seats 8, and lots of outdoor furniture for lounging. For a small fee, clothes can be washed and dried upon request.

Please be aware that the tap water is not suitable for drinking but can be used for washing. However we supply drinking water (Nikken water filter) and suggest you bring a refillable water bottle.

Guests have full access to the farm, pond, trails, 6 hectare forest, waterfalls, river and landscaped areas around the houses.

Either I or my caretaker Digna will be available to assist you during your stay. She speaks limited English but I am always available by phone. The only sounds you will hear are those of nature and farm workers.

The neighborhood is a close knit rural community. You can choose to interact with the community by participating in activities undertaken by the community. We can coordinate with guests, upon request. Otherwise the property is situated on a private piece of land, and you will likely not interact with anybody aside from my caretaker and farmhand.

There is a pulperia (very small convenience store) just 1 km. from the farm.

The farm is certified under Pago por Servicios Ambientales, FONAFIFO, an initiative that pays farm owners, such as myself, for protecting forest. The property is located in Bajo Bonitas, Platanares, Pèrez Zeledòn, a rural community where knowledge of the Spanish language is necessary to get around. My caretaker speaks limited English and I am not always on the property, but you can always reach me by phone. We can assist you in finding local activities and services that will make your stay unforgettable. We can arrange activities upon request, based upon availability, including horseback riding, diary processing and cheese making, oxcart ride, coffee harvesting, sugar cane processing, tortilla making lessons, orchid garden and more. You can e-mail us in advance if you would like to arrange any activities.

We have WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS.

Regarding food, we can serve MEALS for an extra fee. If you want to cook meals yourself, you must shop for groceries prior to your arrival. There is a small store nearby, that sells some basic necessities, but is not a full supermarket. We stock the kitchen with stove, refrigerator, cooking utensils, drinking water.Regarding food, we can serve meals for an extra fee. Things to bring: insect repellent, sunscreen, flashlight or headlamp, hiking shoes, food, refillable water bottle, rain jacket. Nights are chilly.

ORGANIC AGRICULTURE

The farm is on the transition process to being certified this 2019 as an ORGANIC FARM. There are fruit trees, banana and plantain plantations, medicinal herb garden, root crops, vegetables.

Lombricomposting is an important activity. Banana peels, cardboard and goat manure are the principal input for the worms.

Biochar is made from fallen forest wood and used for composting.

Composting is done mainly with materials found at the farm: manure, leaves, biochar, mountain microorganisms. We try to use as much available material at the farm for the different processes involved.

We have a greenhouse for our vegetable crops and harvested water is used on all plants.

Interaction with guest

I am often at the farm, but have no exact dates. I am always available by phone. The farmhand lives with his wife and two children, 6 and 7 years of age. They are available during the whole of your stay, and love having guests around. For an extra fee, she can help with household chores if you would like. “Ein Ort für Ruhe und Entdeckungen, weit weg vom Massentourismus”

Reviewed 1 Nov 2016

Die Finca liegt mitten in grünen Hügeln – wir sind vom Massentourismus der Pazifikküste dorthin geflohen, um uns ein bisschen auszuruhen. Der Weg von der Küste dauert gut 2,5… More
