Description

The house sleeps four people. Ann Cleeves stayed here whilst doing research before writing the books the acclaimed drama series "Shetland" are based on.

16 Mounthooly Street is in the historic lanes area of the capital (Lerwick), a quiet location with no passing traffic noise. Free parking is at the rear of the house in Rechabite Place car park. The Tourist Centre is at the bottom of the street where you can book boat trips or coach trips to all areas. Lerwick’s two supermarkets are not far from the house.

It is around 100 yards from the town centre, where you can browse through the shops, pass the time looking at the vessels in our beautiful harbour or take time out to relax in the restaurants and bars.

Live traditional music can be heard in the Lounge Bar near the bottom of Mounthooly Street after 9pm every Wednesday evening.

Getting around

If you want to see the best of Shetland, you’ll need a car. There are high quality roads in Shetland and regular inter-island ferries to the isles of Bressay, Whalsay, Yell, Unst and Fetlar. If you need to hire a car, the local firms are: Bolts Car Hire and Star Rent-a-Car Information on Taxi operators and timetables for ferries, buses and inter-island flights are available on the ZETTRANS website. There are many boat tour operators as you get a spectacular view of the scenery and wildlife from the water.

“A stay in Lerwick”

We had a lovely week based in Lerwick in this cosy, comfortable and well equipped property. It was a good base to explore the island and a short distance from the centre of town but quiet. The arrival arrangements worked well and Margaret was very helpful in answering any queries. The home made shortbread on arrival was very welcome!

“great base for touring the islands”

The cottage was right in Lerwick very close to the harbour. The accommodation was great -clean and welcoming. There was plenty of information about the area. The small drawback was the steep road up to the cottage. Margaret had a cancelation on the day we were leaving and very kindly allowed us to stay until the ferry was due.

“Superb accommodation in a lovely part of town”

We thoroughly enjoyed using this lovely house for our week long stay in the Shetlands. It was the perfect location for walks, visiting the sea and very quiet at night. The owner really thought of everything, from the clear signing on how things worked, to all mod cons. The living area was large and spacey and the kitchen superbly equipped. Highly recommended.
