Description from owner

Description

The Drill Hall Cottage is a hundred year old stone built cottage, and was formerly the residence of the local Territorial Army commander in Evie. The cottage has been completely renovated, retaining original features such as fireplaces, cornice, wood panelling, and high ceilings. It is situated in the beautiful Evie countryside and is surrounded by lush farmland. Drill Hall Cottage has a lovely view of Eynhallow sound, and is just a short walk from Aikerness beach. In the summer, you can hear Red Throated Divers calling as they pass overhead between the sea and the hill loch where they nest. Enclosed south-facing garden with lawn and sun area. The house also boasts a library of historical and contemporary Orkney books, including novels, poetry, folklore, saga and history.

“Nice well-equipped cottage, no internet and messy neighbours”

Reviewed 28 Aug 2020

The cottage is perfectly well equipped and very comfortable, including comfortable beds, good heating, good kitchen. It does have a sea view (far away) but the view out the front windows is on a house… More

Response from the owner Thank you for your review. We are glad you were pleased with our cottage. Internet was installed last year, once Covid restrictions allowed engineers to visit. Regarding the neighbouring property, we don’t feel that this is a fair complaint; it is someone else’s property and beyond our control.

“Stay on the Orkneys”

Reviewed 23 Jun 2019

The cottage was warm and comfortable which was lovely as during our stay we experienced torrential rain, cold winds with windows of sunshine surprisingly popping up every now and again. The kitchen was well set up and very workable, the dining room a very good size, the lounge was cosy with the opportunity for a real fire if you wanted. We were always warm so did not feel the need. The bathroom was good - plenty of hot water. The shower cubicle was huge but the basin was a bit on the tiny side though! The two bedrooms were good with comfy beds and each had good blackout blinds which were very necessary as it was still light at midnight. We had beautiful views of the sea and islands from the kitchen, dining room and lounge; the field next to us was filled with cows with their calves, sheep with their lambs. There was extensive bird life in the area. Parking was easy in the drive next to the cottage. The village had a small, well-stocked shop which we used a couple of times. A mile walk or drive down to the Sandy beach provided good dog walks. Evie itself is a little off the beaten track but the island is easy to drive around and we visited most of the Neolithic sites. The Broch of Gurness is a mile away and well worth a visit. More overlooked are the farm museums which we thoroughly enjoyed. The people on the islands were very friendly, we enjoyed our stay but if you go do take a lot of rain proofs and warm clothes it is wetter and colder in the Orkneys than you might think!
