Description

Oriel Cottage is a pretty pink 18th-century fisherman's cottage in the middle of Aldeburgh High Street with direct access to the beach through a tunnel behind the cottage.

It is beautifully furnished with a wood-burner in the welcoming sitting room where the dining table can seat 8 people.

The sitting room has two large sofas and a pouffe. There is BT wifi, a TV with Freeview channels, a NOW TV stick and a DVD player. There is a large selection of books, DVDs and games as well for your use during your stay.

The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering for 6 with a free-standing hob and oven, two fridges with a small freezer, a microwave, a kettle and toaster and all the utensils you should need, as well as a washing machine.

There is a downstairs shower room with a basin and toilet.

Two bedrooms upstairs; the front one with a king bed and views over the High Street. There is a chair and a large mirror as well as a wardrobe with shelves and hanging rail with wooden hangers.

The second bedroom has a double bed, but can also be made up as twin beds if you prefer. There are two bedside tables with lamps, a large wardrobe with a mirror and light.

The light and airy bathroom has a large roll-top bath, a basin, a toilet, a heated towel rail and a light-up mirror.

The third bedroom with twin beds is in the lovely attic room (the attic stairs are quite steep and narrow).

There is a litttle yard at the back with a table and a couple of seats, which leads you to the beach. It is a lovely sun-trap in the mornings and the front of the cottage catches the sun in the evenings.

Beds will be made up for you with 200-thread count egyptian cotton linen and good quality towels will be provided too.

“Amazing location and a great owner”

Reviewed 29 Oct 2021

We spent a long weekend at the cottage recently (4 adults, 1 dog and a 9 month old baby) and found it perfect for us. The location was perfect and Amanda was brilliant with recommendations for local places to go out and eat - she even left us a cake and fizz as we were celebrating my 30th birthday. None of us had been to Aldeburgh before but we would definitely return. The only thing I would say is that if visiting in the summer the courtyard area is quite small for those wanting to eat/drink outside. However, the beach is such a short distance away that I’m sure you could use that instead.

Oriel cottage was perfect for a family getaway... Very comfortable and right on the sea as well as tucked in to thr middle of Aldeburgh which is a really lovely town with great shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. And Thorpeness is only a walk away along the seafront so you hardly need to use a car... We only did for rhhe nearby Rspb minsmere which was glorious. Highly recommend!

“Very cosy. Lovely little cottage”

Reviewed 9 Sep 2020

We had a lovely stay at Oriel Cottage. So comfortable and cosy. Has everything you need and perfect location on the high street. We were however very shocked to see Oriel Cottage advertised for £151 per night after we paid £285 per night when we booked, being two people, two dogs. We don’t mind paying for good quality accommodation though in this case we did feel a bit ‘ripped off’. Otherwise it was a lovely stay.

Response from the owner Thank you for your review. I am so glad that you enjoyed your stay. I am sorry about the price difference. Holiday cottages do tend to have more popular weeks and prices alter according to supply and demand. This year prices have been more subject to change than usual and we have had huge demand for Oriel Cottage with a waiting list for the week of your booking. With best wishes, Amanda

“Perfect location”

Reviewed 9 Aug 2020

We love Aldeburgh and were looking forward to returning after a few years break. We were anxious that the cottage, being situated centrally on the high street, would be noisy but in fact this was not the case... it was perfect! We were able to pop out and grab yummy bits (Fish shop) and fantastic coffees (Magpie our fave) whilst keeping a close eye on the Ives ice cream queue (they are truly delish even vegan options!) ! Being a stone throw to the beach meant a dash in the cosi and quick swim was divine! Amanda the owner was lovely and very helpful with her advice and Tanya the housekeeper was wonderful and so kind to pop in mid stay to have a tidy! We would highly recommend the restaurant take out services and the munchies meals, for those wishing to make holiday eating simple! We opted to pay for day parking in the car park at the back of the house as the builders took up much of the available free parking. The upstairs room at the top of the house well suited my son but was a wiggle for anyone adult sized! The family were all very sad to say farewell to our Lovely perfectly situated home but cheered at the promise to hopefully return soon!

Response from the owner Thank you for reviewing Oriel Cottage. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. We are sorry that you were not able to benefit from the new carpets which have now been fitted but sadly, the fitters were not able to come in over the Christmas period in time for your visit. We have not been asked about having two showers in our cottage before as most of our guests like the choice of the big rolltop bath in the main bathroom upstairs or the shower which is downstairs and handy when coming in from the beach. Our listing does state that the stairs to the attic bedroom are "better if you are agile" as the cottage dates back to the18th-century and so has some quirky features. The neighbours' builders have been quiet and tidy but they were away over the Christmas period and the rain may well have washed some dust into the passage-way behind the cottage that leads to the beach. I am sorry about this and have mentioned this to the neighbours to avoid this happening.
