Description from owner

Description

Orchard Cottage is a delightful retreat in the grounds of historic West Stow Hall. Tucked away in a very private location with beautiful views over fruit trees and paddocks, it is the perfect place for a peaceful holiday and an ideal base from which to explore Suffolk...if you can bear to leave!

Newly renovated in a sympathetic manner with traditional Suffolk flooring, exposed beams and distempered, the cottage has everything that makes a comfortable holiday home. The open plan kitchen / living area is fully equipped so Christmas dinner should be no problem! With its full length double doors it is cool on the hottest day whilst there is oil fired central heating for the depths of winter.

Both bedrooms are light and airy and have their own en-suite shower rooms with powerful showers and plenty of built in storage space.

We hope guests find the cottage as pretty and relaxing as we do. It is lovely sitting on the terrace listening to nothing but bird song or studying the stars with only the call of the owls to break the silence. Though there is wifi and freesat TV the modern world can seem a million miles away.

Larger groups could also be easily accommodated by booking Gardener's Cottage, which sleeps 6, as well.

Dogs are welcome but please note that as we are surrounded by fields occupied by mares and foals they must remain on leads at all times when in the grounds and that there is an extra £25 cleaning fee payable in cash when here for pets. Please let us know if you would like to bring your pet as we have a dog and would like to avoid any difficulties.

Given the present circumstances I would like to assure guests that the cottage is being cleaned and sanitised to the highest standard and in accordance with government guidelines. When the weather has permitted, the windows have been left open for a minimum of three hours to allow maximum ventilation. Unfortunately we have had to remove some cushions, throws and books which are not easily cleaned. Guests are very welcome to bring their own!

To avoid cross contamination we need to ask that, at the end of their stay, guests strip their beds and put all dirty linen and towels in the black bin bags provided. It would also be helpful if all windows could be opened and the key left on the table.

Guests are of course very welcome to bring their own bedding and towels. Just let me know in advance so I can provide some wine and chocolates in lieu!

Getting around

Bury St. Edmunds, a lovely, historic town, which is well worth a visit is only a 15 mins drive whilst Cambridge, Newmarket and Lavenham are 30 mins away. All are accessible by public transport. There is a frequent train service and good bus service from Bury. We are ideally suited for visiting many NT properties including Ickworth, Long Melford and Anglesey Abbey. The heritage coast including Aldeburgh, Southwold and Holkham make very enjoyable days out.

Interaction with guest

Andy and I own and live in the Hall so we are usually around if anything needs sorting or to offer advice but equally unless you need us we might only wave to each other when coming home or going out! Normally we would welcome guests but in the present circumstances we ask that guests let us know by phone/ WhatsApp etc that they have arrived. The cottage will be open with the key on the table so guests can settle in whenever they get here. If there is an issue we will still be on hand to sort things out.

“Pet friendly cottage”

Reviewed 8 Nov 2021

Lovely little cottage within the grounds of he hall. Well equipped kitchen and nice outside seating area. We went to try and avoid fireworks weekend but there was a lot of fireworks around there so don’t go to avoid fireworks. Good distance to forest walks

“Just perfect”

Reviewed 29 Sep 2020

A truly beautiful cottage in an amazing setting in the orchard, we had breakfast every morning on the patio watching the horses in the paddocks. One evening we saw a dear, there were also lots of small birds around to watch. The owner even showed us around the Hall, a beautiful old building. A truly wonderful holiday.
