Description
The emerald island of Rhodes is known worldwide for its Medieval City built by the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. It is a unique archaeological site, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. The archaeological and cultural heritage of the medieval city it is not only breathtaking. It is endless.
The Medieval Villa at Ipparchou street is a hidden gem and a perfect example of the architecture of the knights. It was built in 1431 within the inner private walls of the Medieval City, where the palace's high officers lived, just 40 meters away from the Palace of the Grand Master. The symbols and crests still found inside the Medieval Villa and the historical references noted in archelogical records prove its magnificent journey in time.
Despite the great earthquakes and disastrous wars that swept the island in the centuries, the Medieval Villa remained unharmed both aesthetically and structurally. The Central Archaeological Council of Greece characterised the property as an 'exemplary house of unaltered medieval architecture' and classified it as category one (K1), the highest category of archaeological importance. Only 5 properties are in this category across the medieval city.
The Medieval Villa, during this turbulent times, remained unattached. During the Turkish rule the villa went through the hands of four different Ottoman families. In 1992 Dimitrios Raptis family bought the villa to restore it with respect and care and to highlight the inexhaustible aesthetics and harmony of the architecture of the knights.
Finaly, the company Regnum Leones, owned by the sons of Dimitrios Raptis, converted the villa into a luxurious property where guests experience a unique historical stay on the island of the Knights.
