Additional Location Information
The apartment looks over Greyfriars Church (built in 1620) and churchyard to the spires and roofs of the Old Town. There are many tales attached to Greyfriars, perhaps the most famous of which is that of Greyfriars Bobby, a faithful Skye terrier. So devoted was the dog to his master John Gray that when Gray died and was buried in Greyfriars Churchyard, Bobby kept guard over the grave for fourteen years until his own death in 1872. The dog is buried close to his master and his faithfulness is commemorated in a statue opposite the entrance to the churchyard at the junction of George IV Bridge and Candlemaker Row.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the churchyard was a haunt of the ‘Resurrection Men’: body-snatchers who would dig up fresh corpses to sell for dissection to anatomists at the nearby medical school. You can find out more about Edinburgh’s grisly past on the guided tours that leave from the Royal Mile (see, for example, Mercat Tours, Witchery Tours and Mary King’s Close). The church is an atmospheric concert venue and there are regular recitals and concerts throughout the year, including during the Edinburgh Festival.
Across the road from Greyfriars Bobby are the National Museum of Scotland, an award-winning modern building that holds the national collections, and the adjoining Royal Scottish Museum, an impressive Victorian building that houses international collections of decorative arts, science, industry, archaeology and the natural world. The Tower Restaurant on the top floor of the Museum of Scotland has terraces with spectacular views over the city.
The apartment is close to the main campus of the University of Edinburgh (established in 1582) and its landmark buildings Old College (the Faculty of Law), the Medical School and the McEwan Hall. Beyond the University lie the Meadows, a large area of open parkland. The Meadows were originally under water: the Burgh Loch, which was drained in 1740, was one of Edinburgh’s main water supplies. The area is now one of the city’s biggest green spaces, ideal for jogging. There are public tennis courts, a children’s playpark and Bruntsfield Links Golf Course, one of the oldest courses in the world, where you can have a round of pitch-and-putt.
From the apartment it is a short walk along George IV Bridge to the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle or down Candlemaker Row to the picturesque Grassmarket and the more earthy Cowgate, centre of the city’s nightlife. The Royal Mile, the backbone of medieval Edinburgh, connects Edinburgh Castle at one end with the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Parliament at the other. Don’t miss Victoria Street, one of the most charming streets in the city, with its colourful mix of shops, restaurants, cafés and bars; it snakes down from George IV Bridge to the Grassmarket.

Ideal location - Home away from Home
Left on 05/08/2013 for a stay in April 2013
This was the perfect rental for us. It was clean and quiet and the best location ever. Besides being next to the Greyfriar Kirkyard (what a history) but it was centrally located to everything. There is a market around the corner. We even hit the store down Tesco(?). down Chambers St & to the right. Martin was wonderful to work with and booking was a breeze. I hope this flat is available and in this perfect condition when I come back in 5 years w/ my daughter and husband for her graduation gift. I would not hesitate to stay here, again. I cannot say enough, this place became home away from home. Thank you for making my trip to Scotland perfect.

South Lake TahoeLovely Christmas at Greyfriars
Left on 01/10/2013 for a stay in December 2012
We (my husband, 10-year-old, and I) spent 4 nights in this lovely little flat over the Christmas holiday. The weather was typical for this time of year (a little rainy and cold, though Christmas day was wonderfully sunny for a walk around the city). It was great to come back to a cozy, warm, well-appointed flat. The beds were comfortable (including the pull-out), and the linens crisp. The kitchen was bright and had everything we needed, including a few little treats left by the manager. And the bathroom, while small, was clean and bright as well. The little fireplace was a cozy addition and a nice place to hang our stockings. The location is very central (it was especially nice to be right across the street from the National Museum of Scotland and within walking distance from everything we wanted to see). And I agree with others here that the added benefit of movies and books on Scotland was special. Don't be fooled by the less-than-pristine stairwell. We would definitely stay here again!

Renting through Vacation Rentals of Scotland was a breeze. They were friendly, helpful and had a wealth of information about the available in the rental unit. There was also tea with sugar and cream available, dishwashing detergent and laundry detergent.
#6 is a quiet unit, up two flights of stairs (we had a lot of luggage but it wasn't a bad haul up).
The unit was clean and the bed and couch bed were comfortable. The appliances were in good working order.
The location is excellent, right in the heart of Edinburgh. I adored the area and will (hopefully) be staying at Greyfriars #6 when I return! -

The location couldn't be better. Close to shopping, pubs, the Meadows park, a grocery store. The attention to detail and comfort was amazing. The fireplace was delightful and the washing machine was a real convenience on our extended stay. We spent two full weeks in the flat and could have been comfortable and happy for much longer!! The bed was very comfortable and linens were of high quality. We enjoyed having the kitchen for breakfasts in and an occasional soup supper after a long day touring the city. The reading lamps in the bedroom and living room were much appreciated. The frig stocked with a bottle of wine and a jug of milk was a pleasant surprise as was the coffee, tea and shortbread. We will definitely be back when we visit family living in Edinburgh.

Simple and authentic, few steps from Royal Mile, but in a quiet cul-de-sack, clean, with all necessary appliances and charming wooden furniture. From the very second we entered the apartment, we felt so much at home that on the date of departure we literary forgot that we had to leave. It is very homey with a fireplace, colourful carpets, thick walls and lovely windows with a picturesque view to a famous Greyfriars kirkyard. We loved little touches like welcome pack, tartan wool blanket, thistle decor on table pads, carefully selected books and movies related to Edinburgh and Scotland. Everything from the first to the last step was extremely well organized; Martin was very helpful, took a good care of us and always stayed in touch to answer our questions almost immediately. Fantastic place for a couple. Good value for money (April rate). Will definitely recommend it to my friends.

Arlington, Virginia, USAGreat experience at Greyfriars flat 6
Left on 05/25/2012 for a stay in April 2012
This was the second time I'd stayed at this particular flat, the first being in November 2011. I think that in and of itself should say something about the place. This visit, I had come to Edinburgh to run in the Rock N' Roll Edinburgh Half Marathon. The location was perfect for getting around town. Being situated right near the Meadows and a short walk to the Royal Mile, I could get anywhere I wanted by walking, or walking out to a main road to catch a bus. The location is perfect if you want to visit Edinburgh University, the Quartermile, the Meadows, the Castle, Holyrood Palace, Princes Street, and so forth.
It's a small flat which has plenty of room for 2 adults. The bed was very comfortable and the duvet kept me plenty warm during the cold nights. The Sainsbury's Local nearby was perfect for doing some shopping for food. Two Starbucks locations around the corner are very convenient too!
The only negative was that the flat was cold at night, but the flat has a nice gas fireplace and warm wool blankets, so that really wasn't an issue. The water in the shower was plenty warm as well.
I would only be wary if you have trouble with stairs as you need to walk up a few winding stairs to get to the flat. I had no issue with it, but I felt I should point it out to anyone for whom it might be of concern.
As far as rental property service, Martin did an excellent job with emailing back and forth with me, taking care of any details, and getting the keys for the flat to me well in advance of my traveling to Edinburgh from the United States.Response from Vacation Rentals Scotland - 05/29/2012
Manager
Sorry to hear that you found the apartment cold at night. The central heating is set to provide a warm apartment, and guests can temporarily adjust the thermostat if they require a boost to the temperature. We have checked the settings to make sure that they are correct and match the heating information given in the guest information booklet.
Regarding the stairs, the apartment is situated on the second floor, so there are two flights of about 20 stairs to climb. Unfortunately we don't have an option to install a lift/elevator because this is an historic building.
Best wishes

I stayed here for a week's sightseeing in Edinburgh. I can't imagine a better location for exploring the Old Town. Greyfriar's Kirk is literally just around the corner, and the Castle, the Royal Mile, the National Museum of Scotland, and the Meadows are just a short walk away.
The flat itself was very clean, well-equipped, warm and cosy. A very enjoyable week! -

Left on 10/18/2011 for a stay in September 2011
We stayed at this Greyfriars gem during the last leg of the Edinburgh International Festival. As trip planner in the relationship I was tasked with reviewing all the limited accommodation options during the city's, perhaps the country's biggest event of the year. Whilst weighing out the pros and cons of the limited supply of available rentals, what was very impressionable to me initially was the personal service that Vacation Rentals Scotland provided. As soon as I had completed and submitted a booking form online, I was contacted by an amiable gentleman, Martin, through phone! It was a very special greeting that could not be overlooked and having been in the customer service/human resources fields I took this proactive approach to service as a good indicator of the firm's professionalism. Needless to say the reservation and payment process was expeditious and seamless. All the staff were very kind and helpful.
We were sent the keys in advance and found the flat very easily. The directions provided by Martin and his team were once again faultless. The flat itself was a historic walk up which might provide antagonizing for those with larger suitcases or for those who have impaired mobility. However, the advantage of a walk up reveals itself in the great view over the adjacent Greyfriars Kirkyard. (If you have any hesitation with graveyards or non-extants then I would suggest another rental as you are practically sleeping on the necropolis. You could literally open the window jump onto the roof of an 18th century mausoleum and bound down to the city of the dead and you'll be trolling the weathered markers in a matter of seconds). There were constant tourists visiting the Kirkyard throughout the day and although they were visible through the windows they were not loud or obnoxious in any way.
The accommodation itself was very quaint if not a little dated. All the appliances were in working order. There was a great array of entertainment options provided to us in the flat: wifi, a tv with some good channels, cool Dvds and interesting tourist books interpolated with periodicals and everything else Scotland related. A washing machine in the flat made clean clothes easy but the lack of a dryer meant that dry clothes were not. The space was not huge but plenty for two people. We were surprised that on our arrival our flat had not been serviced having been left in a semi deranged state. According to the property management team this was due to error and we received a very apologetic email. It was a bit of a disappointment as their service had been so exemplary up to that point. After the flat had been cleaned and serviced we were much more at ease.
Enough cannot be said about the flat's location. It is truly ideal especially for those looking to stay during the Edinburgh International Festival. Other places of interest like the National Museum of Scotland and the National Library are directly across the street. Ubiquitous pubs, eateries, cafes and convenience stores line the street perpendicular to the flat's so finding something to eat is easy but choosing what might prove more difficult. For getaways from the city, Waverley Station is a brisk 15 minute walk. Nearby bus stops and taxis provided easy accessibility. All in all a perfect home base.
Although our stay at this vacation rental was not perfect, this is a situation where the pros definitely outweigh the cons. Moreover, the price we paid during the Edinburgh International Festival was extremely competitive. Come to think of it, we wished we could have stayed longer. If you stay here, make sure to visit Mum's Restaurant across the street and try their Treacle Dessert. It was mos def the one of the tastiest things we ate in the city and we devoured everything in sight in this athens of the North.
Happy Travels. -

Left on 06/26/2011 for a stay in June 2011
My family and me just came back from a trip to Edinburgh where we spent a few days in Greyfriars apartaments.
First of all, I can only say good words to all the support given before and during our stay with the arrangements of the keys sending before our arrival, the interest shown in our comfort, etc...
I have to say the flat exceeded my expectations (which already had been set high!) in every way. The location is very good (just 10 minutes walk from the royal mile), zero noise around, the facilities within the flat are more than enough, it was very clean upon our arrival. Two words can describe it: "Very comfortable".
I'll write just one thing that in my opinion can be improved (the only thing I found!): Even in June, the weather in Edinburgh can be wet & cold (we found rain and 14ºC max temperature). As a result, the flat was at times too cold and the gas heating was not giving any heat (I don't know if it's disabled in the summer). having said that, I'm sure this won't happen in winter.
To be honest, when I'll come back to Edinburgh, I´ll try to book this facility again, which I found superb. I highly recommend this rental facility to anyone that wants to feel like home in Edimburgh, and I will personally recommend it to all my friends.
Best regards,
AlbertoResponse from Vacation Rentals Scotland - 06/29/2011

Hi Alberto, Sorry to hear that you were cold at times. The heating should have been switched on for you (and there are instructions in the guest information about how to switch it on and off). Heating is available for guests 12 months of the year. We are always available by phone or email to help out with switching the heating on, etc. if there are any difficulties. Best wishes, Martin

I rented this flat for a week's sightseeing in and around Edinburgh and was extremely happy with my choice. The flat is very comfortable and well equipped (free Wi-Fi, washing machine, kitchen, library, and more), is cozy, warm, quiet and conveniently centrally located with a lovely view. Aside from the vicinity to the city centre and bus stop, there is also plenty of shops and pleasant restaurants nearby. Also, I liked that the owners were very quick to respond to any inquiries and helpful. My flight got canceled due to Grimsvötn eruption and I had to stay two more nights - the owners were extremely supportive and helpful extending my stay. I would definitely stay there again and highly recommend this rental.

Loved being back in Edi over 20 years after finishing studying there. The flat was in an ideal location for the old town, meadows and south side. Great size for a parent with kids. Only drawback was that we couldn't get the radiators working - but the gas fire (lovely touch) kept us cosy I suppose. Very typical Edi flat which I loved!

I was visiting Edinburgh from the USa for University of Edinburgh graduation ceremony, and this flat with about a 3 minute walk to the Uni's McEwan Hall (where it was held), was the ideal location. And it's around the corner from Sandy Bell's, one of the city's greatest and most famous pubs. Beyond that, it was clean, nicely laid out -- small, but certainly adequate for a couple or small family (one or two kids) or even two couples -- everything worked, heat was great including a gas fireplace (I was there during the recent freeze and snow), kitchen was well-stocked (glasses, plates, etc plus tea, coffee, etc), a washer...I could go on but suffice to say it was fantastic. Plus tons of area guides, "Scottish" books and Dvds (Trainspotting, Braveheart et al). All in all a comfy place to call home for a few days. I'd stay again in a heartbeat!

Left on 11/29/2010 for a stay in October 2010
Our stay was over Halloween and it was magical! It was a quiet flat but on Halloween, it was party central, which is okay. Also, be warned, that you sometimes hear the City of the Dead Tours come through the kirkyard and you have to expect to hear some screams now and then. Comes with the territory. The flat itself was lovey, clean and very comfortable. The only trouble we had was getting into the flat when we first arrived. If a maintenance man and neighbor hadn't been around to help us with the mortise key we'd still be at the door trying to get in! That lock has got to be changed...when I got the door instructions I knew we'd have trouble with that lock. Also, the shower system took a bit getting used to, but by the end of our stay, we had it pretty much mastered.
The instruction book that came with the flat was very useful. We loved the fireplace, kitchen and the washer was very handy to have. We used the fireplace as our "dryer"
It was nice having our own little place in Edinburgh...I'd love to come back to this magical city. Thanks Martin for all your help! -

The location is ideal because it is so central that you can go back there whenever you feel exhausted. We walked 4 full days through and around this lovely town and enjoyed to relax in this nicely furnished and warm and quiet flat with a view on to Greyfriars Kirk and Graveyard turning yellow and red with the autumn colours.

Our stay was really brilliant. Everything we needed. Stayed in Edingburgh for New Years when the city was buzzing but even though our appartment was a 5 minute walk from everything it was in a location off a main street and was lovely and quiet when we needed to chill out. It overlooked a quiet church and graveyard and it felt like we were overlooking a scene from Harry Potter! Absolutely beautiful! Our own gally kitchen left us totally independent but only minutes away from restaurants when we felt in total holiday mode and didn't want to cook! Even though it was winter and snowing outside the appartment was lovely and toasty warm, we would go back in a heartbeat and recommend it to everyone!

Do be aware that there are several flights of stairs. I felt very safe as a solo traveler. And Martin, the caretaker, was extremely helpful.

If you are from the us, you must always remember that some of the best things in Europe are found in alleyways and dark corners. Rounding the corner and down an alley shared by the University of Edinburgh lies a heavy red door beyond which are steps leading up to a very quaint apartment overlooking a beautifully kept cemetery with a mixed history. Inside of this apartment you will find everything you require for a vacation - a very comfortable bed with soft sheets and quilts, couches and chairs, plenty of on demand hot water, and a little TV for when you find yourself exhausted from the shopping and sight-seeing that are so accessible from this perfectly placed apartment. A short block away from a beautiful park where you can grill, little grocery stores so you can cook in the apartment, and a nice walk up the lane to Prince's Street, Rose Street and the Castle. You will fall in love with this little nest while being dazzled by the history that surrounds you. One small draw back - we couldn't find a chippie shop for a whole 2 blocks! One great plus - plenty of pubs within stumbling distance.

Hong KongGreyfriars flat: a real bargain
Left on 10/25/2010 for a stay in July 2010
The flat is not huge, but the space is more than adequate for two people. It's up a couple of flights of stairs, if that's an issue. It's well-appointed: comfortable bed, washing machine, kitchen facilities. The location is truly wonderful: the windows directly overlook Geyfriars kirkyard (no noise from tour groups, though). It's very quiet and private. It's also a fine central location for seeing the rest of Edinburgh. Music pub on the corner, another good one a block away.
In our opinion, you'd have to be nuts to stay in a hotel over this flat, which is much more homey and certainly less expensive.
Many thanks to VRS! -

The apartment was well equiped, comfy & cosy. It is in an area that has plenty of pubs and places to eat. Having said that the apartment, being off the main road, was in a quiet location - with lovely views over Greyfriars Church & grounds.
Had a lovely holiday and would recommend this apartment. -

Left on 10/24/2010 for a stay in August 2010
An exceptionally well located position central to all locations and sights we had on our Edinburgh holiday agenda. The unit was quiet, secure, bright, clean and very well appointed with all necessary mod-cons.
Also well positioned for food shopping, pubs and restaurants.
We highly recommend Greyfriars.
