Description from the manager
**Brand new property*** West Bow is in the heart of the World Heritage site of the Old Town of Edinburgh. This truly magnificent 2nd floor apartment is located on the famous & much photographed West Bow/Victoria Street of Edinburgh.
It is only 150 metres from entrance to Edinburgh Castle at the top of the Royal Mile. The apartment is only a few minutes walk from many other major Edinburgh attractions such as the Royal Scottish Museum and the National Gallery of Scotland. There is also a copious amount of bars, restaurants, cafes and shops in the immediate area. This apartment is furnished and decorated to a very high standard and is an...Read more

Left on 05/04/2013 for a stay in December 2012
The apartment is well-situated in the heart of Edinburgh. The lettings agency are nice to deal with, and sent a very useful summary of restaurants etc beforehand, as well as helping carry the bags upstairs when we arrived and giving a good show-round.
The apartment itself is lovely, comfortable, and well-equipped. The views of the street were pleasant, particularly with the Christmas lights up, and there was the added bonus of shutters which kept the light out and the heat in at night.
The only downside was the drunks and binmen. We never did understand why they had to collect the rubbish in the middle of the night every night, but we soon got used to it! -

Walk to everything. Comfortable. We saved up our laundry to use the washer. Were very disappointed to find there was no clothes dryer. And the washer was broken! I'm sure it's fixed now, but you have to dry your clothes on a rack. In all that rain and humidity? We felt we deserved a few pounds discount. But a great neighborhood and prime location.

It was unfortunate that the washing machine did breakdown but just like appliances in our homes they do from time to time in self catering properties and like in our homes it can take a few days to have them repaired. If I had been notified that I would have gladly paid for the cost of a launderette service. Subsequently the washing machine could not be repaired and the replacement machine is a combined washer/dryer.

Left on 01/23/2012 for a stay in November 2011
This is a delightful flat filled with everything necessary to have a comfortable stay. Beautifully decorated and charming. We stayed a week in November and enjoyed relaxing each evening in the comfortable sitting room and watching the street traffic. Street noise at times may be an annoyance if you are a light sleeper but earplugs and the shutters block it out nicely. A must try is Oink across the street - they're hog roast rolls can't be beat!

Left on 01/02/2012 for a stay in November 2011
Flat is very modern, has everything one needs for a city trip and has a perfect location! It is situatated in the middle of the city just 5 min walk for the National museum and 3 min for the castle and High street. There are bars, restaurants and plenty of pubs around. I prefered the National Museum which is worth for visiting again and again and again...
The flat is somewhere in the 3rd floor which is to take in mind for older travellers or guests with disability.
However, there was some impoliteness of the agent. We arrived somewhere between 6:58 and 7:00 pm - as my mobile phone registered the time of the 2 second long lasting phone call which I made as I could not find the number and was simply staying in front of the building. Nonetheless, the agent made a claim for the unsocial time arrival payment which is due for arrivals after 7pm. He didn't simply say this in the beginning, when nobody was watching the time more precisely and might have seen that we arrived accourately at 7 pm - he made the claim after showing us arround and explaining every detail of the flat. Even if we where 1 minute late this behaviour made us feel most unwelcome and cheated. -

Left on 01/02/2012 for a stay in December 2011

This was a beautiful flat in a brilliant location with bars, restaurants and shops all in walking distance. The flat itself was spacious with some lovely original features such as window seats. Being from a quiet are we did find it noisy on a night, though this was largely traffic noise and what you would expect from such a city centre location. Despite this overall we had a wonderful stay

Nice apartment, excellent condition, well heated, convenient, great location. Only hesitations are that the shower is tiny and two of three of our computers could connect to the internet wifi but there was 'no connectivity', so we couldn't access the web.

Left on 07/14/2011 for a stay in June 2011
We loved the high ceilings and spacious rooms in this historic apartment. The location is fantastic. Literally right in the middle of the action.
Downsides:
- While modern and stylish, the bathroom is tiny. (used to be a closet we guessed).
- The apartment is up 3 flights of stairs and there's no lift, so this could be a problem for anyone that has trouble walking and/or has heavy bags.
Upsides:
- Spacious rooms!
- High ceilings!
- Large Windows (Great views!)
- fast wifi internet!
- Location, location, location!
- Great price!

I would highly recommend this flat. Beautifully decorated, very clean, warm and comfortable. Plenty of space for 4 of us. Towels and linen were spotless. Sofa bed was perfect for our two children. The photos on the website don't do this flat justice. We would definately go back here. We were able to walk from the flat to all sights. Weather was great which made all the difference.

Left on 03/28/2011 for a stay in June 2010
Before I booked this flat I asked Glen about the levels of noise from the street, he told me it was normal street noise. I've lived in central London and Barcelona and West Bow does not offer "normal street noise". It is a rat run for the clubs and drunks, once they quieten down and I do mean dawn the rubbish collectors, coaches and cars start accelerating up the hill. There wasn't a chance of sleeping in the day as the road was being dug up whilst we were there! We did try to contact Glen after the first night y to ask him to move us to a quieter flat, he didn't respond to our calls. It is a shame because according to the web at the time he did have other flats vacant. Don't stay unless he triple glazes this place or unless you want to go out all night partying. We also didn't appreciate the heavy he sends around to make sure visitors leave the flat on time.

Left on 12/01/2010 for a stay in November 2010
The flat is old and quaint. Well placed for access to the Royal Mile, and surrounded by fantastic places to eat.
It was a bit cold during our stay, and the electric heating struggles in cooler weather. The Shower/toilet is in a cupoboard, so really not a place to share unless you are really close.
Downside, two clubs within 100 yards, that seemed to go on for ever. Street sounds came through the shutters till the early hours and we needed to get home for a sleep.
Certainly the most central I have ever stayed in Edinburgh, but the price was the noise. -

Left on 10/06/2010 for a stay in September 2010
Easy to book on-line and excellent communication. Meet and greet was helpful. Spacious lounge and very comfortable bed (although would have appreciated option of less generous doona [got hot] as unit seemed well insulated from the cold outside). Kitchen well equipped / washing machine (no dryer but clothes rack served its purpose). Stairs everywhere in Edinburgh and access to unit was no exception. Forgot to close shutters at night to block out some of the street chatter which was distracting during a time of celebration in Edinburgh and nearby clubs.

The flat was beautifully decorated and had everything you need. It was in a fabulous location with everywhere in the old town a stone's throw away. The only downside was the noise from the street - traffic and drunken revellers meant it was nigh on impossible to get a decent nights sleep. Still, it is still a great place to pick to stay and maybe out of festival season its a little quieter.

This is a lovely apartment. Every room is as pictured on website with the exception of the bathroom which is no more than a closet. The street, while extremely picturesque, was noisy all through the night and into the morning, due to both pedestrians and motor vehicles making sleep quite impossible. And, while we were told there was a washer and dryer prior to our visit, there was actually only a washer, which did not help us as our clothes took forever to dry. Other than that, the apartment is lovely. Perhaps it would be nicer during an off season.

I am very sorry that West bow did not come up to expectations. I did however find your review very conflicting. On one hand you have commented on what a lovely apartment it is but on your rating of comfort you only gave the property one star out five? I accept that the shower room is small but there is no deception here as there is a floor plan on the photo gallery of the website and it is the only small room in the property. I appreciate you perhaps have large bathrooms in the US but this a very old Edinburgh building. However despite the shower room being compact , it does provide every thing that is required of it very adequately.
For drying clothes there are hangers so unless there is an item of clothing you want to wear which you have forgot to wash I can see why waiting for natural drying might be an issue, however you were in the property for a full week and clothes do not take forever to dry even in Scotland. This set-up is also considerably more environmentally friendly.
I accept it must have been busy and noisy at times but you were located right in the city centre in one of the most famous & popular streets of Edinburgh during the one of largest art festivals in the world. The population of the city doubles in this time. There are full working shutters and thick curtains to combat noise pollution and earplugs are provided if required.
My last comment is regarding your disappointing rating for value, you stayed in a beautiful apartment in the heart of the Edinburgh during the peak of season for only 34 pounds per person per night. I think that is outstanding value. -

The West Bow apartment was my first self-catering experience and I do not regret one minute of it.
First, the location is superb, minutes walk from the Royal Mile and Grassmarket and also very close to Waverly Station and New Town. I walked all the time I was there, and I'm not a heavy walker; I only got a taxis at Waverly when I was carrying heavy bags and wanted the comfort of being dropped at home (about £5). I soon got used to the stairs to the apartment, good exercise.
Second, price is excelent if compared to a 4-star hotel (where I generally stay), about 2 to 2 1/2 times less expensive, I would not have stayed for about 15 days if it was not for the progressive discount for longer stays.
Third, the apartment has been recently refurbished and everything is new, clean and functioning. It's properly cleaned once a week.
Fourth, comfort is everywhere, from the high mattress to the big sofas. The kitchen has all the amenities needed for modern life. Two flat screen tvs, one in the bedroom! And wireless broadband for free, perfect.
Fifth and most important, it really feels like home. It's modern with an "ancient" touch, the atmosphere created by the decoration, the iron gas fireplace, the view of Victoria St. from every window.
All those features allowed me to have a taste of the life in the City, going to the supermarket (there`s an express Sainsbury's a short walk away, at Grassmarket), doing the laundry in the modern washing machine, even placing the rubish outside... I felt I really lived there and that is priceless.
Glenn and Dave were perfect gentlemen through the booking process and during my stay, with information and help.
I hope I can come back and stay there for many more times in the future.
