It features 68 historically significant structures with costumed interpreters, breathing life into an authentic 19th-century country village. It is also home to the newly renovated John L. Wehle Gallery and the Genesee Country Nature Center. A pioneer log settlement, with a cabin, oxen, barn and fields, represents the region’s earliest days of settlement. The main square includes an insurance office, physician’s and lawyer’s offices, general store, eight-room inn, town hall, girls’ seminary, a toweringly classic church and several homes. Greek Revival and Italianate mansions represent the variety of architecture in the latter portion of the century. The boyhood home of George Eastman, Eastman Kodak founder, is here, as is the first home built in the area by Nathaniel Rochester, from whom the city is named. Here, too, are a working brewery, blacksmith, working kitchens, potter with a rare wood-fired salt-glaze kiln, 19-century base ball played in the first and finest 19th-century replica ball park in the nation and dozens of other trades and craftspeople at work. In June there’s a weekend-long War of 1812 encampment. The July 4th Independence Day celebration features patriotic ceremonies and a naturalization of citizens. July also sees one of the northeast’s foremost re-enactments of Civil War battles. In August kids enjoy Laura Ingalls Wilder Days with hands-on activities that appeal to all ages and a Fiddler’s Fair that brings hundreds of musicians from across New York State. In October, it’s the Agricultural Fair & Carnival and an after-hours Sprits of the Past Theatrical Tours. “Yuletide in the Country” in December features guided theatrical candlelight tours.
