Casa del Cielo de las Estrellas is a charming beach front villa located just 5 miles south of Mahahual. It is a tranquil place far from mainstream tourism and full of options for discovery, adventure and relaxation. Enjoy activities like swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, beach combing, or bird watching.
Our two-story vacation home has been tastefully decorated and furnished and is designed to accommodate up to six guests. It is rented as a single unit only. You never have to share our exceptionally wide private beach (210 feet) or its amenities with other guests! This is an eco-friendly, self-sustained house. Our water supply is... maintained by rainwater collection and electricity is generated with a solar-electric power generation system.
The villa sits sea-side on an extraordinarily large (1.5 acre) and delightfully landscaped beach lot. It is very secluded and private. The caretaker casita, with the caretaker family providing assistance and 24/7 security, is in 150 feet distance from the main house and neighboring lots are not developed. For additional privacy and security access to the property has been restricted with lateral fences and a fence at the beach road. The beach road does not cut through, but is set behind the property in 200 feet distance from the main house.
The house has two full bathrooms with warm water showers. Downstairs the house features a large kitchen- living-dining area with a fully equipped kitchen. A beautiful catalox (a native hardwood) dining table and rustic spiral stairs around a hardwood tree trunk set special accents to this room. Custom-build very large arched mahogany windows open to the ocean side for unobstructed views and optimal ventilation. The tiled front porch is shaded by the balcony and is our favored breakfast spot. A seating area behind the house is accessible through the back door. Here you can fully enjoy the beauty of our lush tropical garden and jungle park and observe birds and other animals. It also provides tranquility and shade during exceptionally windy days.
Upstairs our villa features two cooling-fan equipped bedrooms, each with a double bed and a roll-out bed and one of the rooms with an additional couch. A small locker room for storage of suitcases and cloths also contains a security lock box for valuables. Independently from both bedrooms, you can step out onto our spacious shaded balcony, which is a favorite place for hanging out in hammocks and catching a fresh sea breeze during hot afternoon hours. It is also a great place for an unforgettable moonlight dinner and to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over the Caribbean Sea. Stairs from the balcony lead to the tiled rooftop patio, which offers panoramic Caribbean views. It is ideal for tanning during the day (nude sun-bathing possible here) and for fantastic stargazing during the night (hence the name of the house).
Our private beach has many fruit-bearing coconut palms. String up a hammock between palms or at a Sea Grape tree and relax from the intense rays of the Caribbean sun.
Instead of converting our beach into a sand desert– unfortunately the common practice at most beach properties– we landscaped our beach by retaining and planting native salt-tolerant plants that interlace in large patches open sand areas. These patches are not only much more beautiful, but also prevent erosion and provide diverse habitats for beach-dwelling animals.
The drop off at our beach is very good and in contrast to other Costa Maya beaches you don’t have to wade through very shallow water for hundreds of feet before you reach greater water depths, but you can swim and snorkel directly from the beach. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef in front of Casa del Cielo de las Estrellas is arguably the finest snorkeling site in the Mahahual region. Minimal tide action, the lack of currents and of high waves provide for safe swimming and kayaking conditions, even for beginners.
In addition to free bottled water, weekly changed fresh towels and linens, propane gas, board games, CD player, etc., we also offer special amenities to make a beach vacation enjoyable: These include the free use of kayaks, life vests and snorkeling gear, an outdoor grill and the availability of a large and diverse library that includes a comprehensive collection of Caribbean and Mexico nature guides.
Last but not least, our very friendly caretaker will be always happy to assist with your problems, questions and special needs and to help making your visit at Casa del Cielo de las Estrellas an unforgettable pleasant vacation.Read more

I won't repeat content from the many enthusiastic reviews that this place has already received ... all of the raves are true! I would particularly recommend this rental for nature-lovers: bird-watching from the rooftop deck in the morning and evening was aweseome. There are a couple of things people should be aware of: because of the lovely winding staircase, this would not be a good rental for anyone with mobility issues or disabilities. The road from Mahahual can be just atrocious, but it was re-graded while we were there in February 2014. While many property owners keep their beaches clean, there are long stretches of the beach which are terribly littered. If you travel beyond the resorts in the "developing" world, you will know what I mean. But the place is just lovely in so many ways, and Darvey is not only attentive and competent, he's fun and interesting. And the four of us, not huge dog-lovers in general, got totally fond of T and Scooby! We recommend the Travel In for meals, too...very good food! We even ventured to town on a cruise ship day, and it wasn't too crazy.

Wow...not even sure where to start!
Mahauhal: I was not sure what to expect, but I was blown away. Mahahual was beautiful! The raw, untouched beaches stretch for miles in both directions. Plenty of things to do. Snorkeling directly in front of the house was incredible. There are two man made reefs very close to shore with plenty of fish and sea creatures to see. There is also an amazing large reef a bit further out. We saw many different types fish. Also saw a Spotted Eagle Ray for the very first time! There are several Maya ruins within an easy drive of the house as well. No crowds. We also made several trips into town for meals and shopping. Even on days that the cruise ships were not in port, there were plenty of shops and restaurants open.
House: What a lovely property! The owner's have put a lot of hard work into landscaping and upkeep. The grounds have walkways, palapas, benches, pond, as well as a tree swing all surrounded by tropical vegetation. It feels like your own private paradise. The house was clean and well maintained. The bedrooms are on the 2nd floor which allows a nice sea breeze to keep things comfortable for sleeping. We enjoyed the hammocks on the 2nd level patio at night...can watch the moon come up over the ocean. We also enjoyed the rooftop patio for stargazing. Before the moon comes up the stars are so bright that it feels like you are in a planetarium! The house is well stocked with plates, utensils, pots and pans, basic seasonings, etc... I would recommend bringing dish and bath soap as well as purchasing tin foil or plastic wrap if you plan to cook and store food.
The entire trip was a wonderful experience. What made it even nicer was that one of the owner's, Rudolf, was in town house sitting for a friend. Rudolf took us to some beautiful beaches to show us where to find sea beans. He also took us out snorkeling. He made the experience that much richer with his insights and information. It was a pleasure to meet him - thank you!

A very special place this Casa del Cielo de las Estrellas. Far from the crowded areas, close enough to the village of Mahahual for basic shopping, with a private enchanted beach, the house has pretty much everything you need. Don't expect luxury, but good taste in interior and exterior decorating is everywhere. You'll have that warm feeling of being in a good place.
The house is not big but we never felt like we needed more space (I have to mention that, for one week, 3 friends came along and joined us). No conditioned air, but the windows were open almost all the time (don't worry about bugs, there are screens at every single window) and that was enough to cool down the place even at 40 C outside. The breeze from the sea was almost perpetual and it made a big difference.
Things to do around there: swim and snorkel right in front of your house, go visit the myriad of Mayan ruins, fish and cook your capture (even I was able to catch fish), go kayaking, look for sea shells and marine snails. Or just sit on one of the 3 terraces or under the palapa just nearby the shore line and have a drink or a cup of tea. Regarding activities, Rudolf's Internet site is a gold mine data wise. And he'll answer your questions in no time.
You'll love the taste of the fresh fruits there (don't hesitate one moment to buy them from the vendors on the side of the highways) and, if you're not very swanky, you'll like the local made cheese and ham as well.
We ate 2 or 3 times at the local restaurants and a few other times outside Mahahual, in little "cocina"s located in small villages. The simple, not very fancy ones, won by far, in my opinion.
Anyway, if you're looking for tranquillity and you're trying to get disconnected from today`s world tumult, Casa del Cielo de las Estrellas is the place to be.
Did we lack anything while there? Yes: a blender and a shaker!
Will we go back? Certainly. If time will allow. That's another thing we lacked there. Whish we could've stayed longer...

We spent almost 2 weeks at this lovely sea front villa, which is surrounded by a stunningly beautiful beach, garden and jungle. If you like a secluded and tranquil vacation spot- this is it! Mahahual is 3 hrs away from the touristy areas of the Mexican Caribbean, but we did not mind the long drive in exchange for a holiday away from the hustle and bustle of the resort towns of the northern Yucatan. Casa del Cielo de las Estrellas sits in an exceptional nice Costa Maya location on the beach 5 miles south of Mahahual. The area is not developed and there are no other rental houses in proximity. The closest permanent neighbor, the Cabah-na cabanas with a nice bar, is about a quarter mile away. Every day we got up early in the morning to have coffee viewing the spectacular Caribbean sunrises and then spent most of our time snorkeling, swimming and kayaking. We had 2 stormy days which we used for excursions to see spectacular Mayan pyramids (40 min drive) and for beach combing (lots of sea beans!). Special thanks to the owners for providing very detailed information and tips for these trips. The nicely decorated house is well equipped. Carpentry work by local artisans gives the house a very special touch. Its octagonal shape with windows facing all directions of the windrose, allows for an optimal climatization by the sea breeze. I like to mention the library: aside of many good reads it contains an almost comprehensive collection of more than 30 Mexico or Mesoamerica nature guides (reef fish, plants, trees, birds, reptiles, mammals, even star gazing). The outdoor facilities (terraces, balcony, multiple seating areas, sun shelters) are amazing. They are exceptionally large and inbedded in the landscaped garden or beach area. We especially liked the bench at the freshwater pond. Many birds came to the pond for water and it was a very good spot for bird watching. We recommend Casa del Cielo without reservation and hope we can come back.

Our trip to Mahahual was most enjoyable! The house is quite beautiful inside, tiled throughout. There are shaded porches on 1st and 2nd floors looking out on palms, sea grapes and beach. There is a top viewing deck to observe countless stars with a resident iguana. They have an extensive library of books on sea life, plants, Mayan culture. Also, wireless connection was very much appreciated.
The property is large, very private with pond and exceptional array of trees and plantings (some orchids) and numerous paths to explore. During 2 week stay the wind blew constantly - felt wonderful, kept bugs away; we were never hot. Last day, no wind, so numerous bugs. Coming in January, brief strong rainstorms came and went quickly nearly every day - dramatic and refreshing.
For beach combing, no shells, but plenty of interesting seedpods. Recycling has not arrived in this remote area, so unfortunately the beach had plenty of discarded plastic. I realize concern for ecology is still new in most parts of the world. My friend enjoys birds, so with pelicans and frigate birds soaring overhead, we enjoyed a jay's serenade - remarkable vocal range. Glimpses of hummingbird, yellow banana twit, red headed woodpecker.
With strong breeze and some water chop, I was concerned about water safety, yet realized wind and waves always came inland. I never found artificial reef directly out front, but spot to the right offered good snorkeling. Saw many striped grunts, blue tang, butterfly fish, Sergeant major, needlefish and spotted trunkfish. Also, saw several lionfish, blue parrotfish, 4 cuttlefish. Enjoyed visiting this spot regularly to more closely observe fish behavior.
Travel to get there is a bit arduous. Driving dirt road from small town of Mahahual is challenging - deep potholes, slow going, but well worth the effort. For those who value spending time in a place with privacy and natural wonders to appreciate and enjoy, I highly recommend!
Update Feb 27, 2013: The beach road south of Mahahual has been repaired and driving conditions have vastly improved.
Wonderful seaside house

Beautiful location very close to the sea situated in a lovely garden - a wonderful place for a holiday away from the crowds, although there are several small cafes and hotels fairly near which offer good food.
The house is well laid out and a caretaker lives in the grounds to answer any queries. The sea is lovely and warm and the snorkelling is good - we spent a lot of time in the sea! Kayaks are available at the house, which we used to go out to the reef. We would definitely like to go back, but would probably hire a jeep or similar as the beach road was in poor condition. Booking was very straightforward and the owner gives a huge amount of useful visitor information on his website.

Made holiday with two children (8 and 10 years) the beach villa was perfect. The little garden with the pond and its crabs, the privat beacht with the palapas, the kajaks, the artificial reef (made by the house owner) ... all that made our stay very short timed and interesting.
The caretaker and his family is very nice, helpful and friendly and the guarddogs are very friendly.
Unfortunately, we were a little unlucky with the weather because of influences of "Sandy" so we were happy having so much space for relaxing on the big balcony, playing with children, cooking etc.. we enjoyed it very much!
It is very important that you make your proper grocery in Tulum in one of the supermarkets because in Mahahual you have only small shops with fresh vegetables, fruits, tortillias, etc. but more or less no packed things. If you need something special ask the caretaker, we are sure that he will help you.
We were there at the end of October so the Hurricane season has nearly ended and the road from/to Mahahual was in a little bit a poor condition so we need 40 min for the 8.5 km from the house to Mahahual... but to be honest, it was a great adventure and not dangerous.
We can recommend the house, it is well equipped, has a lot of space, the property is very very nice arranged and the roof terrasse is amazing! If you are looking for quite and relaxing holiday Mahahual Beach House is definately the right destination!

Everything you could imagine for a wonderful Caribean holiday. The white sand beach fringed with coconut palms, the reef for snorkelling, the lobster you can buy from local fishermen and grill on the barbecue, the roof top sun deck where you can watch for shooting stars as they flash across the milky way.
You're far enough from the local town not to be bothered by other tourists, but close enough to take advantage of all the restaurants and bars.
There is a wide range of things to do and sites to see, all of which are mentioned in the owner's web site which is a mine of information. Thanks to the site we had a very clear idea of what to expect and it allowed us to save time hunting for details by ourselves.
Darvey, the caretaker, did everything possible to make the stay memorable. He is very efficient and extremely courteous. A real plus for the property.
As said in the reviews above, the beach road is pretty bad (but this mustn't stop you from coming) and you may want to stock up on food from one of the bigger supermarkets in Playa del Carmen or Chetumal.
All in all a wonderful Caribbean getaway.

Our stay in the beachfront villa was absolutely lovely. A highlight was kayaking out to the reef, tying to a buoy and snorkeling the other side of the reef where the coral and fish were abundant and amazing. Other highlights were reading in the hammocks by the sea in complete privacy, cooking our lobsters which the care-taker, a really great guy, caught for us, experiencing a brilliant "light show" when a storm blew in across the ocean at night, beautiful sunny days just relaxing, and amazing trips to the ruins including a hike into the jungle with a Mayan guide. The owner's extensive notes on both trips to take and general guide to the villa itself were so helpful. Rarely does an owner take the time to be as thoughtful and thorough. I think it would be difficult to do without a car if you plan any trips. However, you may want to consider a 4 wheel drive if you are renting due to the condition of the road south of Mahahual. If you are not planning trips and can arrange transport to Mahahual, a taxi into town would be easy to do and not very expensive. All in all, it was difficult to leave the beauty of the "naturally landscaped" property and lovely home. We hope to return to Villa Casa del Cielo de las Estrellas!

We stayed at beach villa for a week, and that was most perfect time in our vacation in january. We were two, but house is perfect for 4 people- 2 good bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, perfect roof-top sun-deck and big living room with kitchen and sofa. Beach front location gave perfect fresh air and silence all arround, in yard lots of tropical birds and two very very nice doggies! Small town mahahual is just 15min by car away (actually close, but the road is small and sand-based - small shops, bars. Beach - totally emty, in the sea - privately made reef and lots of fish! Sun rise in sea - perfect! And coconuts in the garden! We were lucky to meet owners - traveled together to local carpenteria, lonley beaches, watched birds. Check beach villa homepage for lots of things to know if on the way or before trip! Owners consult on any question, very helpful! If travelling by car, closest big shopping around 1-1.5h away in Chetumal from south and to the north biggest cities. And if You want to be back in reality - hard rock cafe is 25min away :)
