Description
What's your passion? Walking, cycling, history, nature, food, UFO's, canoeing, climbing, luxe cinema, theme parks, , kid mayhem or cocooning?
Indulge it all at from Weavers Cottage in the beautiful village of Bonsall. We have high speed Wi-Fi broadband and off-street parking.
Bonsall is a pretty, unspoilt village, linked to the famous Limestone Way path and blessed by two great pubs, a cafe-restaurant and a fantastic new village store (open seven days a week).
It has two atmospheric and spacious bedrooms, a galleried study/play area, dining area , luxury bathroom and kitchen.
You can explore the region by the network of footpaths or strike out by car or bike to the nearby historic attractions such as Chatsworth Hall, Haddon Hall and Arkwright's Mill, a World Heritage Site, or let loose with the kids at Gulliver's Kingdom, Heights of Abraham or our very own "Play Mill" down the hill at Cromford.
Bonsall is famous for UFO sightings (the pub does occasional tours!) and we now have an uber-cool sofa/lounge cinema "Northern Lights" at Wirksworth.
Eat in or out on the dining terrace with only the sounds of farm and wildlife for company, or stroll to one of the village pubs. There are too many other good eating options in nearby towns and villages. Serious walkers, climbers and cyclists have endless choices beginning at the doorstep or from points across the National Park.
Further details indoors
You enter into a small hall, which also houses the cloakroom. The lounge has a welcoming gas coal effect fire inset in a natural stone surround fireplace. Off the lounge is the kitchen that has a large gas cooking range and all the essential equipment you will need for your stay. Two stone steps from the lounge lead to the dining room and there is a further door that takes you into the garden. Stairs from the dining area lead to the galleried landing that has an open area where you can read, work, or the kids plan play. (Well stocked with toys and games - lego, playmobil...) One bedroom has a king size bed and the other has a double bed, both bedrooms have vaulted beamed ceilings.
The third bed ( front facing ) is a light single with wardrobe and toy chest.
The wall art, including the spectacular tiger, was painted by Lithuanian artist, Kai Suede.
The large bathroom includes an enclosed seated steam sauna and multi jet shower unit, rolled top bath with claw and ball feet, toilet and hand basin. Duvets, linen and towels provided.
Further details outdoors
The extensive rear hillside garden is on several levels. There is a lovely corner sofa on the 2 level deck,a large outdoor table and chairs and a smaller metal patio set.
. The garden is very steep and care does need to be taken, especially in the path to the very top. There is also a pond frequented by frogs and newts! Above the cultivated section (which is only one third of the total area), teeming with wildlife, rocky outcrops and wild flowers. there is a wilderness left to nature. Adventurous are welcome to explore.
Local attractions begin in Matlock Bath, with Old England's take on Disney at Gulliver's Kingdom theme park and the caves and cable car at Heights of Abraham . Matlock Town has a wonderful park (half-pipes for skateboarders, boats, trains, funky paddling pool and minigolf. Cromford boasts Mr Arkwright's Mill (World Heritage Site) and the adjacent mining museum. Response from the owner My initial reaction to this review was to write it off given we have had, as noted, consistently great feedback on the cottage over the years, most of which does not appear in review as the vast majority of visitors simply enjoy the place and not see it as an exercise in amateur journalism. So hopefully the one and only time, here is a blow by blow response to the "critique" I was disappointed the moment we parked up. The outside of the cottage is tired and in need of repainting - its several hundred years old, its alive and well. the lead is hanging off most of the windows - actually not. They are double glazed at the front with faux "leading" inside and in some cases it has peeled off inside the window. Its actually my least favourite aspect of the house but frankly the windows are high quality and its not on the high priority for replacement, The dead ‘Christmas tree’ in a pot outside the front door - not sure why "inverted commas" there - whatever it was, its not there now, n oldA bench that looks like it’s never seen a lick of paint or varnish since it was purchased. - i call it "weathered". Anyway, sadly been replaced for a new one. "There were a handful of pretty flowers in the garden and what looked like a brand new hanging basket so at least someone is aware it needs some desperate attention to get some kerb appeal. " Honestly? i have passed on regards to Kim the gardener who is employed to maintain the extensive outside grounds. Inside, the cottage was cluttered, dated and dull. Its several hundred years old and furnished largely with period furniture. Its painted yellow, its in a valley. Christmas decorations in a vase in July?! I wish it could be Christmas every day. But they aren't Xmas decorations, . However, the seal around the fridge door was black and mouldy. - duly noted, cleaner actioned. It contained 2 half used bottles of mayonnaise, a huge jar of Branston with a half inch of pickle in it, butter which had been used and a few other used items which surely should’ve been thrown out before we arrived? I can understand leaving sealed, unused items with a clear use by date but not opened food stuffs that could have been carrying all sorts of bacteria. Message - use your common sense if a previous guest kindly leaves some usable items and you don't fancy them There was an unopened pint of in-date milk and an unopened packet of biscuits left but I’m not sure if they were part of a ‘welcome pack’ or had just been left from the previous occupants. "Welcome"! Something had been spilt in the kitchen, splattering onto the kettle, the side of the units and down the front of the washing machine. It looked disgusting but took some hot water and 2 minutes of elbow grease to remove it. Why was this not done before we arrived? - Thanks for fixing. The bathroom was ok, it was probably fabulous when it was fitted but keep the blind closed as there’s no frosted window. - thanks, that's why there is blind, There’s huge cobwebs above the equally huge shower, a nice metal stingray on the wall and a funky turquoise painted door. - its not painted, its an Amtico flooring. The rear bedroom overlooks the outside seating area so don’t expect a great view. No do! The view goes all the way up to the brow of the hill. The "outside seating area" is for your enjoyment but if you push it all the way to the window, the view will be obscured. The massive bed has a wooden frame surrounding the mattress which makes it difficult to get in and out of, not to mention catching your shins on it - its a Ligne Roset Peter Maly classic design bed, retails about £3k. not everyone's taste. s it’s virtually the same colour as the wooden floor - its also made of wood. . Saying that, once in it, it’s very comfortable. - it performs its actual function well. The table was filthy - its an outdoor table, weathered by the elements. so we didn’t even bother uncovering the seating - there are six excellent chairs for our enjoyment and covers for the table. . To get drinks and food up there would be a feat in itself and watch out on those steps after a couple of glasses of wine - enjoyed 17 years of wining and dining up there, no falls yet reported. , we managed to make a gloomy space look ok - and no steps to negotiate. its a hillside cottage, it isn't gloomy, its a wonderful place. I’d be concerned letting children out into the rear garden due to all the steep steps.- supervision of children is a good idea up to a certain age. My 13 year old has grown up there and loves taking his friends exploring the hidden corners,. With some care and a lot of attention Weavers Cottage could be a beautiful, quirky, light and airy cottage, with furniture and soft furnishings that suited the style of the building - sorry i disagree as virtually every other guest who has stayed there does. but as it is currently, I wouldn’t recommend it and certainly won’t be making a return visit. - You won't be accepted back - the cleaner reported it was in a exceptional mess on departure and i reported that to TripAdvisor. As the guest who came immediately after you (i showed him your review) said - "my experience was completely the opposite" . I really can't understand why anyone would spend two days in a place and devote such unwarranted negativity. This review is the subjective opinion of a TripAdvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. “Bonsall base camp!”
We stayed here for a few nights four years ago and were so impressed we booked two weeks this time. The characterful Derbyshire cottage is like a tardis - we had no problems with 2 adults and our 3 boys 5, 10 and 15. Oldest quite happy on camp bed. Kitchen very well equiped. Main bathroom has big bath and combo shower / mini steam room Bonsall village is quiet but has 2 pubs, 1 cafe / small shop, is a 25 minute wall to the UKs greatest bookshop in Cromford and a short drive to many Dales and Peak District attractions. Wider range of shops a short drive away in Matlock. We had great weather so were out most of the time, or chilling on provided garden furniture, but in less great weather the cottage is chocked full of DVDs, computer games, kids toys, books.... We will be back I'm sure next time we make the trip from Australia.

“Beautiful cosy cottage in a delightful village”
The cottage in Bonsall was warm, well equipped and beautifully renovated and restored. Lovely decor throughout with a great kitchen. Very comfortable beds with nice linen and towels. A mezzanine play area which made for a very happy 2 year old. The village is friendly with lovely cafe and good amenities like swing park, walks and pubs. Great base for trips out too
