Description

Originally a barn this beautifully converted luxury, detached gite, has it's own private garden area, sitting amongst trees on the edge of the charming village of Crazannes, just a 5 minute walk from the River Charente. The nearest town is Saintes which as well as offering many places to visit with its Roman Heritage, has all your shopping needs. This gite has 2 double bedrooms one of which has an ensuite bathroom, and one twin room. There is a separate shower room. Please note that at the doorways into one of the double bedrooms and the twin room, there are low beams of 5'4". Downstairs is completely open plan with a spacious and well equipped kitchen / dining area and a living area with ample seating. There is a wood burning stove so the gite is ideal even for an autumn or winter break. This attractive, comfortable and very well equipped gite is ideal for family holidays with everything you would need for a young family. Or this peaceful setting is ideal for a quiet get away. Spend the day by the pool or relaxing in the garden. Or visit one of the many beaches most of which are just a 40 minute drive. Also perfectly located for those who wish to explore the area or to just relax and enjoy the weather! With beautiful sunny days throughout the year this makes it a perfect location for walking and cycling and enjoying the surrounding countryside and for visiting the many beautiful towns and villages. What's in the area?: With just a 40 minute drive north west to the Atlantic coast you will find the sunny beaches of Fouras and Chatelaillon Plage. And to the south west, still just 40 minutes, there are the beautiful beaches of Saint-Georges-de-Didonne and St Palais-sur-Mer. With many more but unfortunately we haven't visited them all! With Cognac a 35 minute drive, tours around one of the famous Martell, Hennessy or Remy Martin distilleries are a must. Just 50 minutes is the beautiful coastal town of La Rochelle, a must for any shopper! La Rochelle has a wonderful ambience with many restaurants bursting on to the pavements. Seafood is of course the speciality. Just 60 minutes to the stunning Ile de Re. With wonderful shops to browse round at Ile de Martin and an amazing choice of pavement cafes and restaurants, all looking on to the harbour. Ile de Re has many beautiful beaches and more wonderful quaint villages to wonder around.

“Immaculate, well equipped, very comfortable!”

Reviewed 1 Apr 2023

We stayed in La bergerie for 8 days in March and it was a truly lovely experience. A very comfortable space, beautifully presented - and one of the best equipped kitchens I've come across in a holiday let! Catherine was so helpful and available to answer any questions. The village is pretty and quiet, and within reach of all sorts of lovely places. Thoroughly recommend.

Response from the owner Thank you for taking the time to write a reply. We appreciate all feedback. We are so sorry you felt this way about the pool and Wi-Fi. We have specific times for the pool as we have 2 gites and do not wish anyone to be disturbed late into the evening. It is also to allow us to add chemicals to maintain the pool and also to allow us to cover the pool at night in an attempt to maintain the temperature. We never enforced the times with your boys even when they were using the pool a long time after our suggested pool closing time, and delayed covering the pool until after the boys had finished using it in the evening. Unfortunately with respect to the Wi-Fi we are in rural France and internet connection is just not great. We sincerely hope this did not affect your holiday at la Petite Bergerie. Kind regards Catherine and Terry

“Fantastic stay, lovely place and really helpful host”

Reviewed 25 Sep 2017

We stayed at La Bergerie as a party of 4 adults and two babies in early September. The owner (Catherine) went out of her way to ensure we had everything we needed for the babies - travel cost, high chair, baby seat etc which was great and meant we could pack less stuff. We got the overnight ferry from St. Malo and drove down. It took us Mayne 4-5 hours, although it was our first proper time in France and with babies we were stopping every 5 minutes so I'm sure we could do it a fair bit quicker. The house itself was really nicely done out, very peaceful and had pretty much anything you could possibly need to just turn up and enjoy a self catering holiday. We found a few good things to visit locally (we drove to them but could have walked to some of them had we not had kids and a pregnant traveller!). I don't think there is really much of a town or village within a sensible walking distance (hence it's very peaceful!) Although we regularly drove down to the very beautiful Saint Savinien - a small town with some very old parts to it - which was only 5 minutes (literally) in the car. There we found bakeries, banks, supermarkets, bars, restaurants etc - basically everything needed. We visited the Chateau De Crazannes (about 5 mins away) which was beautiful and had lots of history. There's a little sculpture trail around the nearby old quarry which our toddler loved. The port town of La Rochelle was Maybe 40 mins by car and worth a visit. The highlight for us was visiting Il de Rey - which was maybe an hour away. Its an island accessible only via a really long man made bridge (with a toll fee of about £7 return) and is well worth a whole day to explore - beaches, shops, harbour, vineyards, lots of cycling etc. Saintes is a decent size town about 15/20 mins away by car and was another great place to visit - it had a fabulous market on the day we visited, with some amazing produce. There's an impressive cathedral, lots of shopping and eating, boat trips on the river etc. We also visited the remains of a Roman amphitheatre there, which was really worth a visit. In terms of food shopping, we visited the 'Super U' supermarket at St. Savinien which had everything needed. 2 of our party managed to wangle an evening meal out and Catherine very kindly offered to pick us up at 10pm which was very helpful. We stayed at La Bergerie for 10 nights and would recommend it highly. The only very slight down side was that there wasn't any town nearby which was sensible walking distance, although with young children, this was not a major issue for us. But for a relaxing getaway, it was brilliant.

“Lovely cottage in great location”

Reviewed 24 Aug 2015

We spent a lovely week at the gite, unfortunately the weather wasn't so lovely but this made us get out more to explore the area. The gite was spotlessly clean on our arrival, and Catherine the owner was there to greet us. The whole property is beautifully and tastefully decorated, with lovely antique French furniture in the bedrooms. The open plan downstairs area was very spacious, and the kitchen is very well equipped with everything you need. A visit to the Roman amphitheatre at Saintes is a must, also the aquarium at La Rochelle. The beaches near St Palais sur Mer are excellent, especially the walk through the sand dunes to get there. (Avoid the town if you don't like tourist resorts though!). Unfortunately we didn't get to use the pool much due to the weather, but it's a lovely pool. We went for a walk around Crazannes every evening after dinner, it's a beautiful little village. Only downside is the wifi was quite weak so it was difficult to plan walks, places to visit and check the weather forecast (we normally do this using the internet once we get somewhere and plan our days accordingly), so maybe a few maps or books about the local area would be a good idea (there were however plenty of leaflets for attractions). But overall a lovely holiday in a great house and location, we didn't want to leave!

Response from the owner Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a lovely review, we're delighted you enjoyed your stay here. Just a note for our future guests regarding the wifi. Wifi is always an issue in rural France however as we explained to our guests I had made an error and had accidentally placed our router behind a 2 foot thick wall!! Once I understood my error I immediately put it in the correct place and I believe that the connection was greatly improved! Proof of which was that we had a family of 6 in the following week 3 of whom were teenagers and there didn't seem to be a problem! We do provide a huge amount of leaflets for all the attractions in the area and a Lonely Planet Guide to France and there is of course French TV available ideal for local weather.
