Description from owner

Description

Coille Diobhain cottage is situated in an ancient wood of the same name, at the end of an enchanting, winding track up through the woods. The setting offers a wonderful sense of calm, with only the sounds of the trees, birds and animals to be heard. Sitting at an elevation of around 500ft, on the lower reaches of magnificent Glen Roy, there are great views of some of the UK's highest peaks, including Ben Nevis and the Grey Corries.

The location is close to the village of Roy Bridge, which has dining options in two local hotels, and also a railway station with direct links to London (sleeper service), Fort William and Glasgow. Three miles west is Spean Bridge village, and it is only a fifteen minute drive to the regional centre of Fort William, known as the Outdoor Capital of the UK.

The former shepherd's cottage has been extended and refurbished, giving it double, twin and single bedrooms (including a double and single downstairs), a shower-room and bathroom (the latter downstairs), and dedicated dining and sitting rooms. The large windows offer panoramic views of the woodland and nearby 4,000ft mountains.

A significant extension in 2013 resulted in the creation of a beautiful new living room with panoramic windows, wood-burning stove, oak wood flooring, and stunning mountain and woodland views.

Additional enhancements to lower the environmental impact of your holiday include the installation of solar panels, highly efficient electric radiators, and the overall use of green electricity instead of gas at the cottage.

The cottage is ideal for family and outdoor activity holidays such as walking, hiking, bird-watching, climbing, fishing, mountain-biking and winter sports, as well as for those seeking a quiet or romantic getaway, or simply seeking relief from the stresses of daily life.

Further details

Welcome pack provided on arrival.

The woodland slopes steeply to the east of the property, beyond a safety fence. We advise guests to avoid this part of the property.

There is an overhead power cable which crosses the property, approximately half way up the road to the cottage. Caution must be exercised if carrying electrically conductive objects overhead, such as a fishing rod.

The 200m winding road up to the property may be unsuitable for certain vehicles. In winter, four wheel drive may be required to reach the cottage (alternatively please park near the gate).

Vodafone mobile network available at the property. Other networks are available in or near Roy Bridge village.

Further details indoors

Floors carpeted throughout (except for bathrooms, kitchen, living room). Oak wood flooring in the living room. Wood-burning stove in the living room.

Primary heating from newly installed latest generation electric radiators in each room.

High chair and travel cots for infants.

Please note, the single room downstairs is a small room which utilises the lower part of a bunk bed.

Further details outdoors

Parking space for multiple vehicles. Land encompasses approximately two acres of grass land surrounding the cottage, and seven acres of mixed native woodland, and temperate Atlantic rainforest, which descends steeply to the burn. Extensive local wildlife on and around the property. Animals including Roe and Sika Deer, Hare and Pine Marten; birds such as Woodcock, Tawny Owl, Cuckoo, Tree Pipit, Wood Warbler, Scottish Crossbill, Goldcrest and Siskin, can be seen at different times of the year.

“What a wonderful stay!”

“Wonderful, just Wonderful.”

Reviewed 24 Aug 2020

We opened the gate to the property and drived up the track leading to Coille Diobhain. We could not beleive that this cottage would be our home for the next 7 days. We were a party of 6, everyone looked at me and said, Well done Gary, great choice. The setting is just out of this world. The cottage inside, also has everything we could of wished for. Modern, clean, had every thing needed for a home from home holiday. Days were spent out and about, walking, mountain climbing, bikes, kayaks, coast walks. The cottage is the ideal base for many places and things to do around the area. We catered for ourselves all week. We had breakfast, made packed lunches, came back for supper, had a bbq. Really did not want to spend any night away from the cottage. After supper we would sit and play games, watch films or just retire to the comfy beds to rest for the next day, so we could do it all all over again. We have fallen in love with Scotland and have also fallen for the cottage. The owner helped us out on a question I had, calling me straight back after a very early text from myself. Ruaridh is a true gent and always answers emails, texts, and nothing is too much trouble. Thank You once again Ruaridh.

“Beautiful place to stay”

Reviewed 30 Aug 2019

We loved Coille Diobhain! The house is fantastic, plenty of space and nicely decorated while very homely. Great views from the living room and from the grounds. Beautiful setting, very peaceful and tranquil but not too far from a main road and town (Fort William). A wonderful place to relax. The grounds include a very pretty wood at the front, a big grass area with a small pine wood at the back, through which you can get into the fields for a walk. We were particularly pleased to discover a football goal in the garden and a football to use. Other things we hadn't expected that were really useful - extra TVs in dining room and downstairs bedroom, OS maps of the local area, useful kitchen bits such as clingfilm, oil, salt etc. Lovely welcome pack with milk, biscuits and coffee. Towels were lovely, beds and bed linen comfy. (Worth noting though bring tea-towels and dishcloth) Nice clean property. We loved the area and had a brilliant day out at the Nevis Range, the gondolas (cable cars) are really worth doing - and lovely views and cafe at the top. There's no need to book online, no cheaper. There's a nice walk or two up there too. We enjoyed visiting the West Coast (Camusdarach beach beautiful), Glenfinnan viaduct (busy though!) and cycling the beautiful route along the Caledonian Canal from Fort Augustus (Ness E Bikes in Fort Augustus very helpful. We hired a mix of normal and electric assisted bikes - they were fantastic!) Enjoyed the view and a drink by Loch Ness in the garden of the Boathouse Lochside Restaurant. And of course worth a drive and walk along Glen Roy. Needed more time - lots to do and see. We found communication with Ruaridh very good, he was very helpful and quick to respond. Many thanks for a wonderful holiday!

“A fantastic cottage”

Reviewed 9 Jun 2019

This cottage had everything we needed for 6 people. It was spacious, well equipped and very peaceful. The welcome pack was much appreciated as we needed a cuppa before we went to the supermarket :-). There are lots of interesting places not too far away, such as distilleries, Urquhart Castle, Fort Augustus and Pitlochry. There are lovely walks close by but Fort William is only a short drive away, so we managed to go up Ben Nevis. What a bonus! I would highly recommend this cottage for a family or group. The owner can easily be contacted and is very helpful. We miss it already. Superb!

“Well-equipped cottage in stunning location”

Stunning views of Ben Nevis from this well-equipped holiday home! It has a remote feel with plenty of wildlife on the doorstep but with amenities of Fort William within easy reach. It has a massive tv with good reception for those who can bear to turn their backs on the view of the mountains. Wifi and mobile connection proved reliable Particularly recommend the train journey to Mallaig and the walks up Glen Nevis.

“Perfect secluded location”

Reviewed 13 Apr 2019

Great holiday rental which suited our family of 6, the property is set back from the road set within lovely woodland gardens. The ground floor offers a double room, a room with bunk beds, nice dining area, stunning lounge with large windows, great sofa and large TV, small but well equipped kitchen. Upstairs there are two further bedrooms one with a double and the other twin beds, family shower room, the shower is very slow but nice and warm, whereas the shower downstairs was much more powerful but ran out of hot water very quickly. The property was ideally placed for where we wanted to visit this time and we would highly recommend.

“Excellent Property and Location”

Reviewed 3 Sep 2018

This property is excellent in all aspects and we cannot recommend it enough. It is well furnished and has everything one might need for a stay whatever the weather. There is good supply of dried wood for the log burner with views out of the windows of the Ben Nevis range breathtaking. The location is also excellent although in winter weather access could prove a challenge due to it's remoteness. However access into Fort William and beyond would be equally challenging. I'd highly recommend investigating the local history with regards to the war time exploits of the Commando training center with visits to the memorial and museum. Access to the Ben Nevis range is perfect with Glencoe within easy reach. I'll definitely be returning.
