About Brisbane
Best known as “the river city” of Australia, Brisbane is a popular tourist destination with a lot to get excited about.
It serves as a gateway to the state of Queensland, often visited by those travelling to resort locations like the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast.
Many who plan on “passing through” find that each area has its own charming character and lengthen their stay to make the most of the array of galleries, parks, beaches, bars and bands there are to enjoy. Others promise to return once they see just how relaxed and content both vacationers and the locals are!
Brisbane is known for its cultural and sporting events. In 1982, the city was host to the Commonwealth Games. Since then, the city has hosted the World Expo ’88, the final Goodwill Games in 2001 and most recently, the 2014 G-20 summit.
What to do in Brisbane
The number one must-see sight in Brisbane is Queensland Cultural Centre, located on South Bank and surrounded by subtopic gardens. The nearby spread of interesting architecture, including the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, the Gallery of Modern Art and the State Library, is truly awe-inspiring. Lap it up before moving on to the next port of call, City Hall.
City Hall is a significant landmark in Central Brisbane. Built between 1920 and 1930, the sandstone behemoth still stands tall, fronted by its original row of sequoia-sized Corinthian columns. Inside, the foyer is finished with marble, sourced from the same Tuscan quarry that Michelangelo used to sculpt David.
Music gigs and art performances take place in the building’s auditorium regularly, with free concerts held each Tuesday afternoon. There are also free tours of the 85m-tall clock tower, which run every 15 minutes. You can snatch up some tickets from the on-site Museum of Brisbane.

Getting around couldn’t be easier in Brisbane, especially if you’re in the heart of CBD (The Brisbane Central Business District). There are all forms of transport available to visitors – public and private. You can rent a car, book a taxi or take the bus, rail or ferry services. This extensive network means that all areas are well connected to regional centers, interstate and overseas destinations.
The high-speed ferry service, CityCat is an awesome (and impressive) way to get around. It goes between Brisbane River, the University of Queensland and Apollo Road but is used by travelers and commuters alike so expect the occasional wait!
Whether you’re looking to relocate for the job or your dreams, check out the city with friends or simply stay for a family vacation, Brisbane is bound to make for an unforgettable time. It’s a destination that really has it all.
