Description from owner

Description

A delightful 3 bedroomed character house set within its own private courtyard. The property is situated in Villenueve Minervois, an authentic village typical of the region with its shady boulevards, plane trees and two very good restaurants. The property is ideal if you enjoy all things local and a sense of independence; from markets, wine tasting and local delicacies to mountain walks and trips to relatively undiscovered remote villages. However, it will also suit those who require a more focused stay as well-know attractions such as Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi are within a short drive. The property offers a cool haven in the summer and off-season the fantastic wood burning stove and effective central heating system ensures a warm and cosy stay all year round. It provides the perfect base to enjoy a multitude of activities from walking in the nearby hills and mountains to joining the locals celebrating Bastille Day or visiting the enchanting market in Carcassonne at Christmas time. The spacious and elegant bedrooms, arranged as two doubles and one twin, sleep six comfortably. The very high standard of decoration internally is complemented by the picture postcard setting of the house within its own walled private courtyard and bbq area. A perfect setting any time of year.

There are so many places to visit in the area that one week may not be enough!

Within the village there are two very good restaurants (one an auberge serving local dishes and the other which is a more suited to fine dining). Other amenities include a boulangerie, butchers and small Spar shop. There is also a chemist and post office. The village is famous for "la Truffe" and in the winter colourful markets are organised to celebrate (and sell) all things related. You can visit the local museum, Maison de la Truffe (Truffle House) within the village all-year-round. Also dont miss out on a visit to le Moulin (a working windmill) which is a 15 minute stroll from the house.

In the surrounding area the numerous areas of historic, scenic and cultural interest are easily reached by car. There are the famous Cathar fortresses of Chateaux de Lastours and Queribus. However, the biggest attraction in the area is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Carcassonne. Carcassonne is the largest walled city in Europe, the fascinating 'La Cite', where at least in the story, the heroic chatelaine defied the siege of Charlemagne. Despite its fairy tale appearance, Carcassonne has all of the conveniences of a modern city. And let's not forget the other UNESCO World Heritage site, the magical Canal du Midi which is only 10 minutes from the property.

To cool down in the summer there are lakeside beaches and a forestry acrobatic park at Lac de Lay Cavayere. Both popular with families. If you fancy visiting some of the caves for which the region is well-known, head for the Grotte de Limousis or Cabrespine. For those that don't mind a longer drive there is a wonderful tourist train Rivesaltes to Axat which takes you through dramatic and beautiful mountain scenery.

For the more adventurous there are lots of activities such as gorge walking, whitewater rafting and kayaking.

The village of Caunes Minervois, famous for its red marble and Benedictine abbey, is less than 15 minutes drive away, where there is a wider selection of shops and dining options.

“Lovely village house”

Reviewed 12 Sep 2021

Well equipped house with a cosy feel and lovely private courtyard. Streets around house are very narrow and no parking on site but plenty of parking within a 50m radius. Local restaurants are good but check opening times! Bakers, local Spar close by too.

“Charming house in a lovely small French village”

Reviewed 23 Jul 2018

The house is a terraced refurbished 3 story building which has had a lot of care and attention put into it by Rolland and Andrea. Plenty of storage space, well equipped kitchen and lovely area outside to relax and listen to the swallows overhead. Situated right in the middle of the village with an easy stroll in the morning to the boulangerie and local spar shop. Local restaurant La Table Du Pareur is a must, for some excellent French cuisine, sit outside in the company of the owners 2 friendly cats. Ideal area for the early morning 5k walk, country roads very quite, just the odd farmer tending to his vines. Day trips to the castle in Carcassonne, Olanzac for the market on Tuesday, Minerve...lovely little twisty town in the hills, with a big bridge over the gorge.....try the chocolate cafe for great bruschetta and nice chocky bits with your coffee...very friendly owner....also nice arty shops in the town. And of course the best bit is that you are right in the middle of one of the best wine areas of France.....stick to buying bottles with the Minervois label and you won't go wrong, some lovely 13/14% reds...all under 10 euro. A super time had by all. Thank you Rolland and Andrea for the use of your beautiful French retreat
