Description

La Petite Grange is attached to the last house as you leave the small hamlet, and looks out on to open fields down to the stream and up again to the hills beyond. It is on the border between the Hautes-Pyrénées and the Gers and is an idyllic peaceful getaway for couples, a place to relax and unwind and get away from everyday stresses.

There are many beautiful walks that can be made from the house, some with views of the Pyrénées, and you may see deer, foxes, hare, coypu, badgers, hedgehogs... even wild boar! Or you could just lie back and watch the buzzards and kites as they circle the valley, and listen to the woodpecker and the cuckoos. You can also fish in the lake, 5 min walk away, without a permit.

The hamlet has a church and a mairie, and it is 10km to the nearest small supermarket in Rabastens-de-Bigorre, where there is also a small market every Monday. At 14km is Trie-sur-Baïse, founded in1323 and 'France's biggest pig market', where on Tuesdays you can sit under the cloisters with a drink and watch the large market unfold. The 12th century Abbey at St-Sever-de-Rustan is 5km away, a lovely spot for a picnic on the bank of the slow-flowing river Arros.

The third window faces east over the fields. The downstairs area is open-plan and has a log-burning stove - logs provided free of charge. There are books and a DVD library available, iPod dock, games, French and UK television and a fully equipped kitchen.

Further details outdoors

As well as the upstairs balcony, there is seating outside the cottage under a parasol, also in the open barn there is a table for alfresco meals and a 'plancha' gas-fired grill. There are 4 sun-loungers for relaxing on under the walnut trees. The garden is mainly grass, with a vegetable plot at the back to which visitors are welcome to help themselves in season, and hens in an enclosure - eggs available when they feel like it! “Absolutely Stunning”

Reviewed 5 Sep 2016

A truly amazing gite in a secluded location- absolute peace and quiet with no major towns nearby and very little traffic. We both had a great time out there for a week, seeing the sights and walking. … More

“Super, great, fantastic”

Reviewed 27 Jul 2012

This is a wondeful gite, set in glorious rural surroundings, run by very helpful and friendly hosts. Shopping in local towns is a pleasure, as is the vast array of food available in local restaurants. There are plenty of local attractions and walks to suit all tastes, so there is always something different to do each day if you can tear yourselves away from the garden. We stayed here to indulge our passion for cycling and watched three stages of the Tour de France, all within 50 minutes drive. Even though we were setting off for the mountains very early each morning we got incredible support from Nick and Lavinia, who we may even have converted into cycling fans. If you are bringing your bike there are some lovely, quiet lanes to explore and depending on your level of fitness some superb local climbs to challenge you. Our first time in this area of France has been one to relish - we will be back.

“Home from Home in rural France”

Reviewed 5 Jul 2012

We have just returned from a most wonderful relaxing week. Our hosts could not have been more welcoming, making us feel at home right away. The Gites accommodation is to a very high standard, whilst still retaining many interesting characteristics and is positioned on a quiet road in a peaceful valley with beautiful views. The nearby medieval towns provide plenty of opportunity to explore and the Pyrenees are also within easy driving distance offering a different landscape to discover.

“If you're looking for peace and tranquillity, this is definitely the place”

Reviewed 27 Oct 2011

Very comfortable well-appointed accommodation with charming and helpful hosts. The beautiful surroundings afford plenty of relaxing walks through field and forest, if walking is to your taste. You do need a car as this really is rural France. Wonderful medieval towns are within easy driving distance where restaurants are good and the food is plentiful and affordable. Loved it!
