Description from owner
Description
Nestled in the farmland beneath the Slieve Bloom Mountains and located 3 miles from the market town of Mountrath and 5 miles from the heritage town of Abbeyleix and within 1 hour of Dublin city, this traditional thatch cottage which has been estimated to date back to around 1600 makes the perfect cottage holiday location. This unique cottage has recently been lovingly restored but not at the expense of it's original features and character. It retains a traditional Irish fireplace with beams in the lounge, exposed hand cut bog oak beams to the ceiling in the living room and in the oldest bedroom. Light filters in through the little sash windows (which need to be propped open), and the low doors leading off the living room gives a hint to the cottages true age. There are wonderfully uneven walls with nooks and crannies, wall lanterns and traditional light fittings all blending in with modern conveniences which include free Wifi internet access. This cottage really has the WOW factor! The cottage sits in a very private location with a well kept garden surrounded by farmland and woodland. It is ideally located for exploring the local Slieve Bloom Mountains, with it's beautiful surroundings and walking trails. The Glenbarrow Waterfall Trail is a must and there are many other walking trails to explore. There are other activities such as horseriding, golf, and fishing available in the local area. Check out the guest handbook on the coffee table for information.Because of it's central location and easy access to the main road network the cottage can also be the perfect base for exploring all over Ireland. All the main cities....Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, are all within easy reach! So you can kiss the Blarney Stone, be amazed by the views from the Cliffs of Moher, enjoy a visit to Bunratty Castle & Folk park, go horse racing at the Curragh, visit the Guinness Brewery and explore Dublin's fair city and much more, all in one great holiday!Don't forget to relax, have a pint and soak up the old world atmosphere in Morrissey's of Abbeyleix (just down the road), voted one of Ireland's top 10 pubs! The cottage accommodation comprises GF: lounge, kitchen/diner, utility room, 2 double rooms, 1 twin room, bathroom with shower over bath.Electricity and oil central heating included, linen and towels included. Wifi included. No hidden extras!38inch Flat screen TV with UK TV channels, dvd player, CD player, fridge/freezer, Rangemaster cooker (gas hob/electric ovens), microwave, dishwasher, w/machine, internet access, hairdryer, welcome pack, partially enclosed garden, patio area, garden furniture, private drive with parking for several cars. Sorry no pets. No Smoking please. The cottage comes provided with dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, washing powder/gel, cooking oil, salt, pepper, tea bags, instant coffee, sugar and T-towels, just to make settling in that little bit easier. We also pop a pint of milk in the fridge and in the colder months provide a starter pack for the turf stove.Extra Details...~ There is a pond and old feature well in the garden so the cottage is not suitable for young children (no children under the age of 10 please) The doors leading from the lounge are very low and not standard height (which is part of the character of the cottage) so if you are tall, please mind your head! ~ There are steps both inside and outside of the property, which may present a problem for people with limited mobility.

“Fabulous Setting”
An absolutely fabulous cottage nestled in a lovely rural setting yet only a few km's from all amenities and services. Very clean and well maintained. The cottage itself has kept all of its traditional character while at the same time having all modern appliances as well. The rugged walls, fireplace and thatched roof are testament to this traditional nature. The owner left no stone unturned in decorating the cottage and these features also add to it's character, feel and experience. An ideal place to relax and chill out and you will be taken away from the hustle and bustle of modern day to day life. An ideal location too for travelling on day trips given its central location and anyone wanting to explore any corner of Ireland are ideally located here. A thoroughly enjoyable experience and highly recommended!

Response from the owner Hi Januet, Thank you for the 4 bubble review. Yes, the cottage is located in the countryside, which gives it unenviable privacy. And the local town is only 3 miles drive away but maybe that is too far for some. But I do try and make this plain in the description so guests know what to expect on arrival. I'm sorry to hear you had a problem with bedding. You should have mentioned this during your stay and give us the opportunity to do something about it. I'm not sure which bedding/matterss you refer to. The bed in the dairy room is brand new this season. I've slept on this myself and it's very comfortable. The bed in the red room is only a few years old and the matterss was changed last year. Again I've had freinds and many guests sleep in both rooms and everyone had a good nights sleep. The twin room beds are the least slept in beds (and usually children) and I've not had any complaints about those either. So not really sure why your comment says the there is a big problem on bedding. Maybe you and your family prefer a very soft mattress. Hope the rest of you stay was enjoyable. Best wishes Dee.
