Description from owner

Description

Maison Beaufort is a beautifully restored 19th century village house surrounded by the vineyards of the famed Minervois wine region in the south of France. This two storey home has been lovingly renovated by four Canadian friends who carefully maintained its original character and its connection to the inspiring landscape. Maison Beaufort is now available for you to rent as a holiday home throughout the year.

Holidaying in a small village is the best way to experience France the way the French do. We line up with our neighbours to buy bread in the morning; after dinner we walk the same country paths they do; we watch them working in the vineyards; we wave to them as they come back home for lunch; we visit them for wine tasting; we shop with them at their local market.

Most houses in villages in the south of France are attached to each other, a great feature when the inhabitants needed protection from invading armies or from the heat of the sun. Our house sits alone on a large property, though, very private but open to the sun - better for holidays. The house is only a few feet from a 12th century chateau, a designated heritage site that dominates Beaufort and ensures that the village will retain its historic character.

Close by, the Canal du Midi offers daily boat tours; there is wine tasting at neighbourhood vineyards and wineries; the castles of the Cathars offer hiking and climbing destinations: the Mediterranean beaches are 40 minutes away at Narbonne; there are prehistoric cave drawings at Niaux; Roman ruins and earlier relics can be found within minutes of the house.

Four of us, friends who love France, bought and renovated this lovely home in 2003. We spend several weeks each year at Maison Beaufort with our own families but it's a great pleasure to share the house with others who want to experience life in a French village.

The house was in rough shape when we bought it but two of us are interior designers and we managed to oversee the renovations from Canada when we couldn't be there ourselves. We wanted the house to be all we imagined a French village house should be, so we decorated in soft Mediterranean colours and styles, keeping it simple but pretty, and as comfortable as possible. Establishing a garden was important, too, and we didn't know how fortunate we are to have such a spacious, sunny and private one. We don't have the room or the climate at home for the fruit trees, the giant fig tree, the almond trees, palms and bamboo we've planted in our French garden, so exciting! Most of all, we're very lucky to have found a housekeeper who takes care of the property as if it were her own, greeting each new visitor for us and making sure their stay is all they anticipated.

So many wonderful holiday essentials come together in this part of France - beautiful scenery, great food, amazing wines, friendly people, thousands of years of history, a variety of cultures, colourful markets, delightful towns and villages, easy travel and all kinds of shopping. We never tire of exploring the neighbourhood but the largest walled city in Europe, Carcassonne, is just 30 minutes away and the nearby Autoroute takes us to Barcelona in 2 hours. Even the TGV stops in Narbonne, which means Paris is just a 4 1/2 hour train trip away. Most of all, though, 320 days of sunshine every year means it's a perfect place to visit any time.

Getting around

Sightseeing is best done by car for the most versatility. The area is a mecca for cyclists, though, and the Tour de France goes through our neighbourhood almost every year. Good bicycles can be rented, we'll give you that information, and cycling a wonderful way to explore the Minervois. La Grande Randonee, a walking trail that connects all of France, also crosses through the region and walking around Beaufort is very satsifying. There is a circle route behind the church in the village, so be sure to look for that.

Interaction with guest

Sharing the house has been a great experience and it's important to us that you enjoy your holiday at Beaufort. We know the area well now and have lots of information about what to do, where to go, where to eat and how to make the most of our beautiful neighbourhood. We'll be happy to help you plan your stay and then our housekeeper, who is English and lives nearby in the village, will be available to help while you're at the house. Gerry will greet you when you arrive to show you around the house, but you must ask her also about her wine and history tours. They will be a highlight of your week.
