“Peaceful retreat”

Reviewed 1 Jan 2014

We had a wonderful stay over Christmas at this beautiful, peaceful retreat. The gite is spacious and well equipped, the area is beautiful and unspoilt and Hanneke and Tony are kind, generous and lovely hosts. It is a perfect location to do as much or as little as you wish: some days we stayed in and played games by the fire, at other times we went for drives and enjoyed the beautiful villages in the area (I would highly recommend a visit to Conques.) Mur de Barrez itself is unspoilt by tourism and the local people were very friendly. Les Secrets des Bonheur is the perfect place to unwind and discover this lovely corner of rural France and was perfect for our Christmas vacation. Thank you Hanneke and Tony!

Response from the owner Thank you Zalini, Curt and Elisabeth. It was lovely having you here over Christmas. So glad you enjoyed it. Hope to see you again in the near future. Happy new year!

“Fantastic holidays”

Reviewed 21 Aug 2013

We spent fantastic holidays in Carladez (the name of this country). We hiked a lot and saw beautiful landscapes, visited castles, swom in lakes, fished truits, met lots of very kind and authentic people. The barn was beautiful, modern but with the charm of th eold time, cosy and large and very comfortable. All the family (my wife and my 4 kids were very happy in Mur de Barrez. Moreover, our owners were so kind and very helpful. If you like hiking in the country or if you do not (you could spend your time admiring th elandscape from the terrasse. I am sure you will find the bonheur in Mur de Barrez. Be careful because you will need lots of strengh to leave this country and this beautiful barn.

Amicalement, Hanneke & Tony

“Paradise in The aveyron”

Reviewed 22 Jul 2013

I have just had the most glorious week in this piece of Paradise. And paradise not only describes the feeling of tranquility one gets here but also the atmosphere created by the hosts Hanneke and Tony Herbert.I have never been made to feel more welcome on holiday than when I was greeted upon my arrival. If you are fortunate enough to be given specially home made pizzas as a welcome you are in for a sublime treat. Hanneke and Tony are on hand to guide you to the best that the region has to offer, and that is a lot, and they are also there to help in any situation but like the perfect hosts that they are they also stay in the background and let you chill. There is a special feeling to this place, surrounded by rolling hills, you feel as if are being protected by the landscape and cared for as you gradually unwind The accommodation is like a 5 star hotel, on one level there's a spacious lounge area with an adjoining luxury kitchen and all this is framed by a wonderful view which can be enjoyed from a hanging balcony. The bedrooms and ensuite are just what you would expect from a 5 star hotel. There is so much to do in the area, I chose canoeing down the river Lot, an adventure I would highly recommend, a trip to the mountains, and visited the medieval village of Conques, (a must see). One special experience was dinner at www.aberge-des-montagnes.com. A menu to die for. There is absolutely nothing to fault in this home away from home, I am already looking at when I can return, this year. I am told the skiiing in the mountains, only 45 minutes away is fist class.

Response from the owner Thank you so much Peter. We are both really pleased that the countryside around Marcillac has worked its magic on you and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

“A Wonderful Place to Stay”

Reviewed 17 Oct 2012

We have stayed at Les Secrets du Bonheur four times, and each one has been better than lhe last. The gite is superbly presented, and contains all the amenities required for a comfortable stay. The immediate surroundings are beautiful and peaceful, a description which applies to the entire area. Mur de Barrez houses an excellent baker and a prize-winning charcuterie, and is a delightful town in which to shop. Further away, Aurillac also offers similar facilities. There's nothing we don't like about it!

Response from the owner Hi Geoff and Angela. You're great guests to have as you share the love we have for this area. The proof is in the pudding: returning guests like you are very valuable to us. Thanks for your comments and your ratings. See you next time.

“Luxury house in wonderful part of rural France”

Reviewed 18 Sep 2012

This is the 2nd time I've stayed at Les Secrets du Bonheur, with my partner and our 6 year old daughter, and it was just as good as the first. We went with some friends - another family for one week, and a single man for the 2nd. Tony and Hanneke have done a fantastic job of renovating the old barn into a 3 storey house with 3 bedrooms. The fixtures throughout are great - modern and luxurious, and features like the wetroom in the main en-suite, the wooden flooring throughout, the great 1st floor balcony, and the excellent kitchen means it rivals a 5 star hotel for quality. The area is excellent and include outdoors pursuits, with great bike rides (there are a couple of bikes in the utility room if you want to use them), runs and walks from the house. A swimming lake is about 30 minutes away, a pool about 10. There is horseriding just beyond Mur-de-Barrez and loads of watersports like canoing etc in the many rivers and lakes nearby. If you venture further, into the Lot Valley, just a short drive south, or the Cantal mountains, about 45 minutes north, the scenery gets more dramatic, but around the house and Mur de Barrez, it is beautiful - with pretty rivers and hills. It reminds me a bit of the lovely part of Yorkshire we live in. Every town or village you drive through feels like a real find, with the Medieval pilgrim town of Conques being a must-see. What I really love about the holidays we've had there is that although it is relatively undiscovered, by foreigners, a lot of French people take holidays there. This means that it's not too busy, and all the places you visit feel like they are actually rural France, not just approximations laid on for gullible tourists! But there are great places to eat, and loads to do. Tony and Hanneke once more made our stay a real joy - they are so helpful and welcoming, and make suggestions for things to do, places to eat, and even local festivals happening which you may like. Can't wait to go back next year!

“verblijf in Les Secrets du Bonheur, Mur de Barrez.”

Reviewed 12 Sep 2012

“Enjoy aveyron in very nice house”

Reviewed 1 Sep 2012

We had a marvelous stay in this house. The way it has been renovated is fantastic and the house has all services and commodities. It is in a calm and nice place. You can relax, read a good book with a glass of wine or simply admire the landscape from the terrace and dream. Hanneke and Tony are really nice persons. They can help you if you want a good restaurant, visit a nice place,... or simply let you organize tour stay if this is what you want. A pity that we stayed only one week !

Response from the owner Thank you so much for your lovely comments. Did not realise you spoke such brilliant English! It would be lovely to see you both again at some point in the near future. You have been a pleasure to have as 'neighbours'.

“Comfort and peace in undiscovered rural France”

Reviewed 2 Aug 2012

One of the best gites we've ever stayed in! A sympathetically converted barn with thick stone walls and wooden beams but equipped with a sleek modern kitchen and great bathrooms. The'wow' factor -an amazing view across the valley. We drank it in each morning with tea in bed and each evening with wine on the terrace! The only sound is the donkeys in the field below and the cowbells up the valley. The gite feels very spacious and has lots of sofas so you can gather sociably or find a quiet corner to chill out with a book or an iPod. Comfortable beds, powerful showers and good bedlinen add to the sense of well-being. There's even a thoughtful choice of feather or hypoallergenic pillows. Ensuite bathrooms were relished by all! Tony and Hanneke live next door and are delightful - genuine friendly people who, without appearing to, work very hard to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. They welcomed us with drinks and delicious saussicon, booked a court with 'Denis the Tennis' and recommended a dirt-bike track that our teenage son is still raving about! Mur de Barrez is about 10 mins away - great charcuterie, boucherie and cafes plus a Spar and a Carrefour. The gite is well located on the borders of the Cantal and aveyron for a wide range of activities. With 2 teenagers we went kayaking, mountain walking, river swimming in the Lot (buy Daniel Start's book 'Wild Swimming in France' for locations!),lake swimming, and of course, dirt-biking! The scenery is magnificent whichever direction you take. We loved it- the peace and comfort of the gite, the choice of activities, the lack of British tourists (!)Forced to identify a downside, all I think of is the choice of local restaurants is not huge. That said,we had some great meals and I'm sure there are some slightly further afield - we were happy to stay in with the view, a bottle of wine and the best from the local traiteur! Can't wait to go back!

Response from the owner Hi Penny, Philip, Phoebe and Tom. We bask in the glory you bestow on us! But more than that we are so very pleased that you have enjoyed your stay with us. You guys have certainly been a pleasure to have around and we'd love to see you again at some point in the future. Many thanks for your lovely comments. Hanneke & Tony

“prachtige comfortabele gite in mur de barrez”

Reviewed 17 Jul 2012

“Really shouldn't be a secret!!”

Reviewed 27 Mar 2012

A very attractive, comfortable and well equipped gite, with charming and helpful hosts living next door. I had the best of weather, which meant I could go ski-ing on Monday and sunbathe on Tuesday. The ski resort is within an hours drive with a wide range of activities at reasonable prices. I enjoy walking as well, and there are plenty of options available, including door to door from the gite. If you want to relax and kick back, no problem, enjoy the comfort of the house, cook up a storm or go out for a meal. In between ski-ing and walking I enjoyed sitting on the balcony drinking in the view, watching the abundant bird life and being amused by the antics of the donkeys next door. Top that off with an evening relaxing in front of the wood burning stove, before heading off to a comfy bed and a peaceful night, my idea of bliss. Oh, and don't forget to admire the night sky, on a clear night it is spectacular. It's a beautiful corner of the world and this is an ideal place from which to explore it. This is our second visit and I'm sure there will be a third.

Response from the owner Thank you Anne! Picasso misses you already. A tres bientot.
