“Sophisticated countryside property”

Reviewed 31 Oct 2013

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautifully renovated property. Located south of Brive, with easy access to numerous sites and villages in the Dordogne valley. Wonderful as a base for touring the countryside, but a most comfortable location to simply relax and enjoy the property. Unforgettable.

“A five-star authentic French countryside experience”

The rustic-chic charm of Le Moulin de Malecoste means one is hard-pressed to leave. Rambling roses climb the stone walls of the converted barn, wisteria clings to the heavy wooden door frame and the sound of the water stream running through the centuries-old mill drowns out any possible sound of civilisation. We stayed in Rouge - the biggest of three gites, simply entitled Rouge, Blanc and Bleu. No (luxurious) detail was forgotten at Rouge, from the full French-style kitchen from which to prepare the many gourmet foodie finds we stumbled across in the neighbouring villages, to the torches and umbrellas left out should we experience anything from a power outage to a shower, to the gas Weber outside for barbecues and dining al fresco. With two beautifully-appointed bedrooms, three bathrooms and a lounge (with satellite TV), we were spoilt for choice. Our children adored being in a bedroom almost up in the roof! Nestled in the Dordogne valley, neatly placed between the villages of Martel, Cazillac and L'hopital St Jean, our stay at Le Moulin de Malecoste was simply glorious. And what we particularly loved was that it was as enjoyable staying in and enjoying the garden and our home base, as it was exploring the surrounding Medieval villages and rolling countryside. We visited many festivals and food markets during our stay and with the Dordogne River being only a 15-minute drive away, spent many happy days swimming, canoeing, kayaking and fishing too.

“A pleasant comfortable stay in the country”

The property is wonderfully maintained with appropriate modern appliances that do not detract from the charm and warmth or coolness, depending on the season, of this renovated stone mill.

“Our stay at Le Moulin de Malecoste”

We spent a week at Le Moulin in the smaller of the 2 gites - Blanc. It was everything we hoped for - the description and photos provided on the website were accurate. Heather did an outstanding job of renovating the inside of the gite. It was very tastefully decorated and comfortable. We really enjoyed staying at a 500 year old water mill that had all the amenities you need today. We were met by Fiona who looks after the property and is Heather's partner. The gite was very clean and well maintained. Fiona ensured we had everything we needed and was available by phone if we had any questions. We really appreciated the extra goodies you left for us - thanks so much, Fiona. The information binder was really useful - it contained details about neighbouring villages as well as recommended restaurants and we often referred to it. We travelled around many small villages during the day and enjoyed our evenings at the mill. It was very relaxing to sit on the patio with a glass of wine and listen to the water running through the property. Our favourite places included Turenne, Collonges-La-Rouge, Loubressac, St. Cere, Martel, Rocamadour, Monpazier, Domme, La Roque-Gageac, Les Jardins de Marqueyssac, Beynac and Castelnaud. We would definitely recommend this property.

“Charmingly restored and comfortable”

All aspects of the welcome well attended to,including "starter"groceries requested.Very comfortably appointed with all modern conveniences. The setting is unique being above the water course of an old water driven mill.Vehicle parking is less generous than perhaps some might be used to,but adequate. Well located to drive to local villages, but having a car at your disposal a must.Located on a quiet road so being away from it all,and in a rural setting ,the flavour

“A beautiful, immaculate and very restful place that completely s”

The Moulin de Malacoste is a very special place. Set in beautfiul rolling countryside, with miles of great walking, and a simply exquisite attention to detail both inside and out. We came to rest in a peaceful place, and we did, deeply, and with a warm welcome. The facilities are immaculate, the finishing materials and attention detail in the Gite Blanc are superb. We could not have been more satisfied. Simply, if you can, go...and enjoy!

“The location is perfect for exploring the area.”

Reviewed 28 Oct 2012

The service was excellent, their knowledge of the area was very good and very friendly and spoke English. Our Gite Blanc was home from home very well decorated and comfortable. Very well located for exploring the area, many villages not more than 40 mins away and wonderful food markets which they informed you about in there notes. Maybe the only pleasant addition in the height of summer would be a pool. Outside area for having a barbeque is divine.

“A wonderful countryside escape”

My partner found this on the internet and we liked the pictures in other reviews so we decided to book it. From the very start of the booking the owner (Heather) was a fantastic point of contact and we were sent plenty of information about our holiday. We arrived and were instantly very impressed by our Gite. The rooms were tastefullY decorated and nothing was missed, arriving on a Sunday we realised we wouldnt be able to find an open shop for something to eat but soon found that we had been left a welcome pack. The main moulin is a stunning building and is set in very peaceful grounds aLong a very quiet country road. The area is very rural and you will always need a car to be able to reach anywhere of significance but we found all the main tourist areas were within about 15-30 minutes. The on-site host (Fiona) is available throughout your stay as a point of contact in France and made us feel very welcome. Simply put this was a first class location and we will definitely be staying here again, you will not be dissappointed with any aspect of this as a holiday location.

“The best accommodation in southern France!”

Reviewed 7 Sep 2012

The service was world class! We were treated like family and nothing was too much effort. We thought the Gite was great, it had it all - beautiful kitchen, satellite TV, very comfortable with magnificent views - perfect. Our favourite aspect of our stay was the location (notwithstanding the accommodation), we were close to many beautiful and historic villages. There Was lots to do and visit.

“The most beautiful, charming accommodation in France!”

Reviewed 30 Aug 2012

We stayed in Blanc for a week and didn't want to leave at the end. The accommodation was beautifully decorated, perfectly clean, and had every amenity we could have asked for. We wont go back to any other place in the south of France other than Blanc. The location couldn't have been better-it is perfectly located and a short drive to stunning villages which we explored daily. There is lots of information provided in the apartment so our trips were planned on the day-trips to markets to buy fresh produce which we cooked in our kitchen, paddling down the river, exploring local churches, and going to picturesque restaurants. We also relaxed at the apartment, sitting under the trees, reading and drinking wine- everything I could have asked for. The apartment is a beautiful, renovated classic stone apartment so is wonderfully cool in the summer and I would imagine warm in the winter, with a big fireplace in the lounge. I could not recommend this apartment enough and am dying to go back soon!!
