On the very highest spot of the Caldera rim, on Malteza square in Imerovigli, stands this patrician mansion from the mid 19th century.
The village of Imerovigli, perched more than 300 metres above the Aegean Sea, is widely recognised as the most exclusive location on Santorini and a favourite among seasoned travellers. Sheltered from the bustling crowds elsewhere on the island, Imerovigli captures the essence of what Santorini is all about – serenity, tranquillity and a surreal panorama.
This luxury villa has been meticulously refurbished by its architect owner to create a minimalist and contemporary home whilst maintaining the elements and spirit of its original architecture.
The house is characterized by the soft and changing Aegean light pouring in through its numerous French doors and large bay windows creating an ethereal atmosphere throughout. The openings form a spatial and visual connectivity between the villa’s inside and outside allowing sea views from almost all rooms.
The materials, furnishings and appliances of the house have been carefully chosen and designed. The decoration relies on subtle differences in natural texture – sand stone, blond oak, woven sisal and white linen.
The core of the villa is composed by the spacious and stylish living and dining room area. The living room with its imposing cross-vaulted ceiling has been furnished in a sleek and modern manner in order to create absolute comfort whereas the focus of the dining room is the unique and seemingly endless oak table equally suited to dining, leisure and work.
To the en-suite double bedroom on the upper floor leads a sculptural wooden staircase. This bedroom has a private balcony with stunning views of the Aegean Sea connecting the suite with the outdoor terraces. On the ground floor there is a second double bedroom also with sea view and separate bathroom. The twin bedroom is located in the wing of the house and also has its own bathroom. The bathrooms display linear forms and purity of material incorporating exclusive fittings and fixtures.
The modern kitchen combines clean lines with maximum functionality. It has views both to the garden and the sea and is connected to the airy and welcoming breakfast lounge with direct access to the courtyard.
The south facing courtyard is an oasis in its own right with olive trees and bougainvilleas encircling the inviting swimming pool. This space provides ample opportunities for both relaxing by the pool and entertaining by the generous and sun-sheltered garden table.
From the courtyard, stone steps lead to the mansion’s roof terraces offering unparalleled 360 degree views of the island and the surrounding Cycladic archipelago. At sunset, the terrace lounge area provides an ideal setting for the aperitivo hour - before hitting the local night scene.

Response from the owner I would like to make a few clarifications to this review. The villa is not hard to find if you follow the detailed driving instructions given together with the arrival information. The villa is situated on the highest spot of Imerovigli next to Malteza Church which is the biggest church in the village. No other guest has ever struggled to find our villa. The guest signalled a smell from the ground floor bathroom and my wife together with one of our technical staff came to the villa within very short notice. They could not detect any smell whatsoever but recleaned the water outlet for good measure. No other guest has ever had any complaints about this before or after. The guest’s perception about our sewage system is completely erroneous and I don’t know what she bases this on. For security reasons we have different systems for the three bathrooms but they certainly all have back-flow preventers! The court yard pool is 4x3 metres. Our beds king size and in my opinion extremely comfortable and this is actually one of the points other guests tend to emphasize. The pillows are certainly not synthetic but filled with goose down and feather and purchased at Harrods in London. There are some 7-8 good or very good restaurants within 5 minutes’ walk of the villa and the closest ones are only 50 metres away. The closest grocery store is about 100 metres from the villa. There are no night clubs in Imerovigli which is one of the main attractions of this serene village. I had corresponded with the guest on several occasions during her stay to see that everything was alright and she never mentioned the above issues to me at the time.

Response from the owner I am not quite sure what the guest means with this bedroom being "musty". We haven't had any notifications from any other guests, nor have we ourselves experienced any problem of this kind. The house is being carefully maintained every year, with particular attention to humidity alerts. Unfortunately this was not mentioned from the guest while they were there. We have gone to great lengths to ensure that the villa is dry and humid-free. We have natural ventilation via the numerous (ca 25) windows and ventilation outlets and we have also a number of dehumidifiers for humid days to ensure this aim. Please note that this is a "proper" villa and not a cave house in which the humidity problem is often very acute. The only thing I can think of is that a temporary “mustiness” may have appeared, caused by wet towels/clothes left in the bedroom, with the windows closed and the dehumidifier turned off on a humid day. Humidity is a big problem on Santorini but Malteza House is probably better equipped than any other house on the island to counter this problem!
