Description from owner

Description

Christmas Cottage is a quaint, early 19th century, mill workers cottage situated in the beautiful village of Clifton on the edge of the Peak District. The accomodation is generous for 2 people and is arranged over 3 floors which retain many period features including beamed ceilings, quarry tiled floors and original fireplaces. Tastefully decorated in a contemporary style it is an ideal retreat for a romantic break, walking holiday, sightseeing or for relaxing and getting away from it all.

There are many lovely walks from the doorstep, along the river or via the lanes to other local villages and the historical Georgian market town of Ashbourne is about half a mile away along an easy path to it's excellent shops and facilities. A short, scenic car or bike ride will take you to all the local attractions including Dovedale, Carsington Water, Alton Towers, Sudbury Hall, the Tissington Trail and Kedleston Hall.

The terraced cottage is accessed from a small front garden which enjoys the sun throughout most of the day, as do most of the rooms. It is a nice place to sit with a glass of wine and watch the world go by. You enter from a small porch into the dining room with its large feature fireplace and original tiled floor adding to its charm and character, to the rear is the galley style kitchen with all the essentials you will require for your stay.

The original winding stairs (be careful as you go up both flights, they are steeper than modern staircases in keeping with the property - due to the stairs this property is not suitable for anyone who has limited mobility), lead to the first floor with the light, cosy lounge to the front, also on this floor is separate cloakroom with toilet and hand basin.

The second flight of stairs lead to the splendid, spacious bedroom, it has a vaulted painted beamed ceiling, a double bed and its own en suite bathroom with bath, with shower over, hand basin and toilet. Most rooms have views over the church and the village. Clifton is a pretty, peaceful village with a cricket pitch, children's play area and friendly country pub with beer garden within stumbling distance. Please note - due to the stairs this property is not suitable for anyone who has limited mobility. Parking is a very short walk away. Dogs are welcomed for a small charge and we ask that they stay on the lower two floors of the cottage. The garden fence is quite low so the garden is not secure for dogs but there are lots of lovely walks from the doorstep.

Getting around

It’s about 30 minutes pleasant walk into the centre of Ashbourne, along the pavement, so easy to have a meal and drink in town and walk back. Regular buses run from Ashbourne to Derby and Uttoxeter but the best of the countryside is ideally seen on foot. We recommend bringing a car to visit lots of the local attractions.

Interaction with guest

I always email my guests before their stay with directions, information about the cottage and lots of suggestions for their time here. I also send details regarding the keys which I leave the in the key safe at the cottage for you to collect. My family and I live locally and are always on hand to help or advise. We work hard to ensure our guests enjoy their stay and are happy to help in any way possible.

“Amazing place”

Reviewed 19 Apr 2021

Honestly this peace and quiet was great, local pub 2 doors away were really friendly and welcoming. Had a really nice time, the place was spotless and perfect for what we wanted. Will definitely be looking at this venue again when we are due to come back in October. We just didn’t get enough time to explore the area this time. Thank you so much Charlotte and Adam!
