Description from owner
Description
Longthwaite Farmhouse is a traditional, seventeenth century farmhouse with many of the original interior features retained and restored. Nestling in the beautiful Borrowdale valley, the heart of the Lake District, its front windows look out towards Watendlath Fell and its garden runs down to the River Derwent - with endless paddling, dam building and swimming opportunities along the river. Longthwaite is very much the simple family holiday home - we do not have a TV, Wi-Fi, freezer or dishwasher. The house's unique location makes it a perfect base for walkers and climbers as it offers immediate access by foot to the best loved Lakeland peaks: Scafell, Great Gable, the Langdale Pikes and Buttermere fells. Great on and off road cycling routes and access to both rowing and sailing on nearby Derwentwater ensures that there is something for everyone. Excellent local restaurants include the Scafell hotel in Rosthwaite and Langstrath hotel in Stonethwaite - both a short walk away. Keswick offers a wide variety of food shops (the Co-op currently deliver free in Borrowdale, and Sainsbury’s deliver if you order online although there is none nearby), excellent outdoor equipment shops, a theatre and cinema along with many other attractions. A regular bus service runs directly to Keswick down Borrowdale or using the scenic route via Honister pass and Buttermere.
Please note that Longthwaite Farmhouse is situated between a river and a working farm. It can feel cold and damp when it has been unoccupied for a week or more and there are occasionally mice. The house uses a wood burning stove and night storage heaters downstairs, rather than central heating. During the winter months especially, we recommend that on arrival visitors light the stove and put hot water bottles in the beds. We suggest you should aim to get there in daylight.
With heavy rain, Borrowdale receives over 200" per year (London 25"), the access lane can become impassable where it runs beside the river. The level may rise rapidly but recedes just as fast and access is rarely restricted for more than a few hours. On extremely rare occasions the river level reaches the front door and may seep into the ground floor. There are detailed instructions at the house about what to do in the very unlikely event that this should happen during your stay. If the above does not put you off, then we know you will love it!

“wonderful place to get away from it all...”
amazing location, really lovely rustic old place with everything you need to be comfortable and none of the frills. comfy beds and lulled to sleep by the river running past. Surrounding views are gorgeous, and working farm on doorstep keeps the kids interested (very happy farmer buzzing around on a quad bike - always with a smile - there's a man who enjoys his work...) sunny days great for walking (lots of flat walks nearby for the oldies) hiking (some of the best hikes in the lakes from your doorstep) or kayaking / swimming in Derwent water or the river (Grange bridge was our favourite spot). rainy days spent watching the river rise, playing board games, doing jigsaws and lots of reading (my PS4 mad 11 year old read 3 novels in 6 days, - reactivating the parts of the brain that atrophy while staring zombie like at a screen!) because of the location, you can visit the lakes in the summer months and completely miss the crowds - still really quiet and isolated, even on 'busy' days. very special place, but if you like all the mod cons and comforts, this isn't the place for you - its rustic, charming and basic - an antidote to modern living. good food at the Scafell Hotel, and good take away cappuccinos at the YHA hostel up the road.

“Longthwaite Farmhouse”
A wonderful house for a family get together. A warm and cosy farmhouse in a beautiful setting. The children were pleasantly impressed with the fun they had in the river and the close proximately of the Youth Hostel with its games room making up for the lack of internet and TV. Excellent communication from Tim, the owner, thanks for sharing your holiday home with us.

“Great base to explore the Lakes”
Longthwaite was perfect for me and a group of friends as a base to go walking & cycling around Borrowdale. As Tim (the owner) says, it doesn't have all the mod cons, but it's full of character, has plenty of room and a fantastic wood burning stove! The location is excellent - very close to the river, walking distance to nearby pubs and you have immediate access to many walking routes without the need to drive. We loved it and will definitely be back for a future visit!

“Wonderful stay at Longthwaite.”
We travelled to Longthwaite Farmhouse in Borrowdale to celebrate my husbands 60th birthday and Father's Day, with our family and their partners. . I did at first worry that the lack of mobile phone reception and WiFi would prove challenging for the younger generation, but no need. They were so charmed and enthralled by the house and riverside location that they had a wonderful time and had to be prised out on Monday morning, so saddened by the prospect of leaving and returning to normality. Even though we live, and they were raised in the Northumberland Dale's, Longthwaite was utterly captivating. . We are all in agreement, "we must return some day soon" . . . Many Thanks Tim for sharing your beautiful house with us. . . Karen Pringle.
