Description from owner

Description

Nestled on beautiful cobbled Bethesda Hill in the heart of Downalong, Shutters is the perfect getaway if you want to escape it all but still have everything you need just steps away.

We’re Jenny and Chris, owners of Shutters and long time lovers of St Ives. We both spent many happy childhood holidays here and wanted a place where we could get away from our busy lives. After hunting for two years we fell in love with Shutters and we hope you’ll love this special place too.

Shutters is a nautically themed, traditional fisherman’s cottage renovated by Slovenian born craftsman Jani. Renowned for his passion for the environment and sustainable materials, this shows in every handcrafted piece in the house.

As you arrive at Shutters you’ll find us tucked away on a quiet street, it’s too narrow for cars so perfect if you have kids. The only noise you’ll hear is the cry of seagulls, as the soft sand on Harbour Beach is just 30 steps away. You might spot artists from the local art school sitting and sketching the view towards the harbour.

Open the door and you’ll be on the ground floor. You’ll find a warm and welcoming family lounge, with enough seating for 6, 32” smart TV and DVD player, perfect for relaxing after a day exploring the Cornish countryside. Behind the gorgeous granite wall, complete with original pilchard press, you’ll find a utility and wet room, so you can shake off the day after sand castle building, surfing or swimming at one of the local beaches.

If you’re planning days out you’ll find a picnic hamper, cool bag and some funky traditional deckchairs, which you’re welcome to use. And if there’s laundry to do you can use the washing machine, drying rack and ironing board.

Jani’s bespoke staircase, reminiscent of those you’d find on a ship, transports you to the second floor and the light and airy kitchen and dining area. The round dining table seats four on built in benches and there are four folding chairs for any extra guests. We’ve included all the mod cons you’d expect – dishwasher, microwave, fridge with freezer compartment, electric oven and hob.

Once you’re done with dinner you can unwind in the lounge area next to the kitchen. There’s a radio for a bit of background noise and a selection of children’s games and books to keep the kids amused. And there’s a sofa bed if you fancy a quick holiday nap.

When it’s time for bed the spiral staircase takes you up to the two double bedrooms on the third floor. You can just about spy the sea from one of the bedrooms. We’ll make up the beds for your arrival with crisp white sheets and they’ll be plenty of towels. More of Jani’s handwork is in the bedrooms, with handmade benches acting as storage.

We have a dog, Holly, and she’s part of our family so we’re happy for you to bring yours with you. We’ll charge you an extra £30 for one well-behaved furry friend, because Shutters might need a bit of extra cleaning. Our dog has her moments and we wouldn’t leave her alone in the house, so we ask that you do the same. And we know this might make some of you a bit sad but we like our doggies to stay off the furniture – just don't give in when they give you the sad eyes!

Because of the number of steps in the house and the open staircases we don't think it would suit you if you’re less mobile, in a wheelchair or have toddlers.

We’re parents to two very energetic boys, aged 6 and 8, who love being steps away from the beach and because of the children and dogs we’re a non-smoking property.

We can provide a travel cot but please can you bring your own bedding for your baby, as you know what suits them best.

Our nearest pub is The Sloop Inn – an ancient pub humming with the history of sailors and fishermen.

There are plenty of local shops including Boots and The Co-Op for groceries. And we’d suggest you try local independent bakeries such as St Ives Bakery (Fore Street) for delicious meringues and freshly baked Cornish Pasties. Just watch out for the seagulls who might try and steal your goodies!

St Ives is a food lovers delight. If you get up early enough you can watch the fishermen bringing in their catch and then buy it, direct from the fisherman’s doorway, in the next street to the cottage. On the doorstep you’ll find a wonderful pizza restaurant, serving stone baked slices of deliciousness. Or get some freshly caught fish cooked to perfection at Harbour Fish and Chips. Start your day with a silky latte and watch the world go by at Porthmeor café. And if you fancy something special it’s worth the short drive to The Halsetown Inn.

You’ll find beaches galore in the local area – on the other side of Bethesda Hill is a fabulous surfing beach and there are plenty of dog walking coves nearby. You can surf, kayak or try coasteering at Porthmeor Beach.

If you want to paddle board, hire a speedboat or take a boat tour there are several operators in the Harbour.

Once you get to the cottage you’ll find a welcome pack bursting with ideas for places to visit and more details on local beaches, restaurants, shops and all the amenities you’ll need to make this your perfect coastal Cornish retreat.

House rules

The bins in St Ives are collected early each Friday morning (around 7am). Shutters is on a pedestrianised street. For guests staying on a Thursday night, could you please wheel the bin to the top of Bethesda Hill (this is only a few yards) to allow the bin to be collected. Many thanks
