Description from owner

Description

Nestled in the foothills of the French Pyrenees, Ceret is the perfect location for a relaxing, cultured stay. Within its winding streets and squares lies 16bis Rue de Vieux Ceret. Once two townhouses, this 16th Century maison de ville has been classically refurbished while retaining the French traditional features like stone coving, wooden ceiling beams and the original terracotta floor tiles. Built as part of the original walled city consisting of the Church and two curved cobblestone streets, 16bis is a perfect location to explore this delightfully shady, yet bustling town.

Begin with the bakery that opens at 7am and is 30 seconds away from the house. From the Easter Procession to the Cherry Festival in June, there is always plenty to see and do in Ceret itself. You will certainly enjoy the fountains, cafe terraces, the Museum of Modern Art, public swimming pool, bullring, sports grounds and the busy Saturday market.

Further details

To allow visitors to enjoy greater flexibility regarding arrival and departure times, we have installed a lockbox at the door where the keys are kept. You will be told the code when you confirm a booking. A local woman will ensure that the house is clean and tidy, the beds freshly made and hand towels provided. The many stairs may be difficult for elderly or infirm visitors and the stairs and balconies make the house unsuitable for small children. There is a folding fabric cot/playpen for a baby and ample room for it in the large bedroom. Strollers or bicycles can be stored in the entrance hallway. Upon request, during the winter months single adult women can stay as "lodgers" for a week at a time, sharing the house and facilities with the female owner.

Further details indoors

Spacious is the word that best describes this large three-storey house with 765 sq.ft. of comfortable living space on each of the two floors above the ground floor entrance and rez-de-chaussee. The first floor consists of a modern kitchen, dining room and living room with air conditioning, satellite, convertible A/C, flat-screen TV, DVD player with many DVDs, and portable fans for warm weather . In the cooler weather there is a warm air heat pump, cast iron stove and portable electric radiators for cozy winter nights. The top floor has sleeping accommodation for 5 or 6 people in two double bedrooms plus mezzanine, each with a balcony and ceiling fan. There is also a spacious mezzanine area with air conditioning/heat pump unit, suitable for sleeping or just a relaxing read. Newly renovated, there is a separate WC with wash handbasin and bath/shower room on this floor and a new automatic washing machine. The house has two air conditioning/heat pump units and a new shower/toilet/whb on the entrance floor. Also new this year with the WiFi is a landline with free calls to EU landlines, plus satellite TV with many sports channels and all the British and Irish TV and radio channels.

.You can just imagine having breakfast on the large rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the surrounding town and hills. Ceret is a quiet town and Rue de Vieux Ceret is too narrow for cars so it is very peaceful.

Further details outdoors

You will especially enjoy the tranquil delights of strolling the winding cobblestone streets of Ceret , dining al fresco in the many nearby restaurants, attending classical concerts in the nearby Church and music college, and hiking in the hills overlooking the town. A large municipal pool and tennis courts are available in July and August. Visitors do not need a car to access Ceret because there is plenty of public transport to/from Perpignan and towns in the area. There are two supermarkets, an Internet cafe and the famous Saturday outdoor market in Ceret. Free parking is available at Les Tins public carpark three minutes walk from the house. There is a lake and water adventure playground at St. Jean Lakes, 10 minutes from Ceret. If you have a car you will certainly enjoy a visit to the Salvadore Dali Museum in Figueres, Spain, an hour south, or to Barcelona two hours away. Closer to Ceret you can enjoy a trip on the unique Yellow Train which is one of the famous Train Journeys of the World.

Response from the owner Thank you for suggesting the vegetarian restaurant beside the Museum of Modern Art. French towns are quieter in October but there is still lots to see and do. I love the €1 bus fare into Perpignan and surrounds. True, my house has flights of stairs but some guests with reduced mobility have enjoyed the suite on the entrance level. Please come again!

Response from the owner Hello Emma, Thank you for your kind words about my house and the town of Ceret. As you said, the house is bigger than people anticipate and there was plenty room for the four of you. Next time you come you will be able to enjoy my brand new double-glazed wooden windows and a new ventilation system throughout my 3-storey house. I closed for a few months this winter to have heating renovations completed. Thank you for leaving the house so clean and tidy. You are welcome to return anytime!

“Fantastic location, rustic charm, great facilities, delightful mixture of Spanish and French culture”

Reviewed 9 Sep 2013

Three generations (husband and wife, five year old son and grandmother) all had a wonderfully relaxing, inspiring and fun holiday at Isis. The house is traditional, clean, comfortable and spacious and very charming! The house has modern fittings, effective plumbing, plenty of fans and air conditioning (if you want it), great satellite TV, a range of DVDs, good communication facilities, and a new washing machine. The linen was good and there was plenty of space to dry the linen. There are two lovely sized bedrooms and a great Mezzanine with a single bed, perfect for a child or teenager (and a sofa bed in the living room). The bedrooms all have great access to the recently renovated toilet and bathroom, and there is another bathroom with excellent shower on the ground floor too. The house is so spacious that it is particularly suited for extended family, or I imagine friends on holiday together. Lots of privacy. A real bonus for us was having a roof terrace to enjoy! It was perfect for soaking up the atmosphere of Ceret, early morning and well into the night! The memories of eating our evening meals on the roof terrace will stay with us for many years to come! We would sit outside, listening to the lovely Catalan music drifting up from the town most evenings. Although one of the bedrooms is very soundproofed if live music isn't your thing! The house is very peaceful. It is a stone's throw from the patisseries, shops and restaurants, but we didn't find lots of people walking past, as there are many streets all with access the town, and no cars have access to the streets surrounding the house. We fell in love with Ceret, and we spent many days without using a car at all: wandering to the local patisseries for breakfast, enjoying a lunch in the town, walking with spectacular views of the mountains, mooching around lovely little artistic shops and incredible day and evening markets, and then enjoying a restful cool down in the house in the afternoon, only to wander out again in the evening for a meal! We love the region, and although you don't need a car, the house is a great base to explore the historic ruins, boating and swimming with kids on a nearby lake, visiting the many lovely towns of the region and into the mountains, riding the yellow train, visiting spain, exploring the medieval towns of Villafrance and the amazing national park from Prades to Aude and the Cathar region. You can drive to the beaches on the med too! The owner of the house is lovely. She was so very helpful and friendly, and couldn't do enough to assist us. The instructions that were sent before we arrived were wonderful, including detailed driving instructions to help us find the house, which was invaluable and we would have been lost without them. The locals were lovely and friendly too, and we look back on our holiday and the house which such fond memories. We hope to return again one day!

“Great property”

Reviewed 16 Oct 2012

We had a wonderful holiday in this lovely townhouse, it lived up to all our expectations. It is a spacious property with loads of character really close to all the action in this busy little town. The owner is friendly and very helpful. The kitchen is small but perfectly adequate with plenty of plates, pots, pans etc. The dining area is off the kitchen and sits 6 comfortably. Through an archway off the kitchen/dining area is a very spacious lounge with comfy sofa and two chairs. The television receives free satellite channels and is easy to use. Both double bedrooms are of a decent size and the beds are comfortable. Bathroom is fine, although could do with a bit of updating which the owner is planning to do next year. There is a washing machine but it's design is not one we had come across before, so we didn't use it. The terrace is accessed by quite steep stairs but it's so worth the effort, take care descending if you have had a bottle of wine or two!! It has views over terracotta rooftops, view of the church bell tower and is private. The house is set in a narrow cobbled street with pedestrian access only with houses across and joined to it.....as in a terrace so you will here people and the church bells but this in no way detracts form the property but adds to the feeling of being part of a community. The town itself is lively with plenty of places to eat and drink. Art museum is worth a visit as are the little private art galleries. Some shops to browse in and there is easy parking close by. Walking is excellent with well marked trials of varying length and difficulty. We didn't hire a car and this was no problem, good supermarket within a 10 minute walk, excellent butcher and bakery close to house. We have no hesitation in recommending this house or the town of Ceret, go enjoy....you'll love it.
