Description from owner

Description

This cosy cottage sits right on the waters edge and is both remote and isolated. Your only neighbours being the sea birds, seals and the occasional otter! It really is an ideal retreat, where you can escape the bustle of daily life and relax.

It is ideally placed right at the centre of the Outer Hebrides, so you can explore from Eriskay (with regular connections to Barra) to the south, to Berneray (with regular connections to Harris) to the North.

It was originally built as a shieling to house land workers, and is now a comfortable holiday retreat, with the added advantage of a log burning stove to snuggle up to after a long day out. There is also a 3kW EV charge point for use by our guests (additional charges apply for energy used).

Getting around

Although there are a few buses which run between Berneray and Eriskay, realistically a car is pretty essential to get around. The cottage is about 2 miles from the shops and nearest bus stop. Some of the main road from the north to south of the Hebrides is double track, but most of the roads on the islands are single track with passing places.

Interaction with guest

Guests are left to enjoy the peace and solitude of the cottage without inturruption. However, help is on hand should there be a problem.

“Cosy cottage in a perfect location”

Reviewed 25 Nov 2021

We had spent a great week at this property back in 2007 and, returning in September of this year, were keen to see how it had been refurbished. And we were not disappointed. The external character of the cottage is unchanged, but inside the facilities have been thoroughly updated, and the place is as well-equipped as you could wish for. The bed is comfortable, the kitchen appliances excellent and the bathroom better than our own at home. But what really makes Airidh an Dobhrain special is its location. It sits right next to the water and well away from any other properties. From the lounge window we often saw otters in the loch and white-tailed eagles flying overhead – golden eagles also made an appearance towards the end of the week – and the cottage is situated between North and South Uist which is ideal for exploring the rest of the islands. The owner and the local contacts are extremely helpful and nice to deal with. We won't be leaving it so long before we make our next return visit.

Perfect location for exploring North and South Uist. Log burner was a plus and plenty of fuel on offer. Loved watching the ebb and flow of the tide into the loch. Lovely garden - shame about the midges! Perfect for a couple.
