Description from owner

Description

Your peaceful holiday cottage, Le Peuplier at Cousserat, which has been lovingly renovated, awaits you. Sitting in a calm, tranquil part of the Bordeaux vine growing area, yet only a ten minute drive from the Dordogne River and twenty five minutes from the picturesque UNESCO site village of Saint Émilion, this old, stone built gite offers you a perfect space to relax and wind down. The 200 year old cottage mixes the charm of original oak beams and a stunning stone fireplace, housing a log burner for cooler spring and autumn evenings, with contemporary living. The cottage has one large bedroom with a king sized bed and a day bed that can be used as a single bed or an extra, restful space with comfortable cushions, to read your holiday novel. The fully tiled bathroom has a large, walk-in shower and heated towel rail. Downstairs, the open plan living accommodation offers you a modern, well equipped kitchen together with a relaxing seating area, satellite TV and dining table.

The space

Beautifully situated in our large gardens, surrounded by vineyards and woods, Le Peuplier can be found in the tiny hamlet of Cousserat. You will have sole use of the entire cottage and use of the shared pool that overlooks the vines and surrounding woodlands. Around the pool you will be able to chill out on comfortable sun loungers with soft mattresses either in the sun or the shade of a parasol.

Outside your gite you will find a comfortable wooden decked area for outside dining and drinking, including, of course, a BBQ for summer evening outdoor cooking. As well as a dining space, you can sit and relax on comfortable cushioned armchairs and settees which you can easily move around to be either in the sun or one of the several shaded areas around the gite gardens.

Comfortable bedding, crisp, cotton linen and Egyptian cotton towels are provided for you, together with pool towels. The kitchen is very well equipped and contains a dishwasher, washing machine, gas hob, electric fan oven and microwave. You will have wifi internet access and we also provide a brochure which details the many places, local attractions, vineyards and restaurants you can visit during your stay.

Our nearest village is Soussac, which is less than a mile away; you can find the local ‘depot de pain’ here and a café. Pellegrue is five minutes away by car and this is where you will find the nearest supermarket. Bordeaux is one hour away and Bergerac 45 minutes. In addition, we are about twenty minutes away from Sainte Foy La Grande which hosts the biggest regional market. Duras, with its ancient hilltop chateau is nearby as is Gensac which has two restaurants and a boulangerie. Saint Émilion is twenty minutes from Cousserat. The historic bastide town of Sauveterre-de-Guyenne is a 15 minute drive away. Finally, we are a 13 minute drive from the wedding venues Chateau Soulac and Chateau Rigaud.

Other things to note.

Bookings during July and August are for 7 nights with a minimum 3 night booking at all other times.

For the comfort and safety of our guests the cottage and our gardens are a strictly no smoking zone except in the designated area provided.

We are also unable to accept pets under any circumstances.

The property is not suitable for children under 10.

The pool is shared.

“A tranquil, friendly place in the middle of rolling wine country”

Reviewed 8 Oct 2017

This was our second visit to Cousserat in this tranquil part of South West France. We flew into Bergerac airport which is tiny compared to many other airports and as such arrival and departure is relatively easy. The car hire companies are literally 50 metres from the airport arrivals and so we were on our way in our hire car within 15 minutes and then within 20 minutes in the French countryside surrounded by vineyards and in one of the most famous wine areas on earth.  It takes about 45 minutes to get to Penny and Mike’s and their directions were spot on without any need to use sat nav.  We were met by our hosts Penny and Mike who have transformed their gite into beautifully designed and equipped accommodation as your base to  explore this part of France.  We had the guide produced by Penny and Mike for the area which although we new some of the small towns and villages from our first stay at Cousserat the guide proved valuable in seeing more of the area. We visited a market town most days, we drove further south one day to near Biarritz to visit friend and could see the Pyrenees in the distance.  We also drove to the coast which is about 90 mins to the Arcachon Basin and walked up the highest sand dune in France and then ran all the way down which felt like being a kid again! On the same trip we went to a fantastic bird reserve which was on a larger scale than most U.K. equivalents and you happily stay a whole day there.  Mike and Penny have now been in France for a couple years and have a growing network of contacts who can help you make the most of your stay. For example we visited a Chateau and vineyard run by an English couple and were given a personal tour of the vines and how the good stuff was made together with tasting wine from their current and back catalogue of fine wines.  So we have booked for our third visit to Cousserat next year and hope to make it an annual trip to where you get a great welcome and explore a beautiful part of the world in more depth. Penny and Mike are very welcoming though leave you to do your own thing. We spent many pleasant evenings sat with a bottle of wine looking across the vineyards and the surrounding countryside planning our next day in this part of heaven on earth!

“The perfect spot for relaxing and stargazing”

Reviewed 2 Oct 2017

“Le Peuplier” Gite is located in a tranquil spot in the French countryside surrounded by picturesque vineyards. It is easy to get to from either Bordeaux or Bergerac airport. The property is clean and stylishly decorated with all the facilities you need including a dishwasher and washing machine. There is a swimming pool and a good assortment of garden furniture, including a hammock, to relax in, as well as a BBQ that you can use. The local boulangerie for the daily croissant fix and the supermarket are both within three miles of the property. The owners, Penny and Mike, provide a warm welcome and make every effort to ensure their guests are comfortable. A nice touch is the welcome pack of some food essentials including a jar of home-made jam and a complimentary bottle of wine. There is a helpful information pack provided in the gite with details of local attractions and Penny and Mike are happy to share their local knowledge. Definitely recommend visiting some of the nearby traditional markets to sample the local produce and mix with the locals. Also a trip to the wine centre of Saint Emilion is a must – a world heritage site and , as you might expect, a great place for some wine tasting. But best of all is the opportunity to relax in the peace and quiet and enjoy some stargazing - on a clear night the stars are amazing.

Response from the owner Thank you for your kind words! It was great to see you enjoying the peace and relaxation at Le Peuplier, especially the hammock moments. We do hope you return to do some more star gazing and market browsing :). Penny & Mike.
