Description

The Well House

This welcoming French country house, with views over the surrounding countryside, nestles on the edge of the tranquil rural village of Les Essards.

Incorporating exposed stonework and huge wooden beams, the building, once a barn, retains much of its original character and charm. The decoration and furnishings give a homely feel, in a traditional French country style.

The spacious accommodation offers upstairs 1 double bedroom, and 1 twin bedroom, both en suite, and downstairs a double bedroom with an adjacent shower room and toilet.

There is a large relaxing sitting room with dining area, an eat-in kitchen, and a comfortable galleried snug with television, leading off the master bedroom.

Outside there is a large shaded eating area overlooking the salt water swimming pool (gated), in the half- acre garden.

For the more energetic, there are many beautiful walks and cycle paths, directly from the house.

The little town of St Aulaye is a few minutes’ drive, with a supermarket, bank, laundromat, pharmacy and tourist office, where you can get free WiFi. There is also a river beach with a restaurant (try the moules), where you can swim, hire a canoe, tree climb, and play mini golf. Bicycles can be hired locally and delivered to the house.

The house is less than 10 minutes drive from Aubeterrre sur Dronne, one of the prettiest villages in France, famous for its underground monolithic church. Aubeterre has many shops, cafes and restaurants around the attractive square, and a lively Sunday morning market.

The nearby towns of Chalais (9 km) and Riberac (20 km) both have extensive weekly markets.

There is also the beautiful lakeside beach at Etang Jemaye ,17 kms away, and the river beach at Aubeterre.

Further afield and well worth a visit,

St Emilion, a world heritage site renowned for its vineyards. 1hr

Brantome, a picturesque riverside town with a chateau, often referred to as Little Venice. 1hr

Pilat Sand Dune, the tallest natural sand dune near Bordeaux. 1.5 hr

Bordeaux, with its stunning architecture. 1hr

Cognac, with its many Brandy houses .1.5 hr

Also within reach are other interesting towns of the Dordogne, including Sarlat, Limeuil, Tremolat and Le Bugue.

“Wonderful holiday home”

Reviewed 13 Aug 2023

We had the most relaxing holiday at the beautiful Well House. It is a spacious house - much bigger than the photos indicate- very well equipped and a cool retreat from the sunshine with its thick stone walls. The beds were comfy and all the towels and linen beautifully clean. The views all around the property are stunning, with gorgeous sunflower fields and lovely walks, and we spotted so much wildlife, including deer, an eagle and wild boar. The pool is fantastic but not heated which is not a problem if the weather is good. The owner Sue with whom we liaised was so helpful and kind, giving great local tips and ensuring the pool was kept clean, lawn mowed and even light bulbs changed by their handyman. We had expected to have no internet connection but there was 5G and great connection. We would highly recommend this place and hope to return one day.

“Best gite we have ever stayed in”

Reviewed 28 Aug 2019

I'm almost reluctant to write this because I would like to keep it a secret! However: The Well House is a superb place to stay; it is well equipped and very comfortably furnished. It is a bit quirky (be prepared to have to bend under low beams to get to one of the bedrooms upstairs) but it is a beautiful, airy, barn conversion. We have already booked for next year because we loved it so much. There is a shady verandah outside from which you can enjoy a lovely view of the sunflower fields opposite whilst you eat a leisurely breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are lots of places to sit and enjoy the well cared for garden....whose well stocked herb garden is close enough to the verandah for its scents to wash over you whilst you sit and read. At the back is an expanse of lawn for those who wish to be a bit more active, or, of course, there is a sparkling pool (salt water) to enjoy. There are some gorgeous walks around; one that goes over the opposite hillside provides you with a lovely view of the Well House. There is a good off road parking place. Incidentally, if you see half a dozen cars go past in a day you know it's busy! When we could drag ourselves away we visited the local markets, we drank coffee in the square in St Aulay, or enjoyed a drink at its river beach. One day we visited St Emilion, a pleasant hour's drive away, and twice we visited a fascinating artist's garden at Montignac-le-Coq. Our favourite place was Aubeterre, one of France's "most beautiful villages" with its subterranean church, art galleries, tiny, dark antique shops, and a square with a variety of restaurants serving dinner under the shade of the trees. BUT the best bit in Aubeterre is the beach and the river swimming which are outstanding for adults and children alike. Like us, you could hire a canoe for an hour and paddle gently upstream and back, or for a longer trip (but, beware, this would mean dragging the canoe out and past weirs along the river). All in all...highly recommended. Thank you Sue...especially for the super friendly welcome you gave us.

“Just beautiful”

Reviewed 16 Aug 2018

We stayed here for 8 nights and had a fantastic time. The house is beautiful and well equipped, great size for a family. The pool and garden are stunning, the pool was used so much due to very hot weather! The location is very quiet but close enough to get to places by car and bike. Communication was fantastic, Sue put us in contact with Patrick who hires the bikes and sent us regular updates on the weather and sunflowers. We could not have asked for a better holiday experience.
