Description

Spiti Stelios Restored Traditional Artisan House (sleeps up to 6 in 2 Double and 2 Single bedrooms)

Situated in the trendy mediaeval hilltop village of Pyrgos - benefiting from direct sunset views - Spiti Stelios originally served as an old artisan house and winery dating back to the early 18th century. This traditional building with beautiful caldera and island views, has been restored and converted into a simple and friendly family holiday home. Teams of local artisans have used traditional crafts, techniques and materials to restore this authentic comfortable Santorini 4 bedroom dwelling.

Approached via a footpath which has breathtaking views across the island and aegean beyond, the entrance to Spiti Stelios is into a large authentic cobblestoned courtyard whith outdoor dining area and barbecue. Spiti Stelios has a large 80 sq. mtr. sunbathing terrace, ideal for sitting with a glass of local wine and enjoying the spectacular sunsets (which are almost guaranteed on this island). On a clear day it is possible to make out as many as 7 different islands in the distance.

Inside, the spacious living room features two traditional Santorini couches, scattered with locally made cushions and an alcove - which used to be the tread for the white grapes - now converted into a snug/TV area. The well equipped kitchen makes easy work of preparing breakfast/meals, with plenty of utensils, modern appliances and a dishwasher. Adjacent to the kitchen is one of the single bedrooms with breathtaking views of the island. An arched doorway leads to the central hallway which retains some of the original features of what used to be the red grape tread. The hallway leads to the second single bedroom, the master bedroom and the family bathroom with its loo with a view. The master bedroom is light and airy, with beautiful caldera views and double doors opening onto a second enclosed courtyard. Adjacent to the master bedroom is the other single bedroom. In total there are one master bedroom and two single bedrooms on this level.

In addition there is an authentic 'yposkafo' double bedroom downstairs with en-suite wet room. This benefits from having its own independent entrance from the street but also from the second enclosed courtyard. This double en-suite yposkafo is carved out of the rock in typical Santorinian style and served as the workshop where cheese and other artisan products were made in years gone by. The rear courtyard also features an outdoor shower for rinsing off after the beach.

The beautiful sugar-cube village of Pyrgos is one of the prettiest places on the island, built around the remains of the mediaeval castle, in a charming mixture of winding lanes and white-washed churches with distinctive blue domes. Pyrgos is centrally located with access to multiple beaches.

Beaches

There are at least 2 beaches which are only 15 min drive from Pyrgos (1. Kamari and 2. Vlychada). In addition, Perissa and Perivolos beaches are a 20 min drive from Pyrgos. While public transport is available from the village square, renting a car is strongly recommended.

On the other side of the island there are several beaches most notably Vourvoulos, Baxedes, Pori and Cape Columbo. Cape Columbo is somewhat secluded and a perfect location if you are looking for peace and quiet. It is reputed to 'sit' on a series of mini volcanic craters deep under the sea bed and the far end of this beach is a naturist/nudist beach.

Walks

You can walk along the cliffs from Fira to Oia, about 11 km. Start out in the morning when it's cool and be sure to take along plenty of water, a snack, sun cream, sunglasses and a hat!

There is a hiking trail between Perissa Beach and Kamari Beach that passes by the archaeological site of Ancient Thira at the summit of the mountain. The Perissa side is a dirt trail. The Kamari side is a paved road with steep switchbacks. Not counting the time you spend exploring Ancient Thira, the hike will take you about 2 hours.

Restaurants

In the village, there are several local restaurants and tavernas, all within a short (7 min) walk from Spiti Stelios. We are also conveniently situated near two of the best restaurants the island has to offer: Selene restaurant and Metaxi Mas taverna, both a mere 15 min walk from the house.

Response from the owner Dear G****, Thank you for your kind words, we know how important holidays are to our guests and we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Spiti Stelios. Glad that you enjoyed the spacious roof terrace with the panoramic views of the island and the large courtyard with the barbeque. Extra kudos to you for trying out some of Stelios’ recipes  and good to hear that the house offered the mod cons to make your stay comfortable. Pyrgos village is indeed unique, it is the only year-round working village on Santorini which still retains its ‘Greek’ village charm. We do hope to welcome you back one day, meanwhile we wish you happy memories!

Response from the owner Thank you so much for a fabulous review. We take guest feedback very seriously, as it helps us make improvement for future guests. We will explore the option of fans, though in our experience the Northerly aspect of the property is such that opening the master bedroom windows and the front lounge windows usually creates a very pleasant breeze in all but the most windless of days. As for the WiFi – even with the very latest router we installed just prior to your arrival! – the very nature of the 80-110 cm thick walls of this traditional dwelling and the fact that the ‘yposkafo’ (cave room) is downstairs, means that the WiFi signal has its limitations. Otherwise we are glad you enjoyed the incredible living space this house has to offer and the incomparable views from the roof terrace. We are glad to hear that the overall experience helped restore your energy to return to the hurricane-ravaged Florida with fond memories from this island of balmy weather and gracious inhabitants!
