Description from owner

Description

The Anchor Point Captain Cook Lodge has 4 twin beds and 2 queen beds. This is a massive log home with a high cathedral ceiling. There are two full tub/shower baths, one on the first floor and the other in the loft.. The full Kitchen has upscale stainless steel appliances including refrigerator, double sink, glass cook top, convection oven and over-the-range microwave oven. There is a large dining table in the kitchen. The family Room has an entertainment center, leather recliner seat for two with center drink console, a leather recliner chair and leather couch. The loft has a second full bath, 4 twin beds and a queen bed.

There is a large open porch with table and chairs and gas BBQ where you can relax and watch for moose and eagles.

The Captain Cook is located on Bear Paw's 14-acre homestead property. Access to the building is a private drive that connects with both the Sterling Highway and Camai Road.

This is one of 4 unique log buildings offered by Bear Paw Adventure. These buildings are considered unique, even for this picturesque Alaska location, because of the handcrafted style of the buildings, Alaskan furnishings including big game mounts, log furniture and the extent to which the buildings are stocked with supplies. The massive log structures are set among the spruce trees, alders and wildflowers on a 14 acre section of an original Alaska homestead. Guests enjoy comfortable lodging and a sample of real Alaska.

Anchor Point is the westernmost point in the North American connected highway system. Driving directions from Anchorage are fairly simple - just take the only road south out of Anchorage (the Seward Highway or Route 1), then continue on Route 1 when it turns right and becomes the Sterling Highway. Follow the Sterling to Anchor Point. Total driving time from Anchorage is about four hours. This is one of the most scenic locations in the world with views of 4 volcanoes across Cook Inlet and rugged peaks and glaciers across Kachemak Bay. The area is known for fantastic scenery and exciting Alaska adventures and known around the world as a fishing hot spot.

Getting around

The best way to get around on the Kenai Peninsula, especially in the Anchor Point area, is by car. Bus service is very limited and the passenger train does not operate in the area. Taxi service is available out of Homer. Having said that, great sightseeing tours are available by boat and by air.

Interaction with guest

When you arrive on the homestead property, you can go directly to your reserved building and open the door using the door code provided to you with your reservation. Inside, you will find a one-page letter addressed to you with more information and phone numbers of our staff. We are on the property (in another building) and ready to assist you. There are almost unlimited things to do in the area, and we have a short list of preferred charter operators that we trust and work with.

Response from the owner Thank you for your comments and we are happy to see that you plan to come back to stay with us again. Our website indicates that we are” located just off the Sterling Highway” and that the property is a “natural, nearly-wild Alaska homestead property.” For the most part, trees and alders block the view and most of the noise from traffic on the Sterling. Our use of the property is the first since the original homestead and we have kept it as natural as practical so that our guests enjoy and sample of rural Alaska. We don’t intended to represent the location as “remote” such as you might get with a fly-in location. However, we do offer a “nearly-wild experience” with the convenience of easy driving access to stores, shops and adventure tours. We apologize for the dripping shower head, which has since been repaired. We put a new water well in service this past year and apparently some fine particles in the water had caused the shower valve to leak temporarily. We are on the property 24-7 to respond to issues such as this, and on your next stay, please don’t hesitate to let us know immediately about concerns. We use only high quality mattresses, which are replaced according to schedule. All the twin mattresses in the buildings, except those Moose Cabin, have been in service less than two years and those in Moose Cabin are scheduled for replacement in 2015. Thank you for the comment about the heater instructions – we will post additional instructions for the high efficiency heaters. It does take a few minutes for the heater to fire up and respond to set point temperature changes. We are looking forward to seeing you again soon.
