Experience the grandeur of the French Empire decorative style. The house’s history is the history of our country. Whether the criterion is age, beauty, or architectural importance, the Shirley-Eustis House is one of the most venerable mansions of North America. A summer residence built in 1747 by William Shirley, Royal Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, was constructed in the Georgian ‘villa’ style of English country houses of the day. Its gracious interior features a majestic two-story Great Hall. The next seventy years brought many Federal-style changes to the mansion and our other namesake, Governor William Eustis is included in those changes. His wife, Madam Caroline Langdon Eustis is most affectionately held in our hearts as the princess of our historic gardens and grounds. Our other residents, Captain James Magee, of the Northwest China Trade, Madame de Fitz Patrice, a wealthy Haitian slave-revolt refugee and the countless Irish immigrants who graced our halls during the Industrial Revolution are all included here at Shirley Place. The House was even overtaken during the great siege of Boston during the American Revolution and was home to Col. Asa Whitcomb’s Massachusetts 6th-Foot Infantry. Today, the house represents a blend of many architectural traditions. The “floating staircase” is a wonder in itself to see! It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Through lectures, exhibits, events, educational programming, website and Facebook, the Shirley-Eustis House offers an opportunity to learn about the architecture, decorative arts, history, geography, economics, politics and government, and horticulture of Roxbury, Massachusetts, and our nation. The House is open to the public for tours from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, Memorial Day through Labor Day. Weekend Tours take place from Labor Day through Columbus Day. Appointments for tours, special events, site rentals and research can be made year-round. Adults: $5, Students and Seniors: $4. Group rates are available.
