USAA World Traveler's opinion - it's better than described
Left on 03/31/2013 for a stay in March 2013
I travel a lot for work; in 30 years I've stayed in everything you can imagine; Four Seasons in Italy, Maui resorts, villas in the Caribbean, hammocks in Mexico. This was perfect to make our vacation whatever we wanted.
The 1 review about the rundown community was misleading. This is the DR, not Florida. Please, if that's what you expect, go there and don't give americans more of a bad reputation than we already have. Yes, you'll see some vacant buildings, quaint restaurants and beautiful homes. The DR is a developing country, and if you want to be a good citizen of our World, show some respect for that. There are poor areas (I didn't really see that), but I've seen much, much worse in Mexico, Dominica, St. Thomas, and Barbados. It's just... different.
The owner was excellent, the house is nicer than the pics. Weather - perfect every day. "Beachfront" means 1 step from the backyard to the beach; quiet, not deserted. 2 min. walk to slightly more populated beach; little restaurants, thatched-roof palapas, great swimming. Great for kids, swim in the easily identified white-sand areas (bring a mask/snorkel and you'll easily identify where coral and sea urchins are further out).
The gated community is safe, several English-speaking restaurants/shops. You could spend your entire time without leaving, but if that's your plan... go to Florida, please.
We explored every day. If you haven't traveled much outside your country, but want to experience something idyllic, slightly exotic, and relatively quiet, this may be a good place to start. Just use your head and do some research. And if you have traveled, enjoy. A big smile and "Hola" goes a long way. A little Spanish helps tremendously. Mine was rusty, but when seeking directions in Puerto Plata, a shop owner walked us two blocks to the store I was looking for, and left me with a warm smile and a handshake. When was the last time that happened to you in the States?

We enjoyed our 10 day vacation in Costambar. The house is quite large and has a gorgeous view. Two of the bedrooms face east so you can watch the sunrise from your bedroom window! The house is very secure, neighbors friendly and helpful, the manager and house staff is very attentive. Inside the community there are several restaurants, small market, golf course, spa, and beautiful beach. You wouldn't need to venture outside of the community if he didn't want to. If you do, however, Puerto Plata is a busy little community filled with small time entrepreneurs. Your adventures can consist of lots of day trips that will provide you with history (Columbus' first settlement) and social activities (casino and dancing). Note: brush up on your Spanish or download a translation app to make communication easier during your stay.

Greenville NCQuaint villa on the beach with privacy and relaxation
Left on 01/26/2013 for a stay in December 2012
As described with excellent owner communication. Greeted by local property manager who checked in several times during the week. Cleaning service twice during week kept things clean with fresh towels. Easy to get around the small town/village by foot. Taxis readily available for further day trips. Local market with delivery. Good restaurants within walking. Comfortable home for four looking for R&R.; Great that you were on the beach for breezes, easy access to public beach. Would recommend for couples...may need a car with teenagers to go to places. Family oriented beach would be fine for children.

New YorkBeautiful house on the ocean in Costambar, Dominican Republic
Left on 01/01/2013 for a stay in December 2012
We recently rented this beautiful house in Costambar, Dominican Republic for our family. Since it was our first trip to the Dominican Republic, we weren't sure what to expect. But the owner was very helpful about providing restaurant recommendations, information about the area and giving us some ideas for day trips. He arranged to have the manager meet us at the house when we arrived, which was a nice touch. The house itself was perfect for us, with a big master bedroom that has a nice view of the ocean, and rooms for each of our two children. The house was painted with tropical colors and big enough that we had a lot of room to spread out. The property was right on the edge of the ocean, and the views were really special. The main beach was a short walk from the house. The beach was nice and had a long shallow slope which was perfect for the kids. We rented lounge chairs for a couple dollars a day, and spent many wonderful hours relaxing on the beach. There were a couple of good beach restaurants for lunch, and Pina Coladas in the afternoon. Costambar was not fancy or touristy, but it offered everything we needed for a relaxing and affordable vacation.

Boston, MassGreat house, but - A word of warning about Costambar
Left on 08/13/2012 for a stay in July 2012
First, the house itself - it is wonderful. Very clean, bright, and cheerful. The ocean breeze makes the lack of air conditioning on the main level a non-issue. The property manager, Isidro, is fantastic - he caters to all requests promptly and with a friendly smile.
The beach that the house is on, however, is not swimmable - it is narrow and seaweed-clogged. You will need to walk along the main road for 5 mins to get to the beach.
The development that the house is in, Costambar, though - deserves a clear warning for others considering this location.
If you like to steer clear of crowds, in that respect Costambar fits the bill. However we were somewhat taken aback by the run-down nature of what is supposed to be a "gated community" - the abandoned hotel buildings, open piles of trash everywhere, "for sale" signs all over.
The whole place has a real sense of decay about it, like a place whose best days are well behind it.
The diamond in the rough is the club house (Los Mangos), which is fantastic - clean, beautiful pool, great food, etc.
If you are considering this rental - go with an open mind about Costambar itself, and you will not be disappointed.Response from allen cohen - 08/15/2012
Owner
We are pleased that this family enjoyed our beautiful house. As reviewed, our house is very comfortable, relaxing and full of beautiful colors and wonderful views. We have a terrific staff, and are pleased that our manager, Isidro, played an important role in making them comfortable in our house.
The uniqueness of Costambar is that it is not touristy, yet Costambar has everything you need for a relaxing vacation: great beach, local restaurants, country-like walking areas, security, tennis, golf and many other amenities including our clients’ use of the facilities of the Los Mangos Country club.
Clients who stay at our home enjoy the outstanding views of the ocean from every room, as well as when sitting on lounges in our backyard. Being adjacent to a small, natural beach, which is also a coastal tidal point, guarantees no swimming crowds, but offers maximum ocean/beach views and cool breezes. Yet a very short stroll will bring you to the maintained main beach area.
Costambar is a special destination, but unfortunately like other Caribbean countries, it has felt some real estate consequences of the global economic crisis. Our community association is diligently working to keep Costambar clean and beautiful.
Additionally, Costambar is international in every sense; a place where one meets Dominicans, Americans, Italians, Canadians, Germans and people from many other countries, who contribute to its daily life.
Costambar is not for everyone, but it certainly has so much to offer those who want a relaxed, inexpensive authentic Caribbean vacation.

New YorkThe best most relaxing and fun vacation.
Left on 05/22/2012 for a stay in February 2012
Our group vacationed for two weeks at the end of February, this year and consisted of 2 adult couples. Costambar was perfect, very relaxing and user friendly. The Villa we stayed in was everything it was said to be, great location, very clean and plenty of room. Costambar has lots of good, inexpensive restaurants within walking distance and on the beach. The main supermarket has what you need if you choose to cook at home, which we did on a few nights. The people of Dominican Republic are very friendly. The manager and the maid service that we had were very thorough and kept things up to par. Although we spent most of our time on the beautiful beach, a nice amenity was the ability to use the pool the gym and the golf course at the Los Mangos Country club which is about a 15 minute walk from the house. This was a great vacation spot and not only would I recommend this to my family and friends but I will be back. Thanks for everything.

New York CityRelaxed beach house
Left on 04/03/2012 for a stay in February 2012
We had a great time here. We took our 2 kids, ages 6 and 9. The beach is a short walk away and the water is perfect. You can hang out in shallow water or gradually swim into the deeper water. Both my 6 year old and 9 year old snorkeled! You don't have to be in deep water to see colorful fish! The house is beautiful with plenty of room to play. The community of Costambar has a few small supermarkets and many restaurants. We rented a car to explore other towns, beaches and restaurants, but you don't need one. The pool and golf club was a nice addition. It's a great place for a fun, casual family vacation.
