“Great Place To Stay!!!” I found this bungalow by chance. I was looking for a place away from the noise and action and I found it in this place. Very well kept, lovely pool. and everything that you need. You can take a nice 5 min walk to the central or take a motoconcho which those guys close by are great men. I stay there every time I am in the Sosua area. I feel like it is my home when I am there. Privacy is important to me and the bungalow provides that. The owner and his friend makes sure that everything is ready for your stay. I recommend highly!

“Beautiful pool - great vacation in the sun!” My husband and I spent two months at Las Canas this winter. The apartment was all that we needed to totally enjoy our time in the Dominican Republic. It is a clean and comfortable one bedroom apartment. There is a stove, small fridge, and the basic kitchen items needed to prepare your meals. We enjoyed the nice breezes and did not need to use the air conditioner at all. Simone is excellent to rent from. He arranged airport pickup for us and if we ever had any questions or concerns he was very quick to respond. The pool at Las Canas is wonderful. It is huge and very well maintained. The staff at the complex were also very friendly and accomodating. The complex shuttle will transport you into Sosua for a cost of 25 pesos; it will take you to the Playero where you can buy groceries. There is also a small store in the complex if you need basic supplies. The complex also has a restaurant and bar that are open every evening. We loved the weather, the location, and the people we met on this vacation and would not hesitate to book with Simone next year!

“We loved it!!” Joe the owner is a great guy, he made himself available from day one. The condo is very well kept full of bright tropical colors, nice decorations and it has everything you need while away from home. The beaches are both walking distance and the condo is also close to hair salons, restaurants, the supermarket and various shops including a grocery store around the corner. Juan was also very helpful and the price is great. I went with my husband and two children 8 and 13 years old and we all had a great time. Overall we would definitely stay here again!

About Sosúa

Sosúa is a beach haven on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, its main attraction being Playa Sosúa which has drawn in legions of adoring expats and tourists since the 80s.

Sosúa saw an influx of Jews fleeing Nazi Germany during the Second World War adding to its diversity today. They set up a dairy cooperative, Productos Sosuas, hence its recognition as the cheese and milk capital of the Dominican Republic.

The nearest airport is La Union in Puerto Plata, about 16km away. Getting around is cheap and you can jump in and out of guaguas making it ideal for travellers on a budget.

What to do in Sosúa

Sosúa is big on seafood, and you’ll spot fishermen on their boats gathering fresh lobster, crab and fish. Be sure to try the catch of the day at a beach shack, usually served with rice and beans.

Our favourite street snacks include pica pollo, a tasty fried chicken, popular before partying into the evening.

Check out Club 59 (also referred to as El Classico) which plays Latin dance music and is often host to guest DJs. If you’re looking for even more excitement, barrio El Batey on the east of Playa Sosúa is the best for a lively night out.

It’s all about aquatic activities in Sosúa – when you’re not lapping up the picturesque views of the ocean, this is the place to try scuba diving as the coral reef and tropical fish are stunning. Novice divers should head to the Three Rocks, the shallowest dive area best for beginners.

Surfers can get their fix too; the waves are best ridden between December and March, which is also the best time for whale watching.

Birdwatching is a great way to explore the island’s beautiful landscape. The Dominican Republic is home to around 32 species, so pack your binoculars!

Top Sosúa travel tips

The sun shines and weather is warm pretty much all year round, but May to October is the rainy season- which you may want to avoid or, if you don’t mind the rain, book a cheap flight.

Carnaval is a traditional festival held every Sunday in February and is a huge event of costume, parades and dancing.

We visited Sosou for a bachelor party and had an amazing time. The house was HUGE with 5 bedrooms in the main house and 2 bedrooms in the guest house. The pictures were pretty accurate and the place was gorgeous and well kept. The host and the staff at house were awesome. They were very helpful and quick to respond to any questions we had. This vacation rental was recommended to me from a business associate. I have been coming to Sosua on business for the last 2 years. The villa looks just like the pictures on the site. It is very clean, and very well maintained. The backyard is very spacious, with a swimming pool for entertaining. It sits in a gated community which provides additional security and privacy. There is a state of the art gym on the community grounds along with a play ground and water slides for the kids. For your convenience, there is a mini mart at the entrance of the gated community. It's within walking distance of the villa. A Dominican woman name Yuby operates the store. She is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. She sales hot dishes as well as sandwiches and beverages. She is known for her Lasagna. If you are staying 5 days or more, I would recommend renting a car. I think it might be cheaper and a lot more convenient than calling a taxi. A taxi into Sosua takes about 5 minutes, and should not cost more the 300 pesos/8 us dollars. Caberete, is approximately 15 to 20 minutes away and should cost 600 to 700 pesos by taxi. You can live on the wild side and take a motor concho, if you like (a motor bike, moped taxi), but I wouldn't recommend it. Caberete has very beautiful beaches and excellent beachfront restaurants. The owners of the villa property (Catherine and Craig) went up and beyond the call of duty. They were friendly and very accommodating. They paid attention to detail, and made my stay there very pleasant. If I had a question, or if there was a problem, they got back to me in a timely manner, and were very professional. This couple really understands customer service. So when you see the caption above their vacation rental which reads " Mi casa es su Casa" (My home is your home) it is true. Smiles, Fun & Peacefulness!!!

Patience is a virtue. Day 1 - Andrea came to airport 3x's due to flight delay and was still outside on time with sign in hand. Immediately smiling, friendly, warm greeting and explained to us about the island and house rules in the midst of her extremely busy schedule. After arriving at home she dropped us to supermarket less than 5 minutes away where we stocked up, then she popped back up to give us a ride home. If needed to take a taxi or motor bike, they run frequently right by the house on the main. A typical ride to the town El Batey is around $200-$500 pesos, cheap. House has remote gate at entrance and another grill at front door with cameras so once inside you're safe & secure. Those were a major plus and gives you a peace of mind. House has a country hillside feel in a quiet area. The moist noise comes from her birds who wake btwn 5:30-6:00am but after day 2 you may sleep right through. Housekeeping and outdoor gardner were the best. They kept place clean with a smile and never disturbed you. Wi-Fi works once no major rain, utensils plentiful for cooking and entertaining. Andrea has some pricey decor in her home so once nothing is broken you should get back your deposit rapido. We enjoyed ourselves to the max and looking forward to next visit.
