Description from owner
Description
Inshriach is a spacious Edwardian house in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, perfect for family holidays, house parties, location work and special occasions. It's also one of the greenest historic holiday homes in Scotland, heated by biomass and with solar panels for the electricity.
Five miles from Aviemore, the house sits at the heart of a rolling estate of 200 acres, bordered by the River Spey (day fishing tickets are £25 on the 3 miles belonging to the estate) and the Cairngorm mountains.
Step inside and step back a century into the unpretentious, slightly faded glamour of an Edwardian country home with dark panelling, persian rugs and roll top baths. No need for retro reproduction here; at Inshriach it's the original, antique, fully functioning, real thing.
The layout of the rooms is uncannily similar to a Cluedo board. Was it Mr George in the dining room with the candlestick?.. Perhaps Mrs Black in the conservatory with the snooker cue...or even a speckled band slithering down the bell-pull...? This is a house with stories to tell and probably secrets to keep, a house that begs to be explored and enjoyed. The bedrooms - of which there are 10 – have gorgeous views. Suitcases are dumped on antique bedspreads and chaises longues. Someone presses the bell, half wondering whether a maid might actually appear to hang up the clothes, but although the bells do ring, there is no response – after all, this is a self catering holiday (unless you book the chef). The three original Edwardian bathrooms have been joined by a big modern shower room downstairs. Unsurprisingly, the house and estate are regularly used for films and photoshoots.
What sets Inshriach apart is the unselfconscious bohemian feel to the place and the reassuring mix of the luxurious and the down-to earth. From casual come and go meals at the large kitchen table, cosy by the Aga, to dressing for dinner and dining by candlelight beneath the gallery and cupola. You are also spoilt for choice with rooms in which to relax – Inshriach has two drawing rooms and a sun room and small library as well, so there is always somewhere to hide away for a quiet moment.
The owners of Inshriach, Lucy and Walter, are maybe a little eccentric. The overflow accommodation in the grounds is quirky to say the least: a yurt, hand built by Walter himself, sits on the hillside overlooking the river Spey; the Bothy Project, a modernist cabin designed as an artists' retreat is hidden away in the woods while the piece de resistance has to be the unique Beer Moth, a converted 1950s fire truck furnished with a brass Victorian bed, parquet floor and a wood burning stove. All of these are available to rent separately through Canopy and Stars.
Inshriach estate is brilliant for rambling about, exploring, picnicing, skinny dipping and lazing on the lawn sipping tea or cocktails and the Cairngorms National Park is renowned for its outdoor sports, from hiking in the Monadhliath Mountains to white water rafting down the Spey. There are dozens of golf courses withing easy reach, water sports are available nearby on Loch Insh and Loch Morlich, the Cairngorm ski area is only a 20 minute drive away and there are dozens of distilleries to choose from along the Speyside Whisky Trail.
Woodentom is running green woodworking courses out in the oak woods at Inshriach throughout the year.
