Heron's Cove On Salt Meadow

Chincoteague Island house

4 bedrooms / 5 bathrooms / sleeps 10

“Can't wait to go back” Let's be clear-- I am a finicky traveler. I own a nice home, and when I rent a house, I want to stay at a nice one. Heron's Cove is a very nicely maintained, well laid out house that suits multiple families vacationing together. We had 6 adults, and five kids 7 and under. I was worried that it wouldn't be enough space, but the house was absolutely perfect for that configuration. The house is set up well for kids-- The second story screened in porch is perfect for play, with a railing all around it and it's right off the kitchen, so you can see what they're up to. Tons of kids videos, beach toys in the shed, bikes to borrow... For adults, the kitchen is well appointed, you get your own bathroom off your bedroom so you're not fighting other adults for bathroom/shower time, and once the kids go to bed, there's a great porch that faces the water, complete with adirondack chairs. The beds are good too-- the owners had the foresight to put down toppers on the beds, and they're awesome. Location is terrific too-- right off of Chicken City, it's right between Main street and assateague, and an easy bike ride/job in either direction. Truly, the location couldn't be better. This is the first time I have ever stayed at a rental and had it meet my finicky standards. I will absolutely be renting this house again.

Chincoteague Island house

4 bedrooms / 5 bathrooms / sleeps 10

“Great, fun location for water lovers” Epiphany was the perfect place for a fun getaway. We were trying to find a place that had water access for fishing, etc. and this was the perfect fit. Plenty of room for everyone and the house was well-equipped. Beautiful views and not far from local attractions. Blair was a pleasure to deal with, highly recommend!

“Best place we've ever stayed in Chincoteague!!!” Let me start by saying... We love this place!!! By far, the best house we've stayed at in Chincoteague. My family loved it. We have 3 kids (aged 2-9) and they all had a blast even though this is a bit smaller than our regular home. The first floor is pretty wide open with a great eat in kitchen and island that everyone seems to gather around. Also, the enclosed outside patio is screened in and makes for a great outside dining area/ adult late night hang out (protected by the many mosquitos!):):):) Behind the house is some type of protected land filled with emu's, baby ponies, peacocks, donkeys and goats. We were here 1 year and the fence broke and goats were all over the porch when we pulled up!!! The rock driveway is considered a road even though there are 2 houses at the end of it. It is extremely long for a driveway. All in all, my family has grown to know this as a 2nd home and we have been going for a week every august for 7 years. Can't wait til this august at the Cedars!!!

Tranquil Shores - Relaxation With a Water View

Chincoteague Island house

3 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms / sleeps 6

“Great Place” This was a mother's day gift for my mother-in-law and her sisters. They absolutely loved it! They even plan on going back in the Fall. It did rain a bit durning their stay and the porch was perfect for a rainy day hangout. The owner was great at responding to my questions, almost iimmediately. I couldn't be more pleased.

Charlotte's Morning Sun

Chincoteague Island house

4 bedrooms / 4 bathrooms / sleeps 8

“Beautiful Waterfront Property” Charlotte's Morning Sun is absolutely beautiful. It was great for our group of 6, very spacious. We enjoyed the peaceful waterfront setting and all of the windows overlooking the bay. The house is comfortably furnished, and the kitchen is very nice. The house is supplied with bird identification books and a telescope and binoculars. The bird watching is fantastic. The living room has a large TV and a DVD player. The house also has wi-fi. We were able to crab at the waters' edge. It is a short drive to the beach, and the local restaurants and shops. Our stay was very comfortable and relaxing.

About Chincoteague Island

×

Located on the eastern shore of Virginia, Chincoteague Island is a low-key summer destination, easily accessible from anywhere on the East Coast of the United States. Many families begin their Chincoteague vacation with an ocean tour around the island during which you can often see dolphins and other marine life. Alternately, you can take a guided nature walk with the Chincoteague Natural History Association.

The beautiful shoreline is the island's greatest attraction, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and building sandcastles in the surf. A family friendly destination, there are hundreds of ways to entertain the kids on Chincoteague Island. In addition to the beach, you can spend an afternoon at a miniature golf course or head to the bowling alley. Another popular activity is renting bicycles and touring the island's country roads. As you ride, keep an eye out for the famous wild ponies of Chincoteague. A unique Chincoteague attraction, the wild ponies roam freely along the island's sandy beaches.

With the bountiful ocean surrounding Chincoteague, fishing is a major activity in the region. Surf fishing is allowed on numerous beaches, though visitors may also plan to go deep-sea fishing with a charter. Waterfowl hunting is also permitted and popular throughout the island during hunting season. Likewise, when it comes to cuisine, Chincoteague is heavy on the seafood, with a particular emphasis on Maryland's famous blue crab.

Here are a few additional suggestions of things to do in Chincoteague:

  • Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge: Spanning the state line between Maryland and Virginia, this wonderful wilderness preserve is a great place to spot birds, elk, white-tailed deer, rabbits, and, of course, ponies.
  • Chincoteague Pony Centre: After watching wild ponies roam along Chincoteague's beaches, you can take the kids to pet domesticated ponies and to learn more about the pony origins at the small accompanying museum.
  • Assateague Island National Seashore: Just across the water from Chincoteague Island, there are over 35 miles of pristine coastline.
  • Tom's Cove Park: Spend the day at this beautiful cove, which offers three fishing piers, calm beaches, and a beautiful coastal habitat for pony viewing.
  • Beebe Ranch: Come to this lovely ranch to visit the descendants of Misty, a wild pony made famous in a children's book.
  • Oyster and Maritime Museum: Learn about the history of seafood and the island of Chincoteague at this museum.

Enjoy the East Coast in the summer with a waterfront vacation rental in Chincoteague, Virginia. For a real taste of the shore, seek out a cottage or rental home along the coastline and beaches on Chincoteague Island, or look for a romantic Victorian mansion in one of the small island communities.
