“Great Stay, Great Unit, Great Owner, Great savings!!!” I know vacation rentals in NYC are controversial, and consensus on the web seems to be: Don't, it's too risky. I'm here to say it can be done, just do your homework first. This place was way above expectations. Four adults and a child were able to stay here at less than half of what it would cost for a couple low budget hotel rooms in mid-town. The owner could not have been more friendly or responsive, we emailed & texted each other repeatedly. She was full of advice about what to do, where to eat, how to get there, etc. She made the process of booking, and checking in and out very easy. She went above and beyond, like leaving food for our arrival, or sending out our laundry as the washer was broken. It was like staying with a friend. The unit was very nice, the kitchen and bath were newly remodeled. It was roomy enough that on our last night there, we cooked dinner & had a small party with 13 people in the living room at one point! The building and street were beautiful and historic, clean, fairly quiet, and safe. Great trees! One night my wife and I sat on stoop, had a glass of wine and the only other people we saw were hustling back and forth to the subway. It was a 1/2 block to the subway, and from there, quick cheap and easy to get anywhere in Manhattan. One caveat is that not everyone will be comfortable walking around in Harlem, especially at night, though you probably need to take it block by block. On some of the other streets, we encountered some people who were loud and profane, but we never felt threatened or unsafe. That being said, if you don't want to go out to a Harlem restaurant or club at night, you can safely walk to or from the subway even late in the evening. Or take a cab. Between the low rates, the close-by subway, and eating in, the savings just piled up. We were able to do the near impossible - Manhattan on a budget!

Quiet & Clean Retreat in the East Village

New York City apartment

1 bedroom / 1 bathroom / sleeps 2

“Would definitely stay here again.” My wife and I stayed here in late September for four nights and it was an excellent experience. It is right on St.Marks place so it is very much in the thick of the Downtown action. Despite the fact that there are throngs of young people on the street until late at night you cannot hear a peep at all when in the apartment. It is situated at the back of the building so sleeping was not a problem whatsoever. The apartment building is a typical East Village walk up. A little tired looking but the apartment itself was perfect for our needs--a well located, clean, comfortable, well-priced place to stay while in NYC. Everything was as Ila said it would be and there were no problems at all. She was so responsive and easy to work with - always available at the other end of my computer! We would certainly stay here again.

“Peace of Mind and Convenience in the "Big apple"!” We are from NY Harlem but have been living abroad in Dubai for the past 10 years. Our first positive impression of the owner and our host, Milton Wilson, was when he actually returned our call inquiring about the apartment -- he actually returned our call to Dubai! We booked and stayed at Mr. Wilson's townhouse for two weeks in august 2013. Our original plan was to stay 3 days at a hotel downtown and then move to Harlem. The hotel we booked downtown was horrendous so we called Mr. Wilson after the first night and asked if we could come earlier than our reservation of 3 days later. Mr. Wilson said "come on" and re-arranged his schedule during a torrent rainstorm to meet and get us settled in. He has several rentals in and around Harlem so he has the resources that allow him flexibility. More importantly, as most of Mr. Wilson's guests are coming from places which require long, ardurous flights. Being a man of the world himself, he is understanding and compassionate about the plights of long-distance travelers. We waited for Mr. Wilson about a half-hour; but, within the hour, he had us "tucked-in" a beautiful, warm, dry and secure second-floor apartment overlooking the perfectly groomed garden visible from the bedroom. Mr. Wilson is a walking encyclopedia of Harlem-its history and development-and stands ready and willing to disclose that knowledge just for the asking. Yea, he's very busy; an architect by trade, but also a natural businessman and conversationalist who loves to chat; and, above all, an ardent listener. He's not intrusive; but will always, no matter how busy, make time for his guests. The perfect location is convenient to everything. I intend to re-visit Milton's townhouse very soon and highly recommend the beautiful stay to all our international family and friends who want a comfortable, safe, unobtrusive, "home away from home" in the great -- but chaotic and ever-changing -- metropolitan of New York (even if you think you know it well)!

“We could not have asked for a warmer welcome, such a easy place for a large group.” We stayed here in the last few days of December and early January 2015. We were two families travelling together. On our arrival we were met by Emin who could not have been more helpful or welcoming. Having answered all our questions patiently we were able to easily found our way around exploring the New York area. The house was very comfortable, had plenty of space and was very well equipped. Most importantly it was very clean. What a relief as it had all been booked entirely online. You will not be sorry if you choose to stay here. Thanks Emin for a lovely stay.

“Lovely House and Lovely Host!” Our group had an incredible weekend away thanks to this lovely house and all it's comforts. Dennis was such a pleasure- he showed us around and then let us enjoy. When a snowstorm hit the region, he helped us by sending over his brother in law to plow, and when we accidentally left something behind he was very sweet about sending it back. I couldn't recommend this house more!

“If we visited New York again, we would definitely stay at Scott's place again!” This Apartment is located so amazingly conveniently to everything you need in New York City! First, Margaret waited for us as we were delayed learning the subway system. When we finally arrived, she was already there at the apartment. our first look around the apartment, and we knew we made the right decision. The subway stops are just a short walk away, all great restaurants are close by, coffee shops, theaters a subway stop away, everything! The apartment was wonderful! It has great character and was very clean! We enjoyed late night snacks every night with family around the dinner table. How wonderful is that! You couldn't get that in a hotel! The kitchen, although small, was very functional. even the bed was very comfortable. I have been telling everyone I know about Scott's little gem in New York City. we hope to return to New York for another fantastic vacation, and will definitely stay at Scott's apartment.

Central Park West Gem w VIEWS!!

New York City apartment

“Felt like home... In a good way.” I rented this apartment on marathon weekend due to its close proximity to the finish. It was clean and the views of the fall colors were lovely. It was extremely convenient to the subway, and the neighborhood offered everything we could possibly want. The apartment itself contains books and access to all amenities. I felt like I was staying at a friend's home. The price was very reasonable, and Suzanne was the perfect host. I left a laptop cord accidentally, and she went to the trouble to send it to me. I highly recommend this rental. Thanks Suzanne.

Amazingly Well-Lit LUXURY Loft

Brooklyn apartment

2 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 3

“Perfect Brooklyn loft, minutes from Manhattan” The host Boris was very welcoming and showed me around the apartment. The place is very clean, newly renovated and filled with light. The open space setting gives it a distinct loft look, with unobtrusive separation between the sleeping and living areas. Location wise, it is steps from the Brooklyn bridge. On nice days you can use the Citi bike share program to pedal your way to Manhattan over the bridge, which was a nice surprise. Otherwise the subway is nearby as well and the neighborhood is charming.

Brooklyn's Favorite Victorian Brownstone w/Garden

Brooklyn house

3 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms / sleeps 10

“Wonderful place and good location” This brownstone is a classic design - long and narrow footprint with a total of 4 floors plus basement. The unit is well kept up even though it has to be decades old. We visited over the Xmas holidays and the radiator/boiler system kept the unit warm on the coldest days. The stairs to each floor are a bit narrower than today's standards but when this unit was constructed, I'm sure that was normal. Lots of varnished wood gave the place a pretty homey feel. We had plenty of space for 5 adults to sleep, relax and hang out. This kitchen is smaller than today's huge rooms we see so keep that in mind. However, it appears the kitchen has been updated with nice appliances so you should be able to cook about anything. We did not use it but the backyard looks like it would be a nice spot to hang out in warmer weather. The closest subway stop is about 1/4 mile away and we used it multiple times per day. There is an excellent, large, modern grocery store about 1/3 a mil away. The unit even has a large roller-style wire basket that you can take when you go grocery shopping; make sure you take it or you will be sorry. The neighborhood looks safe enough; we felt quite at ease walking late at night. It was pretty quiet (compared to Manhattan at least). However, you do get the random trucks and sirens making noise at all hours. Still, it's NYC and should be expected. This place has a lot of charm. It's definitely "old school" but definitely not decrepit. This was a really fun place to stay and the area of town was pretty subdued. Still, we could get into Manhattan in pretty short order. A tenant on the 4th floor greeted us upon our arrival and we kept in contact during our stay. So, if there is an immediate need for assistance, you should have no worries. This is a big plus if you are from out of town.

Studio in Williamsburg, Close to Manhattan

Brooklyn studio

Studio / 1 bathroom / sleeps 3

“My stay at Studio in Williamsburg” Irina was welcoming and easy to deal with. The apartment was clean, and vermin free. The location was great- near amenities, quiet street. The apartment was spacious and warm. I would suggest an inexpensive update of kitchen area, it did not bother me but I could see where some would be put off by it. Over all the apartment was comfortable and I would suggest it to others.

Sweet Brooklyn Nook with Deck - 5 min to Manhattan

Brooklyn apartment

2 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 4

“Perfect place!” Our stay was wonderful! Location of the apartment could not be better. 5-8 minutes to Manhattan ( via subway nr L ), subway station just arround the corner. Neighborhood fantastic, minutes to Bedford av with many bars, pubs and restaurants. Very close to apartment 3 or 4 great bars, even with live music. Bagelsmith for breakfast 300 m from apartment. Unfortunetetly very smal bathroom - it was no problem for us, but if someone has claustrophobia... :) If You drink much alkohol, remember that floor in the kitchen goes down a little bit - so in the morning that is floor, no side effect of great party :) Exellent vegan restaurant just across the street - actually I do not like imitation of chicken or eggs, but food is tasty, they have plenty of carrot juice and lots of clients. If I need to use one word for that apartment - perfect.
