“TLC needed”

Reviewed 4 May 2019

Location wise this is excellent.close to shops and in the centre of the island.excellent heating system in house.it was very warm.however...on arrival it was clear the kitchen had not been cleaned and the floors hovered and my husband had to spend the start of our holiday cleaning.a single bin bag was provided for over a weeks holiday.with an extra £50 to pay as a cleaning fee this was unacceptable. The property has a drive to park your car however be warned.the garage is used by a gardener for business purposes.he was there for extended periods of time most nights and we had to frequently move our car or ask him to move his.there was a lot of trash by the side of the garage including a used gas bottle making the place look untidy. If taking a dog it is not a secure garden.there is no barrier in between neighbours garden. We only ended up using half the house as there was a strong smell of paint.this seemed to be coming from multiple paint cans stored in the cupboard.this is not something being pregnant I wanted to be breathing.however parts of the house desperately need some TLC. The bed in the master bedroom is extremely hard which isn't to our liking but other people may like it.

Response from the owner Thank you for taking the time to review our property. We truly value the opinions of our guests and we apologize that we did not meet your expectations. We want you to know that our holiday home means far more than a business, we truly enjoy sharing our passion for our island with visitors and want you to walk out the door feeling refreshed after a relaxing holiday on Islay. On contacting you to provide address details, immediately prior to your stay, we did advise that our caretaker, who looks after the property and makes sure guests can get access, would be on hand and that he uses the garage for his equipment. On speaking with him he advised that when he left the keys off so that you could gain access he parked in the drive as the street was busy. He introduced himself to you at that point and apologised for this and immediately removed his vehicle. He also requested that your vehicle be moved off the slabbed walkway onto the cement hard standing as it is being damaged by vehicles and becoming a trip hazard for the disabled guest who occupy the property from time to time. This was also requested in our email sent prior to arrival. We are disappointed at that you did not contact either myself or the caretaker regarding the issues as indicated in your reply to my email prior to your visit. This would have given us the opportunity to address these issues. We agree that the property still requires some upgrading and is an ongoing project. We really appreciate your very positive comments on our new heating system, which is included in the price of the rental. We apologise for the smell of paint, the hall was emulsion painted in March, 3 weeks prior to your visit and we had believed that the smell would have dissipated. We thank you for highlighting that the painter inadvertently put the tins of leftover paint in the hall cupboard, we were not aware that he had left us the paint. This has now been removed. Due to the difficulty getting the busy tradesmen on Islay, the bathroom and kitchen upgrade has had to be postponed until next year so this is also being addressed. Normally when a couple, such as yourselves, only use the master downstairs, ensuite double room and not the upstairs two rooms which do not have ensuite. With regards to the cleaning fee, unlike most owners we did not charge extra for the deep clean that was after your dog being in the property. We do hope this did not spoil your enjoyment of our beautiful island, and, should you with to return when our property is fully upgraded we would be happy to welcome you.

Response from the owner Hi Nina. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay and found our cottage comfortable. Please note that the welcome email does request that vehicles are not parkrfed on the slabbed walk way but on the cement hardstanding provided. This is to avoid the walkway becoming damaged and a trip hazard/ H&S issue. We are sorry if this caused any stress and will look at putting up a sign to avoid any misunderstanding in the future. Kind regards Fiona
