“An Inspiring Four Days in a Beautiful Jungle Paradise” We just returned from two and half weeks in Honduras in august 2010. We spent four invigorating days in the Cangrejal River Lodge (Villas Pico Bonito). We had only planned on staying three days but couldn't pry ourselves away! Richard and his wife anna built the place and their love for it comes through in every detail. We opted to stay in the Ceiba Tree Lodge and would heartily recommend it. It is a masterpiece. It's like living in a comfortable tree house surrounded by the sights and sounds of the jungle but with all the comforts of home. We fell in love with the place immediately! The Ceiba Tree and the other lodges are scattered around a compound that is a botanical garden of tropical trees and flowers. There is also a crystal clear infinity pool set above the river and the rainforest beyond. We spent ample time in the pool as well as in the warm Rio Cangrejal flowing by below. After relaxing by the pool on our first day we hiked to the El Bejuco Waterfall and soaked in the spray of the sixty meter falls. The entrance to the trail is over a suspension bridge a short walk from the lodge. The next day we went rafting on the Rio Cangrejal, a trip that Richard helped us organize. That was a thrilling and beautiful ride that also included some cliff jumping. On our last full day we rode the local bus to a small town called Las Mangas and set off on another hike to the village of La Muralla and some fabulous swimming holes. Richard and anna are friendly and helpful hosts. Richard arranged transport for us from the Roatan ferry to his place and back to La Ceiba for our bus connection. We never missed not having our own transportation. Richard will offer advice or will help arrange adventures in the area, or you may just wish to stay close to the pool and soak up the atmosphere of this beautiful place.

“Loved It, Didn't Want to Leave It!” Laguna Vista is removed from the main street and an easy 15 minute walk or quick bike ride to town. We added a couple taxi rides as needed which were cheap and easy. Absolutely no problems getting around! Tony and Jo are wonderful hosts who go above and beyond and filled in so many gaps for us. They live upstairs and are easily accessible, helpful and all around terrific people! I can't say how much we appreciated them and knowing there was someone on the island we could trust should we hit a snafoo! Also loved the extra's such as having a local cell phone, bikes to ride, flowers in conch shells. The grounds of Laguna Vista are immaculate; the pool total relief, soothing fountain sounds great at night and an amazing palapa to dine under! Only drawback- it's hot to cook in the kitchen. The bedrooms have awesome aC and we slept like rocks. The town- delightful; many memories and meals we remember fondly- don't miss El Picante, La Picola. We also enjoyed an awesome BBQ of our own fresh caught wahoo at Laguna Vista. Such a great time, Thank You!

“Relaxing” My wife and I stayed at Turtle Beach and found it to be more than we expected. The value was perfect for our budget. All the comforts of home were there.Paul and his staff kept the rooms and resort very clean. We were met at the airport and then taken for groceries before going to our rental.Turtle Beach is located half way between West End and West Bay,(about a 10 minute walk ethier way)just enough to keep you away from the hussle and bussle of the two areas.Yet if you wanted to go to ethier it was close. As far as the service went whatever our needs were were met.The entire staff made sure of that.

Chez Milady Apartments

Utila apartment

  • 1 bedroom
  • 1 bathroom
  • sleeps 5

“A Beautiful Oasis” Milady was an extremely accommodating host. I traveled to Utila with 3 other college students who were studying in Honduras for the semester, and they found her place online. She was extremely helpful when making the arrangements prior to the visit, and her support continued throughout our visit. She brought us to the apartment as soon as we got off the ferry, which was very clean, spacious, and nicely decorated. We discussed a possible itinerary for the week using her suggestions and were able to ask her a lot of questions. Because we were on a budget, she recommended the cheapest (and best) places to scuba dive, rent snorkel gear, go out for dinner, kayak, hike, etc. We experienced so much of the island with guides that we wouldn't have known about unless we had stayed with her. She also brought us to the store multiple times to purchase water and groceries for the week. Her thoughtful and generous spirit truly made our vacation the best it could've possibly been, and we all agreed that it was a wonderful decision to stay with her. Her prices are extremely reasonable and you will receive far beyond what you pay for. My friends plan on recommending Milady's place to all future students who are studying in Honduras and to anyone else who is considering traveling to Utila! Staying with Milady may end up being one of the best decisions you make while planning your trip!

About Honduras

The surroundings of Honduras feature a lush landscape that includes mountains, low plains, rainforests, and cloud forests. The Bay Islands and the cities of La Ceiba, San Pedro Sula, and Tegucigalpa are the main points of entry. Copan, a Mayan city, is a big draw for history buffs as it features an acropolis, a ball court, and a hieroglyphic stairway. These Honduras ruins have also been designated an UNESCO World Heritage site. Nature lovers should head to the Cusuco National Cloud Forest Park, home to quetzal birds while outdoor enthusiasts should take advantage of the variety of activities including hiking, swimming, Honduras diving, windsurfing, and tennis.

Here are a few additional suggestions of things to do in Honduras:

  • The Museum of Anthropology and History: This two-story museum features several intriguing displays that include information on the Spaniards' arrival, the Conquest, and the merging of Indigenous and Spanish cultures.
  • The Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve: The Rio Platano, the biggest and most impressive reserve in eastern Honduras, showcases thousands of diverse species of animals and plants.
  • The Nombre de Dios: Also known as "The Name of God," this mountain range expands east and south as visitors travel throughout the region. It features lush surroundings and a breathtaking landscape. One of the range's highlights is the Llama del Bosque, "The Flame of the Forest," a tall tree topped with exquisite red flowers.
  • Celaque National Park: Situated just outside the town of Gracias, this park contains excellent hiking trails and a cloud forest that includes the highest peak in Honduras. Celaque is a sacred center of spirituality for the Lenca people, who are indigenous to the region.
  • La Esperanza: Known also as "The Hope," this town is located in Intibuca, an area where many Lenca people reside. A drive from the town of Gracias to La Esperanza is well worth the trip. The road showcases some of the most breathtaking scenery in all of Honduras.
  • Gracias: This Honduran town is rich in culture and history. It is a must-see stop for all travelers interested in learning about the country. It features several historic sites including the village square, which is where Captain Juan de Chavez first arrived to the region in 1544.

A vacation rental is the best way to enjoy all of the comforts of home while you are in Honduras. Vacation rentals are a great way to make the most of your time in Honduras, whether you are on a Honduras honeymoon, a family vacation, or a spring break trip with your friends.

ROATAN: Cozy 1 bedroom BEACH COTTAGE FOR RENT
Beautiful beach home

This house is located on the beach in Sandy bay. It was perfect for the two of us. There is a nice fully equipped kitchen, a good size bedroom, dining area and a living room with a sleeper sofa. There was a laundry room underneath with a washer and dryer. The views were spectacular from inside and outside on the lovely wrap around porch. The owner sent us a lot of very helpful information and arranged for us to be picked up at the airport. Lenora, the caretaker, is the best, she helped us out with anything we needed. The Octopus Dive shop was a short walk down the beach. There are also some nice restaurants within walking distance and a cab to the west end takes about 5 minutes. Lenora arranged a trip to the mangroves for us. We would highly recommend it and stop for a drink at the hole-in-the-wall pub while you're there, it's only accessible by boat. We had a wonderful time at Lara's Dream and would definitely recommend it. We hope to go back again soon.see more
Artsy Large One Bedroom Centrally located
Best location! Fantastic, well designed and comfortable.

We loved this apartment from the minute we walked down the narrow pathway to the back garden and set foot inside. Although slightly difficult to access with all our suitcases, since its back a ways from the Main Street, this ended up being beneficial as it's quiet and private. The apartment features a modern, but comfortable and earthy design. The bathroom and kitchen rock and have luxurious modern features. The AC is only in the bedroom, but that didn't bother us. The beds and pillows were ultra comfy! AND the best beach (and gelato) is right next door. We were lucky to find this gem in the jungle!see more
Villa Del Playa #3
Quiet, peaceful beach condo

We had a great time at this condo. It has everything you need to have a great time at the beach. Plenty of space to spread out, it was six of us and we were very comfortable. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We loved our stay and had the best time. I would definitely recommend. … see more
Beyond Paradise
Beautiful beachfront home with sweeping ocean views

I loved this bright, open, and airy beachfront home and it's expansive views. The large shaded deck is a perfect escape from the mid-day sun and offers exquisite views of the ocean, the distant mainland, and both sunrise and sunset. The location is excellent. Easy walking distance to town yet far enough away from the bustle of main street. The unpaved road in front of the house goes to the airport and is a good place to walk or run (not much traffic). There is wonderful snorkeling right in front of the house and up and down the coastline from there. It is also a great location for several beach dives. However, in windy conditions it can be tricky to get out onto the fore reef. Personally, I would give it a 5 star review, but my husband was less enamored with the house so my rating is a compromise between the two of us. We stayed here after 2 weeks in a beachfront house in Roatan that had very comfortable furniture both inside and outside on the deck, including a table for outside dining. We spend most of our time on the deck so comfortable deck furniture is a definite plus. At Beyond Paradise there are 2 comfy hammocks and 2 plank seats, but no really comfortable chairs for hanging out. That said, I am sure it is difficult to keep deck furniture in good condition because of the wind and constant sea spray, but it would definitely improve the overall experience. The other concern was the shower. It is attractive and well designed, but the on-demand hot water system made it difficult to adjust the water temperature. It often seemed to be way too hot, but turning it down made it run cold. Taking very quick showers seemed to work best (and conserved water too). The kitchen is relatively well equipped, especially if you mostly eat breakfast and/or lunch there and go out for dinner. There are 2 nice sauce pans, a small stock pot, and a stainless skillet. There is a coffee maker and blender which we used every day. We would have appreciated an electric water boiler (for my husband, the tea drinker). All in all, I would definitely recommend this beautiful house to others, but there are a few small details that could be improved.see more
Casa Ladera Roatan West End - 6 brs, pool, 3 lvls
Perfect location

Casa Ladera is a perfect location for a quiet retreat but just a short walk to all of the resteraunts and shops of west end, no car needed. Diving was perfect including the shark dive which is highly recommended. The kids liked swimming in the pool and watching the stars at night after a long day on the water. The multi level layout of Casa Ladera allowed for the kids to have their own space and for the adults to have their own space for "adult time". Definitely coming back!see more
Quiet Serenity With A View
The Perfect Place to stay while enjoying the beautiful island of Roatan.

Shelly was wonderful, from picking us up at the Airport, to taking us shopping, to pointing out great places to eat and visit. She was always asking us what else she could do for us, from printing off tour info, to making sure we had enough water or propane. She was fantastic. The house, in our opinion was in the perfect place. Not Busy like the West End and centrally located, which made it convenient to get to both ends of the Island. The house itself was wonderful, comfortable, well appointed and the pool was fantastic. We felt so safe. The views were fantastic. We watched the cruise ships in the morning as well as the local fishermen. The local restaurants were great. Cal's Cantina was one of our favorites and our trip to La Serena Restaurant was well worth the drive. Thank you again Shelly for the wonderful month. We will surely be back and will recomend this rental to all our friends and family.see more
