“Paradise cabin” Decor was minimal. Advertised as Helen GA, actually closer to Cleveland GA. Jacuzzi tub jets were weak, waterfall in main bath was Inoperative. Good points, large Game room with pool table. Bedrooms all on seperate levels. Open floor plan for cooking and entertaining. Adequate parking. Was nice to hear the stream/creek running behind the cabin.

About Gainesville

Home to the sprawling University of Florida, Gainesville has a large and lively student population. It's well-known for its independent music scene, with plenty of culture, too. If you're outdoorsy, there are lakes and parks in the nearby Paynes Prairie State Reserve.

If any of that sounds like your kind of thing, book your Gainesville vacation rental with FlipKey, today.

About Gainesville

Sitting in the foothills of America's famous Blue Ridge Mountains and laying claim to the wonderful Lake Lanier, Gainesville is a popular tourist spot. Its lake, created in 1956 by damming the Chattahoochee River and filling up an Appalachian mountain valley, is named after confederate veteran and author Sidney Lanier and is a popular recreational spot for bathing and water sports.

Native Americans, known as Timucuans, originally hunted on the land on which Gainesville is built. Later Spanish conquerors were beaten off by English settlers and Seminole Indians; both vied for dominance. Then the railroad arrived, trading began and the city was named after Florida US Army leader General Edmund P Gaine.

Gainesville has plenty of natural greenery to boast about, being surrounded by woodland in the form of both coniferous and deciduous trees it's the perfect place to walk, run and cycle through.

What to do

Take a walk down Terrapin Cove Trail at the Don Carter State Park and see how many of these cute creatures you can spot. Once you're done, hire a paddleboat or kayak and get in the lake. You could even fish here.

Find out how 18th century Native Americans lived at the Cherokee Indian Chief White Path's authentic wood cabin. Built in 1780, it was given to white settlers after the Trail of Tears and rooms added; a great insight into 18th century domesticity.

Grab yourself fresh blueberries and blackberries at the 'pick your own' Cool Springs Farm. Great fun for the kids.

Head down to the Atlanta Botanical Garden with its colorfully mesmerizing gardens. The light shows around Christmas are simply stunning.

Go see a Gator's Game at 'The Swamp' (Ben Hill Griffin Stadium). It's where the Florida University soccer and basketball teams play.

Top Gainesville, Georgia travel tips

Heat in the summer is in the mid to upper 80s and it can become extremely humid, thanks to a subtropical climate. Spring and late fall are the best times to go temperature-wise. But it still can be changeable.

Drive to Gainesville via interstate 75 or get a flight into Gainesville Regional Airport. Greyhound also run buses via Jacksonville and Tallahassee while Redcoach buses pick up in Atlanta and Orlando International Airports.

Get around Gainesville itself on the regular RTS bus, a rental car or bike would help too, as its sprawling nature can make it difficult to get around on foot.

Live music, culture and the lake… it all adds up to an interesting vacation in a spot which has more going for it than your typical Florida sun getaway. Why not come and see for yourself by booking your Gainesville vacation rental with FlipKey? Check the site for great deals.
