Description from owner

Description

We're small. We don't have staff, hot tubs or saunas, gyms or pools. We're in a part of Wales often overlooked in favour of its more well-known and glamorous neighbours Pembrokeshire to the south and Snowdonia to the north. We're all about slow, simple, sustainable living. We're an escape from the constant pinging of arriving emails and social media updates demanding your attention. We're a place to be part of rural Wales not simply looking in on it from outside. We want our guests to discover and love wild Ceredigion in the same way we do, not as a visitor but as a local, so they will tell others and come back time and again.

The outbuildings and acres of Banceithin were unloved for many years. Out of the mess we've created a home, two environmentally friendly holiday cottages, a wildlife haven and thriving smallholding, just a 20 minute drive from the pretty Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron in Ceredigion.

Cwt Mochyn cottage was once an old cow barn and pig sty, built in the early 1800's. This spacious detached six person, three bedroom cottage is also environmentally friendly, the winner of a Green Tourism Gold Award.

The contemporary fitted kitchen is well equipped. Reclaimed and hand-made furniture not found in any catalogue or department store give the cottage a character all its own. A wood burning stove, vintage Welsh wool blankets and hot water bottles keep all the family extra toasty on winter nights.

There is no mobile coverage, but the cottage has wi-fi and a signal for most networks can be picked up a few minutes walk up the lane.

We accept up to two adults dogs (no puppies). Water bowls, sofa blankets and rub down towel are provided, and we can recommend local places for dog walks and dog friendly pubs. The cottage has an enclosed garden. We ask that you clean up after your dogs, do not leave them unattended in the cottage and, as we have animals on the smallholding, that your dogs are kept on the lead when away from the cottage on site.

The cottage has its own garden and patio where you breakfast on a sunny morning under the watchful gaze of a passing free range chicken, a lawn where you can challenge the family to a game of croquet, or maybe just sit out in the evening to enjoy a glass of wine watching the red kites soar above while you barbecue local mackerel for tea or maybe big fat sausages made by us from our own free range pork. But our home is your home, so you and the kids have the run of our smallholding, go pond dipping for bugs, be the “King of the Castle” in our stream-side treehouse, cook your dinner cowboy style on the campfire as the sun goes down.

Response from the owner Thanks for the review. Glad you enjoyed the food. Fair comment about the garden fence - originally it was only intended to keep small children in and not dogs! When it needs replacing we will put in something a little higher. Maybe see you again when we arrange the next heatwave!

“A Christmas break to remember for all the right reasons!”

Reviewed 27 Dec 2017

What a lovely setting for a Christmas break. We even had a smattering of snow on the last morning! Everything was wonderful - from the little touches such as the welcome blackboard plate with our family name on to the fridge stocked with our pre-ordered fresh produce all ready for us to prepare our evening meal on the first night. We stayed at Cwt Mochyn, and found the setting was remote enough for us to feel we'd got away from the hustle and bustle yet near enough to amenities to ensure we could go and get any essentials we'd not brought with us. The kids loved the games room, the stunning views and the nearness of the beaches. The adults enjoyed the charming nearby town of Aberaeron - and were delighted to find so many dog-friendly places! The food everywhere was fantastic, and the locals a real delight to talk to. West Wales is surprisingly cosmopolitan, but one assumes the nearby university is partly the reason for that. Lampeter is evidently doing very well. We had a great traditional Christmas with plenty of long country walks and family games. The television was there for the unmissable stuff, but we honestly enjoyed a break from the pings and alarms of daily connected life. If I could have made one change it would be to bring some binoculars so I could enjoy the bird life more. we saw plenty of red kites and buzzards on our walks, but the Cwt Mochyn garden itself was a hive of avian activity every morning too and it would have been great to observe more closely what was going on on the bird table. I'll remember to bring them next time! It was a great stay in a lovely house and we intend to revisit sometime!

Response from the owner We're so glad you enjoyed your Christmas return to West Wales. There was a set of binoculars in the cottage, but perhaps you didn't find the draw in the sideboard where they live. I shall make a note in the guest book so others know where to find them, and you too if you forget your own pair when you next visit! Happy New Year! Philippa & David
