Description

Peacefully and privately situated on 110 acres of croft land yet only 1.5 miles from the fishing village of Lochinver and 2 miles from the beautiful white sandy beaches at Achmelvich, Torbreck Croft is comfortable and well equipped, perfect for couples, families and small groups. The croft is situated off of the single track B869, part of the NC500 Drumbeg loop.

The house has 3 bedrooms upstairs, 1 king size, 1 large twin and 1 small twin. There is also a shower room. Downstairs there is a sitting room with open fire, a spacious dining kitchen with wood burning stove, shower room and large porch/sunroom with seating. The dining table can be extended to seat 6. 100% cotton bedding and new mattresses on all beds.

Bed linen, towels, logs, electric heating and wi-fi are included and there are a selection of games and books. There are also digital radios which you can connect to with bluetooth for music from your phone and a television.

Outside there is a shed perfect for storing outdoor gear and a picnic table and seating for making the most of the house's southerly facing aspect. There are additional deck chairs and a BBQ stored in the shed.

From the garden it is possible to walk freely across the croft land and for miles around including to the Manse Loch, one of hundreds of hill lochs in the area, where brown and sea trout can be caught. Even closer to hand, fish on little Loch an Ordain on the croft, 2 minutes walk from the house. We have built a jetty for your convenience. Fish for salmon on the nearby Inver and Kirkaig Rivers. Permits required, check out Assynt Angling website. At the end of the day, store your rod safely on our purpose built rod rack.

An ideal location for beach holidays, walking, fishing, cycling and relaxing. Stop off during your NC500 travels! Perfect for couples, small groups or families. There is a baby bath, travel cot and high chair for your infant.

Getting around

Climb spectacular mountains with walks or climbs of all grades - Stac Pollaidh, Suilven, Canisp and Quinag to name just a few. Visit prehistoric bone caves, a Pictish broch, ruins of 15th century Ardvreck Castle and many more historic sites. Take a boat trip to Handa Island for some bird watching, seabirds gather to breed here including puffins, or to the Summer Isles where Minke whale, porpoise, basking sharks and seals are not uncommon sightings, or from Kylesku to see the highest waterfall in Europe. Golden eagles may be spotted along the way. Try out sea kayaking. NorWest Sea Kayaking run day, 1/2 day, evening, multi-day and week trips in the area. No experience is necessary.

Interaction with guest

Torbreck Croft sits peacefully back off the single track B869 road down it's own good track. The B869 is on the Drumbeg loop of the NC500. There is lots to do! Visit the wonderful unspoilt white sandy beaches nearby. Achmelvich (2 miles), Clachtoll (4.5 miles) & Clashnessie (6.5 miles) are the closest but with some exploring you can find many more secluded gems. Travel a little further to Oldeshoremore and Sandwood Bay, both within an hours drive, or up to Balnakeil at Durness. Walk along the coast or across the hills and moors, the choice of routes is endless and wherever you go there are stunning views of Assynt and you may not see another person all day. From the cottage, you can walk for miles across the croft and beyond.

“Torbrek Lockdown Escape”

Reviewed 18 Oct 2020

This was our fifth visit to Torbrek Croft Cottage. We normally visit at Whitsun so this was a much later break than we have done before. The weather wasn’t quite as good as in late May but it wasn’t too bad either. There were more midges but we did manage to have lunch outside once. The cottage had been made Covid safe so there were fewer bits and pieces around, but that did not detract from what is our favourite holiday cottage in the U.K, comfortable, homely and very well equipped. There were new very comfortable beds this year, but everything else was as before, which is why we keep coming back. Hillary was welcoming as always and Flora the dog still pops over to say hello but is now an old lady so does not accompany us up the hill behind the house. Lochinver was also Covid safe, which meant a lot of places were either closed, serving outside or restricted numbers. The pie shop had moved outdoors and has bought the Caberfeidth pub, which was closed. The village was quite busy with NC500 travellers, many of whom had brought their camper vans to Scotland for a staycation rather than taking them to Europe. We spent time at the beautiful Achmelvich Beach, walking along the coast and having superb fish, chips and haggis from the campsite takeaway. The boys and I also attempted to climb Ben More Assynt, but were defeated by rain and very poor visibility. While things were unavoidably different this year, we count ourselves lucky to have been able to spend another week in our Scottish bolthole between lockdowns. It remains our favourite cottage and one of our favourite places in the U.K. We will definitely be back!

Response from the owner Hello David Thank you for your review, I'm glad that you enjoyed your holiday regardless of the issue with the shower. Apologies, our temporary fix clearly didn't work so I am pleased to say that the shower has now been replaced. We also plan to fit a full size freezer before next season.
