“Idyllic peaceful hideaway”

Reviewed 17 Jul 2022

This was a last minute booking after i had spent weeks trawling the web searching for the right place for a family break (2 adults, 2 children). Hobbit's Hideaway is a lovely little place to stay. The extensive gardens surrounding are beautifully kept and nice to explore. There is a swing, football goals and a swingball for children and lots of little quiet spots to sit and enjoy the surrounding flowers. The owners keep several friendly cats who are bound to come to say hello if you sit out long enough. The accommodation itself is surprisingly roomy and absolutely immaculately clean. Board games, books and dvds are available and there is every utensil/ piece of equipment you could ever need....kitchen roll, foil, dishwasher and washing machine (with tablets and sprays to clean), an array of dishes, glasses and cutlery, spare blankets, iron and ironing board, hairdryer, even a first aid kit in the bathroom! The wifi was intermittent and there wasnt a mobile signal but it wasnt a really big problem for us. There are a few steps inside so need to be aware of that if you have any mobility issues. The beds and chairs are all very comfortable. Mrs Feaster is a wonderfully welcoming and warm host. Offered us tea on arrival and there were drinks, fruit and chocolate to enjoy inside the house. The whole family are very friendly and will chat with you but are not intrusive. In Cropton itself, there is very little apart from the New Inn pub restaurant. In Pickering, a 10 min drive away, there are more restaurants, 2 co-ops, a lidl, several takeaways and an interesting selection of village shops (selling antiques, gifts, general hardware, ice creams etc). Beck Isle museum was closed when we visited so we went to the castle instead- £20 entry to see some ruins, not much information available unless you purchase a guide book so we had exhausted the site in half an hr. We all really enjoyed our stay in Hobbit's Hideaway. Very quiet and relaxing surroundings. Ideally situated for day trips - Helmsley (with its great outdoor pool) is 20 mins, York city about 45mins, Flamingo Land 20 mins, Whitby and the coast approx 35-50mins. Hope to return some time.
