“I left my heart in Grotto Bay”
Our stay at Grotta Bay was wonderful! Jeannie and Kris are great people and it is easy to tell that they love Long Island. We had luxurious privacy in our comfortable (and so affordable!) beachfront room that was graced with cooling evening breezes. During the day, with the help of Jeannie, we were able to interact with the community of Long Island getting fish from local fisherman, car rentals from their farmer neighbor down the road, and even fresh produce and guava jam at the Farmers' market the Jeannie helped to start! We had fun meeting lots of locals, everyone was friendly and welcoming. We also had fun exploring on our own. Jeannie told us about all of the Long Island secret spots that we often had to ourselves. She provided us with excellent driving directions and high quality snorkel gear, including shorty wet suits, so that we could enjoy all of the fun of the ocean in safety and comfort. And all the gear was included in the lodging fee!! We spent plenty of time right on the beautiful Grotto bay beach where we swam, looked out for amy the resident turtle, had a surprise dolphin spotting, and played with all of the water toys that were free for us as guests to use including kayaks and stand up paddle boards (super fun!). We also were able to relax and prepare meals in the outdoor kitchen, even eating coconuts plucked right from the tree. Other factors that made our stay especially good were being able to walk to two grocery stores, being centrally located on this long skinny island so that it was easy to go north or south for day trips, and having Jeannie arrange reservations for everything from car rentals, to restaurants, to tracking down good local papaya and fish for us! Overall we loved our stay at Grotto Bay and highly recommend it for couples or families.
“Can't wait to go back!”
We recently returned from a week at Grotto Bay and it exceeded our expectations in every way - great accommodations, ideal location for exploring, private beach and recreation right at your front door, and everything you need nearby. The accommodations are clean, comfortable, and well maintained. The full outdoor kitchen had everything we could need so it was perfect for self-catering. The nearby grocery stores are small but fully stocked. Prices were comparable to what you would find in a large metropolitan area in the U.S., (like Seattle or Boston). The beach out front is great for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying a drink under the palapa. The owners provide high quality water toys (stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, and snorkeling gear). We also explored the length of the island by car and found the location to be perfectly situated in the middle of the island so everything is a reasonable drive. This was our first trip to the Bahamas and my main goal was to find some self-guided/do-it-yourself bonefishing. We booked a day with a local fishing guide on our own before heading down to the Bahamas, but the owners can arrange one for you too. After this we fished on our own and found great flats within an easy five minute kayak paddle from Grotto Bay. There's another accessible flat a five minute drive away (the owners have our notes and maps) and we saw enough fish on these two nearby spots to keep us busy. There are many other accessible flats on the island too, but we ran out of time to fish them all. I can't say enough about how welcoming and helpful the owners of Grotto Bay are. They helped us make car arrangements in advance, and were always willing to answer questions or provide directions to beaches, restaurants, and attractions on the island. Any time we needed anything (cooler, fish for dinner, flashlights to explore the cave), they were extremely accommodating.
We stayed at Grotto Bay for a week in May. Salt Pond offers easy access to both ends of the island which you should absolutely explore. We went to numerous beaches and never had other people on them. Long Island doesn't have much to do other than beaches. There are a few restaurants and local markets, but other than that any kind of commerce is non existent. We flew in and out of Deadman's Cay and rented a car from Mr. T. Definitely recommend having a car. I wouldn't recommend Southern air, flights were late and planes iffy. As for our accommodations and hosts we couldn't have been happier. Jeannie and Kris gave us great suggestions and were more than happy to help with car reservations and general questions. The beach at the Grotto Bay is pretty and the water gorgeous. They have kayaks and paddleboards for use with islands close by to paddle to. We definitely recommend Grotto Bay and would go back with no hesitations.
“We got married here.”
Our title should indicate we are biased. We chose a private destination wedding with just us instead of an elaborate event at home with family. Jeannie helped us arrange things from the rental car ($400 for 9 days) to the flowers for the bride's hair. There is no public transportation. Due to overlapping our stay with the regatta, the ceremony was actually at Deals Beach on the Tropic of Cancer with a local minister. Yes, it was hazy with intermittent showers, but we were hurricane free and had the beach to ourselves. As great as GB is, we explored the whole island. Eighty miles long, no stop signs, no traffic lights, one deserted beach after another. How could we not explore? From GB, you can swim or kayak to uninhabited Sandy Cay, walk to the regatta, walk to two gocery stores, and run from bats in the cave, among other things. Because all the positive remarks in the previous reviews are accurate reflections, we won't repeat them here. Our downsides were a rental car that became a lemon (We were brought another car and Jeannie called the restaurant to pay for our drinks.), an inexperienced wedding planner (not Jeannie's fault as she wasn't the planner), the two rooms are actually rented as two separate studio units which means the other party can hear and see everything if you sleep with windows open, no doctor is available if you wake up with pneumonia on your wedding day, and the outdoor kitchen was just being completed when we left. All that negativity aside, Gb's positive is so much that, when we make it back to Long Island one day, we're hoping to stay at GB again. Fyi: We stopped by the resorts out of curiosity. The Cape at Santa Maria is a fabulous beach, but Gb's lodging appears better. Sella Maris's "love baches" are great fr walking but not swimming. Just make sure to leave time each day to play some horse shoes, take the kayaks out, and watch the sunset--all from Gb's private beach.
Response from the owner Thank you so much for this detailed review. We pride ourselves on service here, and are so happy you had such a beautiful wedding and honeymoon. Thank you so much for choosing Grotto Bay! All the best to you, with many happy years ahead.
“Go to Grotto Bay today!”
We loved everything about Grotto Bay and Long Island in general. Jean and Kris were fabulous hosts and helped us figure out the rental car, pick activities, and welcomed us with open arms. This place is perfect - right on your own private beach. The condo was just as described and we loved the kayak and enjoyed snorkeling right off the beach. The location is close to the airport and was an awesome adventure for us. I'd love to go back anytime - it's better than described!
“I found Paradise!”
Grotto Bay is a hidden gem! I stayed for a week and couldn't have been happier. Jean and Kris were excellent hosts - they know all the hotspots and provided us with recommendations that didn't disappoint. The room is perfect for 2 people and had a lot of storage so I could unpack and feel right at home. It's nice not having to live out of a suitcase! The room was stocked with snacks and drinks upon arrival (a nice surprise) and there are two grocery stores nearby. The private beach is breathtaking at sunset and is the perfect stargazing spot in the evening. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
“Perfection in Paradise!”
If you're considering a Out Island vacation, you're already thinking "Low Key" relaxation. Combine that with the perfect location and you're envisioning Grotto Bay. Jean & Kris have put a lot of thought (and sweat equity) into making Grotto Bay the perfect Paradise get-away...from the overall large picture to the tiniest detail. Thoughtful Hospitality ++; clean; wonderful amenities. Welcoming assistance and attentive friendliness (without being intrusive). What we enjoyed most was the ability to flip from watersports & activities into leisure moments within steps! Also, if you're into sailing sloops...there's none other place to be at Regatta Time(just don't book "our" room 'cause we'll be coming back!) Perfection! And all what is presented is for your enjoyment!
