Norma welcomes you to the Ard Holiday Cottage on the captivating island of Great Bernera which is situated in the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. The Ard has been designed with the comfort of guests in mind. It is both spacious and well equipped and is the perfect choice for couples or families wanting to 'get away from it all' and explore the wild and beautiful islands of the Outer Hebrides.
It offers a setting in which to relax and appreciate the tranquility of island atmosphere and is only 5 mins from the beautiful beach of Bosta, which sites a reconstructed, fully working Iron Age house and a Marcus Vergette art installation, The Time & Tide bell.
The house is located in a stunning setting and to make the most of this, the living room and kitchen have been positioned looking out to sea, patio doors lead out from the living room onto a large decked area which is furnished with a table and chairs so you can relax while making the most of the view.
Some extra touches have been added to ensure you are as comfortable as possible during your stay. An aga stove is in the living room making sure the house is nice and cosy. All beds are fitted with Kaymed spinal support mattresses aiming to reduce any pressure from build up leading to neck, back and joint pains during sleep. The house has been built with "Supawall" insulation and is very eco friendly.
The bathroom has a whirlpool bath with 21 jets (base, side, back and reflexology and 7 colours). The bath has a directional flow valve allowing you to isolate various jets to help relaxation and focus in on certain problematic areas of the body... just the thing at the end of a tiring day exploring the islands!
If you enjoy spending time outdoors, we have 4 bikes available so you can explore the island keeping fit at the same time. We also have fishing rods and can direct you to local lochs where you may be lucky enough to catch a fish or two.

“Weather good too!”
Thinking back over a month ago now makes us feel as we did then. Lots of peace and space. Beautiful local beach. Local shop within a nice stroll. Ancient ruins, Eagles, Seals. Wonderful views from cottage veranda. All mod cons. Freindly hostess! Get there now!
“Beautiful cottage, stunning views, lovely island”
This was our fist trip to the Hebrides, and the Ard was a perfect base from which to explore the Isle of Lewis. The cottage itself is immaculate - very clean, with excellent facilities, every comfort you could want, and a very picturesque sea view from the balcony, or even just sitting in the warmth inside. Norma, our Hostess, was very friendly and welcoming, having left us some sparkling wine and home baking on our arrival, then showing us all we needed to know about the equipment in the cottage when she arrived in the evening (she had been helping out at the Carnival in Stornoway when we arrived, and the cottage was left unlocked - an aspect of island life which I thoroughly appreciate) Great Bernera itself is a lovely little island attached to Lewis by bridge, with lots to see packed into a compact area - Bosta Beach is a must; Lewis has lots to offer with several archaeological sites, such as Callanish and the Blackhouses, and some incredible coastal scenery, especially around Uig. Lewis covers a large area, so there is a fair bit of driving to get around, but the roads are seldom busy and the views - wherever you are - are quite magnificent. Our sole "niggle", if you could call it that, was the ferocious midgie attack we endured the day after our arrival, but we understand from Norma that it was particularly bad that day, and, being august, was the height of "midgie season". All in all though, it was a great holiday experience, and the homeliness of "Isles Radio" kept us smiling warmly throughout.
“A lovely warm and comfortable cottage in a wonderful location”
Arrived on a beautiful evening but chilly. Our charming landlady had lit a fire and brought wine and homemade scones for us. She showed us how everything worked and made it very easy to ask any questions during our stay. The cottage was equipped perfectly with a shower I would have liked to take home. The flashing bath with jets was good fun. The kitchen had everything one needed. Very comfy mattress on bed. Lobsters were organised and cooked for us. Everything was immaculately clean. Plenty of reading material, maps and leaflets. The view changed in different lights and was a real pleasure to see every day from the cottage and sit and enjoy while having a drink on the balcony. Parking easy.
“A gem in Bernera”
We stayed at the ard for a week at the beginning of april. We had mixed weather but were always pleased to come back to the cottage. On arrival we were greeted with freshly baked scones and fresh flowers - a nice touch. Norma came round to make sure everything was OK and was on hand if needed but never intrusive. The cottage was always warm and had all the facilities we needed including a TV which wasn't small and had lots of channels! We would definitely recommend the ard and hope to return one day.
“The ard, a home from home.”
We came to the Isle of Lewis as it was an area of Scotland as yet unexplored. Knowing the unpredictability of the weather we wanted a comfortable and warm place to stay. In the ard we found what we wanted, an ideal place to stay for an autumnal holiday break. On arrival there were delicious homemade scones which were devoured with relish and a most beautiful bunch of flowers. Norma gave us warm welcome and on walking through the front door the warmth of the home embraced us and we settled in immediately. The most comfortable place I've stayed with wonderful views and everything within easy access. We had the use of bikes and fishing rods and when the weather permitted we made the most of them. Fishing near the Norse mill at the inlet seemed too easy as the mackeral were leaping out of the water! On cycling back from Bosta beach we followed a golden eagle, a truly magnificent sight which crowned our magical visit to Bosta. We had many more wonderful days exploring Bernera and Lewis/Harris, a week wasn't long enough. The ard had a lovely log burning stove which we were looking forward to lighting but as the house was so warm and comfortable the opportunity didn't arise. Needless to say we had a wonderful holiday but having seen only part of the island we will have to return and explore the rest, returning the to the ard as its the only place for us to stay.
“A lovely piece of paradise”
We had an amazing time at The ard. Our host, Norma, made sure that we were comfortable and happy and definitely made us feel very welcome with delicious scones and chocolates waiting for us on arrival! Everything about teh cottage is beautiful and it definitely felt like a little slice of luxury. The beds are the most comfortable we have ever slept in! Our children also enjoyed the holiday and loved the little touches like the spa, heated towel rails and lots of tv channels! Thank you Norma for a wonderful holiday - we will definitely recommend you to all our friends who may be travelling to your part of the world in the future. A wonderful place to stay!
Our stay here at The ard holiday cottage was excellent. Perfect for our honeymoon to chill, relax, take in all the scenery. A beautiful cottage in a stunning location. The whirlpool bath was cool, and the aga stove burning away added a special warmth to our stay. A great welcome from Norma. It was just perfect for our stay on Great Bernera. Bosta beach just over the hill was stunning as were the Golden Eagles overhead. We will certainly be back! Cheers Donna & Alan ;0)
We have just returned from a delightful weeks holiday at the ard. From the moment we arrived we received an exceptional welcome from Norma & Amy supplying us with a welcome tray of Wine, Biscuits & Freshly baked scones which was much appreciated. There attention to detail continues throughout the cottage with the lovely fresh flowers in the lounge its cleanliness second to none & all the features for a comfortable & relaxed holiday. The area is breathtaking with spectacular views from the cottage & surrounding area. We found the village convenient for every day purchases meeting the local people who were so friendly & accommodating. We would highly recommend the ard & we will certainly be returning in the near future, Thanks again to Norma & Amy for the most memorable & unforgettable stay. Vera & Stephen xx
We stayed in the cottage for one fantastic week in March 2013. From the moment we arrived we felt very welcome and a lot of thought has clearly been put into the cottage. Bernera is a fantastic location, we enjoyed exploring the island with it's beautiful beaches and walks. The cottage itself is well equipped and designed, has a wood burning stove and lovely views over the bay. The weather was great and the northern lights were even on display during our visit. Couldn't recommend this place highly enough!
“Delightful cottage set among beautiful surroundings.”
We stayed at the 'Ard' in May 2013. The cottage itself is very comfortable and is an ideal base for exploring the many places of interest on the West Coast of Lewis. The opportunities for walking and nature watching is numerous; indeed, one of the many highlights for us was watching the 'Gannets' swooping and diving into the sea off Bostadh beach, including seeing the other varieties of seabird in their natural habitat...wonderful! The seascapes along the coast of 'Bernera' and Lewis are just stunning.
