“An absolute dream”

Reviewed 19 Jun 2016

We had our wedding at Hacienda Sac Chich—it was an absolute dream. We stayed across the lawn at Casa Sisal while some close friends stayed in Casa de Maquinas, where we made mezcal cocktails, dipped in the pool around the clock, and dozed off on the star gazing platforms during the clear, hot nights. The house is beautifully restored from an 1860s henequen plantation with beautiful industrial details intact, of which the 85-foot chimney is mereley the largest. The bedrooms are airy with high ceilings, and each is beautifully arranged with mostly custom furniture—especially the master bedroom in the more newer side of the house, with its sunken settee and private plunge pool. Cyndy, Howie, and the staff were not just warm and attentive hosts but were easygoing in response to the sundry needs that came up surrounding the wedding. We had their staff prepare a delicious dinner (across the firefly-covered lawn at Casa Sisal) and a wedding-day brunch of fruit plates, chilaquiles, and mimosas under the loggia. We also had our reception in Casa de Maquinas’ dramatic courtyard; the kitchen proved a great place for our caterer to set up. The hacienda is near the small village of Acanceh, as well as a number cenotes and ruins—but we couldn’t bring ourselves to leave the grounds. Mérida, the nearest city, is about 40 minutes away and full of fantastic markets, restaurants, and bars (as well as beautiful places to stay for our other guests). We daydreamed about visiting Hacienda Sac Chich before we were engaged, then dreamed about it throughout our engagement—but from the moment we drove through its gates it exceeded those dreams. It’s a truly special place run by truly special people, and we can’t wait to visit again.

“Outstanding..”

Reviewed 11 Apr 2014

Contrasting with its pristine modernist neighbour Casa Sisal, the Hacienda is offset fabulously. The play of modern touches through the shabby chic Hacienda look creates a scene plucked straight from a film set. The cavernous rooms and vaulted ceilings interspersed with giant sized furniture causes a virtual loss of scale rarely found in homes these days. Quirky touches such as a sunken sitting area in the master suite underline further the sheer grandness of the space. The interlinking communal area or loggia as it is known again displays large arches and high ceilings to great effect. A very majestic and magical space in which to dine or socialise. Don't be mistaken though that this is some generic homogenised 'boutique hotel' as seems to be the big buzz word currently. Very much a unique 'home' that neither intimidates nor disappoints. Quality as expected minus the bland. The hosts/owners who can be found close to hand when required are truly gracious, honest and enthusiastic people. Qualities rarely found these days. Location wise ideal for the city of Merida and numerous sites all within day trip distance. Beautiful peaceful location around the Hacienda with lush tropical gardens and tropical birds a plenty. A certain 'type' of traveller may not like this space but that's who 5 star chain hotels were built for and is all the more reason we loved it.

“Amazing Oasis!”

Hacienda Sac Chich is one of the best places I have ever stayed! Located 40 minutes from the Merida airport it is easily accessible. Sac Chich offers a luxury experience in the heart of the Yucatan with easy access to the surrounding sites, such as the city of Merida, off the beaten path cenotes-where you will be the only one exploring the water caves, Mayan ruins, outdoor markets, and exploring the local scene. You can ride a bike to pick up freshly made corn tortillas and frozen fruit bars. The property houses spacious bedrooms with queen/king beds and individual bedrooms. There are small ponds full of lily pads and frogs, palm trees, and nothing but green surrounding you. You will have a pool all to yourself that is perfect for sipping freshly made margaritas and reading a book. There is a roof top to watch the sunsets, bocce ball, a field full of fireflies at night and a great sound system, in case you want to have a dance party. Everything is clean and well taken care of. The owners are more than happy to supply you with where to shop/dine, the best keep secrets of the area, maps with directions to everything and any other help you need. Staying here we had privacy, quiet, comfort, easy access to exploring and a place that felt like we had a home during our vacation. There is nothing negative I can say about my stay here. I would highly recommend Hacienda Sac Chich to anyone who is looking for a cultural Mexico experience.

“other-worldly beauty”

Reviewed 23 Mar 2014

Stunning. Each morning I woke to a cacophony of exotic singing birds summoning me to the outdoor beauty and warm sun that shines on Hacienda Sac Chich. The gardens are gorgeous, the architecture is unmatched in the area and I felt outside of reach of the world but had the option of connecting to the internet (which is great for listening to music on the house-wide stereo system). The location is close enough for day trips to anywhere on the peninsula and remote enough to feel like you are really escaping it all. The food is incredible - authentic and delicious. The food was better than any I've had at nearby luxury collection hotels. The evenings we spent watching the sun set from the star gazing platform on the roof with a glass of wine. Or having a great conversation in the open air living room. Or dancing by the pool next to the palm trees lit from below. True relaxation in an authentic and historic Hacienda. You will be moved if you visit too.

“Palatial Paradise”

Reviewed 7 Apr 2010

You enter into a tropical garden paradise. The atmosphere of Sac Chich makes you feel more as though you are in a castle than a transformed, historic factory. Architecturally it is very unique.Candle light fills the indoor and outdoor spaces at night creating a very romantic scene. Our bedrooms were very large and clean. The owners have elegant taste and have decorated the whole compound with lovely furnishings. We stayed quite cool within these high, stone walls despite the heat outside. The staff is very friendly and did the things for us that brought Sac Chich beyond just renting a house for vacation. Without the intrusion of a hotel staff we felt like we were hacienda owners! There is a large grass area where we played soccer and frisbee, we toured nearby Mayan ruins,we rode the bikes through Mayan villages, we trampolined, we swam in cenotes and the pool. There was more to do than our time allowed. And who wants to leave the lure of this place? The beautiful pool area is where we had the most fun playing water volleyball and then relaxing on lounges under the shade of the pergola, listening to the many varieties of song birds. The owners were very knowledgeable of the Merida area, directing us to historic ruins, cenotes, and local festivals. Pictures cannot capture how grand Sac Chich is. Our Sac Chich stay was a wonderful and unique vacation experience that this family of 4 totally enjoyed and we look forward to our return.

“Dreams in full color come true”

Reviewed 1 Apr 2010

Arriving late, much of what we were about to discover was still under wraps with the night. As we unloaded our traveling bags we could feel as though we were travelers of yesteryear. Majestic walls and windows and door that have opened and closed for hundreds of years were now at our touch. We entered with-eyes wide open. Vaulted ceilings, spacious rooms, candle light and low mood light greeted our overwhelmed faces. This place was more than we had asked for. We dropped everything in our rooms and just wandered the Palm gardens under the canopy of stars. Sleeping was easy for the trip was a days work and the beds were better than my own at home. Awaking to the smell of coffee and banana bread. Birds singing and flowers so fragrant I knew we had made the best choice. The staff was like family. They made every day worth while. We were why they came to work and they were why we were so able to rest and relax. The location is great . It's hub for all the Ruins to see or the Convents to visit but I just wanted to spend every day on the grounds with the fauna and flora and the pool and the hammocks. You must stay here.

“Sensational Sac Chich!”

Reviewed 31 Mar 2010

My husband and I had THE BEST time at Hacienda Sac Chic--at what has to be one of THE BEST kept secrets in the Yucatan! If you are into history, adventure, privacy AND luxury, this hacienda has it all. In terms of the Mayan culture and true Mexican experience, it's the real deal. Over the last six years, proprietors Cynthia and Howard Berger, have done an exceptional job restoring Sac Chich with the help of award-winning architect Salvador Reyes-Rios. We have been back three times since 2004 and seen it evolve into something truly magical. Its latest transformation includes beautiful reflective pools throughout the property, and a star gazing area complete with cushions on the roof that you reach by climbing up a gorgeous circular stairway. Every one of the rooms are well-appointed, and the bathroom in the original chimney (huge circular structure) is fabulous. Located 25 minutes outside Merida, the capital city of the Yucatan, Sac Chich offers a lot of things most "touristas" are not familiar with. Visiting an active henequen (sisal) plantation to see how rope is made, snorkling/diving in countless cenotes (deep fresh water pools), hiking amongst Mayan ruins, bird-watching, and strolling through the old colonial streets of Merida are tops on our list, though lounging around Sac Chich's lovely fresh water pool sipping margaritas is pretty hard to beat! And once the candles are lit at night, the 200+ year old hand-made adobe walls of Sac Chich take on a truly magical quality. It becomes one of the most romantic places we have ever been. Although Cynthia's staff provided light cooking and cleaning, we also enjoyed visiting the mercados (or even the local Costco) for fresh fruits and local food, and cooking some of our own meals. So if you or your family or friends are searching for an alternative to the beach, try a unique, interesting and rather exceptional experience, by visiting Hacienda Sac Chich. You will find forever memories.
