“Atmosphere fostered a sense of "just being".”
Our three week stay at Casa Maya Lodge was extraordinary to say the least. It began with our cheerful host, Mattias, greeting us at the Cancun airport at 8 pm and chauffeuring us to our comfortable hotel the " ibis" which he suggested because there was a super market and pharmacy at it's base with currency exchange and shopping within walking distance and it's reasonably priced. Upon arrival in El Cuyo it was obvious that this small fishing village 2 hours NW of Cancun was quaint, quiet and safe. The accommodations were very adequate, charming with its thatched roof and rustic interior and afforded a superb vista of the Gulf and beach 3 stories below. The north facing private veranda afforded adequate sun and shade allowing for personal sunning. Soaring pelicans and frigates abounded overhead with an occasional squad of Marines from the local Naval Base jogging by below at the surf line. The towns people and merchants were extremely friendly and understanding of our language barrier. The town square was an easy walk and included Mayan women selling their fresh fruits and vegetables, several excellent restaurants, the fishing boat harbor and several small grocery stores, even a pharmacy. Our host provided us with internet access and was easily accessible and accommodating. We feel this was the perfect get-away for a couple; it was peaceful and tranquil. Strolling the clean white sand beach, immersing into the calm warm Gulf water and greeting friendly towns people while strolling into town on the sand streets or to the harbor was the frosting. Transportation away is limited unless you rent an automobile in Cancun though if you're seeking peace and tranquility isn't necessary. Fishing and excursions can be arranged. The atmosphere at Casa Maya Lodge fostered a sense of "just being", no pretense or pressure to live up to others or caring; the view from the veranda was incredible and welcomes all who come to return. “Great location right on the beach!”
Right on the beach, easy walk to the center of El Cuyo, nice simple Palapa, peaceful, perfect location for kitesurfer!
“Real taste of Mayan Sites, flavors and faces!”
We thoroughly enjoyed the Lodge. Mattias was a pleasure to work with and provided excellent directions and help with of our needs. Located up a flight of stairs on the top of the building, a thatched roof Mayan structure with all the comforts. Simple, but not too rugged local style living. Efficient kitchen for light meals, good shower, basic bed with mosquito net, ocean breeze, and privacy. The lodge is located directly on the white sand beach and about 10 minute walk into town. Many times we were the only people on the beach. Walk to one end and watch the local fishermen come and go. The other end away from town you will be on your own. The highlight of our stay at the lodge were Christian & Magally. They are a delightful Mayan couple that caretake the property. He speaks English and is an excellent cook and she keeps the place clean with a constant smile. A delicious Mayan style breakfast served complete with flowers and traditional dress, on the rooftop overlooking the ocean. They are happily at your service and provide local information and can organize excursions. Christian offered his services as a chef and our first night we asked him to prepare our dinner. It was so wonderful that we dined on local fish and seafood purchased and prepared fresh by these two lovely people every evening at a cost equal to or less than cooking ourselves or dining out. We highly recommend bringing some nice wine and enjoying the beautiful surroundings while dining on the rooftop. You will miss the local experience if you do not take advantage of this service. Shopping is limited, basics are available, cold beer, tortillas, bakery, grocery, pharmacy with gifts. We were greeted with friendly smiles at all of the businesses. Remember siesta time here! We took advantage of Matias's VW Beetle rental which came with a local cell phone for communication. It was great to have a vehicle to visit the ruins and tour the area.
“Wonderful relaxing getaway”
El Cuyo is well off the beaten path as it takes a couple hours to reach the town from Cancun. The town is quaint and the community is very nice. The main attraction, however, is the beach. It is well maintained by the community and the water and sand are beautiful. The house is fantastic as well. We stayed in the rooftop cabana; a vaulted palm frond roof over our bed with a kitchenette, perfect for a couple going on a getaway. We had friends renting the downstairs apartments so we had nice evenings together outside. This beach isn't a party place, at least when we visited. We essentially had the entire beach to ourselves. Mattias is a great owner and very helpful. He maintains the property well. We would recommend having a car as it takes so long to travel between the towns.
